What you do about the following during winter?
1. Mainsail: leave it on the IMF or take it off?
2. Custom cover or shrink wrap? If the former, what size and where did you
buy your cover?
3. Any other important "to do's" for those of us that haul our boat at the
marina rather than do it ourselves?

Hi Paul,
We leave the mainsail on the mast.

We lower the mast and put a frame and tarp over the whole shebang. We do
know people who leave the mast up and just cover the cockpit. If you use the
mast to support a tarp make sure that nothing rubs on the main or the jib.
We had a tarp do a bit of small damage to the sunbrella on the jib once.

I've attached a couple of photos of the frame for our winter cover (ignore
the loose jib furler, normally we would leave that bundled with the mast but
we were having work done on the sail). The idea for the frame came from
Robert Skinner, Here's a link to the very helpful pdf he posted to the list
last year.

me.pdf

This year, because we can do it easily with the new furler, we'll remove the
jib, bag it up and take it home.

If your boat is painted, I believe shrinkwarp should not be used as it can
blister a paint job.

Otherwise, it gets very damp here in the winter so we take everything that
would be damaged by damp (or animals) - cushions, books, the UPS, etc - off
the boat. I also bring all of the galleyware home for a thorough cleaning.
We bring loose electronics home for the winter as well. We then leave the
boat open under the tarp so air can circulate.

We drain our water tank and pump the lines dry. We make sure there is no
water to freeze in the porta potty.

I think that's about it. Fred may have a few more things to add to the list
when he sees this.

Paul, We have our boat in Torch Lake in upper, lower Michigan. We remove the
sails every fall and do not worry about a rodent finding a new winter home in
our sails. Removing the sails allows inspection of the sails, IMF foil, upper
and lower foil bearings or bushings. We take our sails to a loft every other
year for professional inspection. If you are in a freeze climate, water
in your
boat can do extensive damage. Holding tanks are obvious but don't forget
lazarette, voids under floor over CB trunk, head area and "V" berth. Any area
that might fill with water should be able to drain or put in a filler  object
(coated foam fender) that will absorb any ice expansion. A total clean out of
all galley supplies, PFD's, cushions, extra clothing, tools, etc. will help
prevent mold, mildew & rust. The shrink wrap controversy, air tight vs
ventilation, is your call. The cost and inability to get into my boat keeps me
from shrink wrap. A custom cover is nice but not any better than carefully
secured tarp(s). Be sure any loose stays, fittings, chains, etc. can not blow
in the wind and chip away at your boat's finish. The metal eyes on tarps must
not be able to rattle or rub on the boat. We remove the spreaders and provide
extra support for the mast stored on the bow and stern rails. Remove all
batteries and any electronics that are easy to remove. Consider anchor roads
and dock lines as possible source of mildew.  Remove any gas, oil, lubricants,
sun tan lotions, insect sprays etc. A bare boat is best. If you leave anything
on board make it a coat of wax Jim
