I am currently using apcupsd 3.14.4 together with an APC BackUPS RS1500
(usb) and occasionally apcupsd dies after a restart quoting:

apcupsd error shutdown completed."
apcupsd FATAL ERROR in ../drivers/usb/generic/generic-usb.c at line 636
Cannot find UPS device --
For a link to detailed USB trouble shooting information,
please see <http://www.apcupsd.com/support.html>.
."

Sometimes this seems to be related to the apcupsd's usb driver getting
replaced with the standard battery driver. When I try to manually select
apcupsd's driver it is not there and can not be loaded from
apcupsd\driver directory. The driver can also not be rolled back, as no
backup was made when replacing he driver. I have switched the UPS to
another server and tested again, witht the same result. The USB driver
is gone after the system has been srestarted and is replaced by the
standard HID-Battery driver.

I have tried this with 3.14.4 and .3 - I originally updated from (I
believe) .1 because of the same problem.

This is the first report we've had of this specific problem -- the driver
disappearing and being replaced by the standard battery driver after a
reboot. When you say the driver "can not be loaded from apcupsd\driver
directory", what exactly happens when you try? What version and service
pack of Windows are you running? Are you on an x64 platform? Are you
running any sort of virus protection or server protection suite that could
be mis-detecting the apcupsd driver as a threat (since it is not signed)?
Since this behavior has not been reported on other systems, I suspect
there's something about your specific environment that is leading to the
problem.

The two systems that I have tested on were a Win2003 Enterprise and Win2003 SBS R2 Server with up-to-date service packs (sp2) and patches - both 32-bit. The OS setup is pretty standard - especially the SBS system is pretty much out-of-the-box. Both are running Symantec Antivirus (Corp.) 9.00.338, which did not complain about anything related to apcupsd or the driver.

When I try to load the driver (via "have disk") from apcupsd\driver directory it tells me that there is not suitable driver for the device or that it may be a 64-bit driver.

I have now downgraded to 3.14.0 on the USB-connected server, which seems to work fine. Some network apcupsd clients are still on 3.14.4 which seems to work fine, too - als long as no usb driver is needed.

If there is any information that I can collect to help you diagnose what is going on, please let me know.

I suspect you may have a low-level USB issue on your machines. I've tested
on Win2k3 quite a lot recently, and never encountered this problem.
Assuming you are following the directions in "install.txt" when manually
installing the driver (specifically that you're changing the driver on the
"American Power Conversion USB UPS" and NOT the "Batteries -> HID UPS
Battery") the only thing I know of that would randomly cause Windows to not
find a suitable driver would be a mismatch in VID/PID. This would be caused
by bad USB data from the device, which could be from bad cables, flakey USB
HUBs, bad USB host drivers, etc. I would suggest looking for some sort of
problem like that. The USB driver has not changed from 3.14.x to present,
so randomly switching between versions is not actually accomplishing
anything other than reinstalling the driver.

Hi Adam,

thanks for your help in troubleshooting my problem. You are right, I did try to update the driver for the wrong device in the device manager. After testing some more, I still find that the USB driver will be gone after reboot it it has been installed during setup. If I now go and manually install the driver from the apcupsd\driver directory, the driver seems to stick with the device.

Another thing: I am using a BackUPS RS1500 via USB, and I think that I used to be able to get some basic eeprom information (such as the grace period) using older versions of apcupsd (with apcaccess I think). But with apctest in current versions, I don't get any eeprom menu entry listed. Is that correct or am I confused with some other UPS? I did not look at this for a while....

Kind regards
Philipp
