wiki pagesI have made a number of changes[1] to
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianScience - hopefully they are an improvement (and if anyone objects to the changes I have made, please let me know). Before I go much further, how do people see the role of the wiki - and in particular the individual subject pages. At the moment many of them are out of date and incomplete. How do people see the role of the wiki pages? Are they a list of packages people want packaged, and some indication of progress on the packaging? Are they to give information to researchers in particular subject areas on what packages are available? Are they a list of e-mails on what packages people used 3 years ago (this is the case for some of them)? Should they be replaced by http://cdd.alioth.debian.org/science/tasks/index.html Personally, I think that related projects - debian-med etc should be linked more prominently - but how far does that extend - I don't think we want to link to teams maintaining one package for example? What I think would be nice are case studies (or links to case studies) of how to accomplish a particular task. The "how to produce a poster" section of http://wiki.debian.org/DebianScience/ConferenceTools is rather sparse for example. Another example that would be useful to me personally is "How to perform finite element modelling using software in Debian". Comparitive reviews of particular pieces of software would also be useful. Chris [1] I've added DebianScience/Engineering etc to match up with the metapackages, moved the metapackages area nearer the top and turned it into a table with links to the sentinel pages and ITP/RFP. I'd like to add a link to bugs in particular subject areas - see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=489861 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-science-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". The wiki pages that list existing and prospective packages do not make any sense to me and I think they should be replaced by the tasks pages. Kind regards and thanks to your effort in the Wiki Andreas. -- http://fam-tille.de -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-science-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Hi Chris, Now that we have nice autogenerated pages on Alioth, I think that the wiki could be used as an input point from the users: we can subscribe to pages that link to the Alioth task pages, and tell the users that they can make suggestions on our mailing lists or on the wiki itself. The wiki can have an additional role: to draft pages for the WML website. For instance, the "Biology" task page accumulated more and more DNA multiple sequence alignment tools. At some point, I started to write a more dedicated wiki page (http://wiki.debian.org/SequenceAlignment). Now that I do not expect the list of packaged programs in this field to change too often, I will use the wiki page as a base for a new page in the Debian Med section of the Debian website. To summarise my view: Wiki task pages -> Alioth task pages -> Wiki thematic pages -> Debian website Have a nice day, -- Charles -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-science-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". I have reduced the length and content of most of them. They should ultimately completely vanish and being replaced by up-to-date tasks pages. Do you plan to turn your SequenceAlignment page into a task page (it might already be the case, I have not checked)? Nice pages that could be produced by tasks would be similar (in the content) to such pages: http://www.opennovation.org/ (great work, Adam!). Well, the tasks pages are only one (well, my favorite and most important one) part. Have a look at the features of http://debian-med.alioth.debian.org/ (left column "pages"). I'm not completely happy about everything but this should give you an idea what might be possible in addition to the tasks pages. This stuff is subject of my DebConf work (or next Extremadure meeting /Debian Edu gathering, whatever). I'd like to make this available for all CDDs and enhance it once I'm touching int regarding some aspects. So the homepage of a CDD should be more than just the tasks pages - even if I would like to make the link to the tasks more prominent. I'll ask for the help of web designers later ...
