What is there to patch?
Youre talking about a Yamaha General Midi soundset.

The OPL3 was FM, 4-operator I believe.  It was the tone gen on the Sound Blaster 16 cards...I still remember those FM heavy metal solos from the game DOOM coming out of my 486.
If you want some FM, check out Blommers' FM for XMAS collection or maybe take a look at this:
http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/~clark/nordmodularbook/fmtonordmodular.htm

If you're talking about the g2 then I dunno.

Cheers,
Matt

Ahh ok now I remember them days.. The OPL3 was the chipset!!
XG wouldve been the General Midi spec/soundset..
Never knew they were on the old SB's though. I remember in some of those
old games of there being the option between OPL and Sound Blaster..

It has 8 waveforms that could be usd fo the modulation also, I think.
That would be the tricky part to emulate. Again, I believe using the
NM or G2 to emulate something else is a waste of processing power. But
getting inspired by it is a good idea!

Emulating an OPL3 will be hard. Making a logarithmic saw 4-op FM patch
should be possible. :)

I think they started calling it "General Midi" once they started using pcm samples, but GM I think general refers to the 128 standard sounds starting with piano and going through to the dumb helicopter and ocean sounds. XG has many more than that I think.
I first started sequencing when the OPL3 was in style...man...did it sound dry!
I was probably 12 years old then.  I remember getting an Ensoniq SoundScape daughter-board for my SB16 and that was all great-sounding (at least to my young ears) PCM GM.
When I got that ESS I remember thinking that FM was the worst thing ever.  It's funny how now at 27 I just bought a DX7 :)

Hahaha Im actually kinda bummed I couldnt really grasp it and sold my
TX-81Z years ago.. It had some gnarly Aphex Twin style 'drum' sounds in
it and some really heavy basses too but man I couldnt figure out FM for
the life of me back then and got rid of it.. Never did play with much
more than the patches that were on it when I bought it! Didnt buy
SoundDiver until sometime later, bet that wouldve made a world of
difference..

Aside from a crapload of extra sounds, the XG and Roland's GS superset
had more parameters to control for the sounds as well as added effects.
Think I put together my first Cakewalk based machine about that same
time those came out as well. Man I was so glad to get my first real
synth back then haha.

It's funny how our tastes in synths goes through waves (no pun intended)
At 18 I had a pretty big collection of analog monophonic synths, and was convinced that "old-school" was the only way to go.  I bought one of the first affordable analog-modelling synths called the RedSound Darkstar mostly because it had a lot of knobs...it turned out to be the most difficult synth the program.  I've wanted to sell it, but they dropped in value immediately.  Once I learned about the then-new Nord Modular, I bought one and sold all my analogs.  There have been times over the past decade that I've regretted selling my analogs, but after using a friend's old korg quite a bit recently...I'm not looking back.  The sound and tuning changes with the weather, and without a bunch of other gear, integrating it into a computer-based studio for heavily sequenced music was just silly.
Thank God for my nord modular! Rather, thank you Hans Nordelius, et al.

P.S. I spent some time with the Nord Wave recently...I'm not going to say it's no good, because "to each his own," but it's definitely not for me.

Here's something actually related to the group:
Does anyone know exactly what the spectral oscillator (g1) is?
I love the sound but would like to know a little bit more about how it works and what the actual waveform looks like.

Thanks,
Matt

Yeah, you're right. It's a waste. Just bought a Toshiba Satellite for
$2, it has a OPL3 in it.

thanks !
