Hello...yes it's been insanely busy!!

The past three weeks I've worked nearly every day and on some days a good 12 to 14 hours.  There's been two projects that we've been trying to complete and I'm sorry that I havne't had time to be sharp and get on top of emails in this way.  So thanks for your patience Math.  I had gotten your original email and read it, but thought to respond when I'd gotten some time.  Suffice it to say that I let it end up sinking to the bottom of my inbox and then it was out of sight for me (and out of thought).

To pick up with your questions...

You had mentioned the concept regarding possibly transitioning to Sourceforge.  It's both interesting and compelling.  Personally...as long as there's great exposure for the project I'm not "tied" to any open source repository per say (and not biased towards hosting it as Sun). 

To speak to your clear comments on the cumbersome nature of using CVS and the huge number of projects to wade through on the Sun server.  I agree.  It's totally prohibitive when setting up a CVS repository location and then loading in the project.  This I've obviously not been a fan of.  I know that Sourceforge a while back migrated to SVN which personally I like quite a bit.  I also understand the motive behind your comments regarding tagging before commiting your changes. 

So now what to do in response to the thoughts you've thrown out...

I guess first off...in the absence of the of rolling the project into Sourceforge yet...(that possiblity being a future direction to hash out more on)...would you like me to tag the codebase for the current 2.1 M3 code set?  Now I haven't created a tag in CVS for the project yet (I've obviously done so plenty of times in other settings...just not using the CVS instance that Sun hosts).  Can you provide me the tag name to match your suggested naming conventions moving forward?  I can then create the tag, email you to let you know it's complete and at that point you can proceed whenever you have opportunity.

To elaborate a bit more on some of the related questions/comment you originally made:

...additional comments on that first email.  I know you'd asked for me to provide the tag name for application to the head.  Currently trunk is at a 2.1 M3 state (as I just mentioned in my last email).  based on this info...do you have enough to infer a proper tag name for it?  If not please respond back and I'll try to get back to you with additional information.

Let's start a serious discussion on what would be entailed to move the project to Sourceforge.  I may need to talk to one of the contacts at Sun to see if there are any complications related to moving it.  (I would hope not...but we'll see).  Is there anything else that you have knowledge on as far as what this would take?  I would gladly take time to research this further...but with being swamped I'm trying to hammer out the last stages of work on these projects I'm trying to wrap up.

Yes, it's just fine, I used the full version name for the tag (abeille_2-1-0M3) which I'm trying to apply at the moment... the cvs server at dev.java.net is a pain in the neck...

Glad you like the idea! Moving the project to sf.net should be easy and straightforward. It requires to file a project request and wait for them to process our request. Since it is an existing project there shouldn't be any trouble. To resume, the roadmap would look like:
1) File project request
2) Configure the project (downloads, forums, mailing lists, etc)
3) Check-in the source code and apply relevant tags
4) Let everyone know that the project moved and that current mailing lists will be terminated in favor of new ones
5) Setup the web page

Step 5 can wait because it is a rather lengthy task, but the rest should be done in a few hours. If you're ok with that, I could begin the process and keep you posted on developments.

It's confirmed now, the tag abeille_2-1-0M3 has been applied successfully. I intend to open a branch to commit the changes I made so far to abeille and I could open one for you too if you want. All we need now is to decide what naming convention we would like to use for branches... I propose to use developers' names like you suggested for the moment. The naming scheme can be changed at a later time if we feel it does not work well anymore. What do you think?

To get you up to speed on a couple of items I've followed up on (since our least correspondance):


1)  The CVS vs SVN issues.  I did a bit of research and java.net it turns out DOES have support for SVN.  I have contacted Sun and their leads at java.net and am waiting to hear back from them.  I have for feedback as to the process we would need to follow to get our codebase migrated to SVN.  I explained our concerns with performance of CVS, etc.

2)  I enquired about possibly moving away from java.net as the hosting point for the Abeille project.  I told them it wasn't in stone yet...and that we are in discussions.  However, if there is a change we make I don't want Abeille left unmanaged on java.net.

3)  I'm also looking into ways to increase exposure if we stay on java.net.

4)  Finally...I re-initiated with George to obtain a stable release of the much larger 3.0 changes that he and his team have done.  I want to review that work and then plan out a code review and merge at some point.  This is at least a first step.

I read the email you sent to George. I hope he's still interested in sharing the code. It is important however to make sure that the code is free of any copyright issues; in other words, that the code belongs to him and that he agrees that we modify and redistribute it without restrictions.
