very basic conceptual question about links

I'm brand new to farcry and have installed 4.0.9.

I have created and navigation nodes, html pages with left nav bar and
main.  Great stuff, easy.
I created a links node and html page.
I created links under the links node, thinking that they would
automagically show up on the page somewhere.  Alas, no links.

Could someone please give me a brief overview of what links are
supposed to do when added to the site tree?  Obvioisly I am missing
some basic concept and I can't locate a document to explain it.

Thanks, Bill

Let's say in your nav structure you wanted to link to another site.
In this is where you would use a link.  Or, if you wanted to put
together a portfolio of clients and each one linked to that client's
website.  The links will not (by default) show up on the page
anywhere.
