> Hi All,
>
> I am Karthik. I work with Ahi. We are using Axion extensively for our
> ETL (Extract - Transform - Load) as well as EDM (Enterprise Data Mashup)
> Data Integrator tools and we have made good amount of code changes to the
> axion code base by introducing several new external tables like XML Table,
> Spreadsheet table, Web(HTML) table, etc. We are also working on performance
> improvement for various axion tables.
>
> We feel Axion has the ability to grow as one of the best java based
> embedded databases and deserves more attention. If Axion could be made a
> Java.net project, Axion would be able to attract a fair number of developers
> from Java.net developer community. I would like to propose this idea to the
> Axion community for discussion.
>
I downloaded the source and set up the classpaths using Eclipse. I also have my
JDK set to 5.0. It was complaining that VarBinaryType had a duplicate method
"equals". This is because VarBinaryType extends BaseDataType, which implements
DataType. DataType extends Comparator and Serializable, so there is no need to
implement these 2 interfaces again in this class. I removed those 2 interfaces
from the implements set and it compiles fine. Also compiles under 1.4.

I have an observer status, so I don't think I can commit anything.

Just thought I should mention it.

convert to a formatted string. I'm kicking myself

because I've done this before with axion.
What is the SELECT code for formatting a date into a string with Axion ie the
equivalent to to_char(mydate, 'dd/mm/yyyy')

I am +1, I voted before, but seems like mail did not go thru.

BTW, IS there any other developer reading mail in this thread?

I have been lately playing with Axion code base to improve performance
based on http://www.polepos.org/ <http://www.polepos.org/> test result.
I did have some success, but seems like delete is still slow for both
array as well as btree index.

I will tag and check-in my changes soon. If you anyone interested to see
before I checkin I can send a patch. After this checking the inserts and
specifically the prepare statements will be real fast.

Axion had lots of unnecessary toUpperCase all over for object names, removed where possible.
Improved performance for constraint check specifically for primary key.
Improved performance for Prepare statements specifically for addBatch() and executeBatch() sequence.
Improved performance by in-lining and/or declaring some accessor functions as final in critical sections.
Improved performance by replacing Iterator based loop to index based loop for Lists.
Improved performance by cashing hashcode and use == for equal methods in ColumnIdentifier and few other places.
Improved performance by cashing RowDecorator where possible
Improved performance by using Index for IntRowMap instead of sorting the rows for Index column in getIndexedRows(), this improved performance significantly while doing lots of insert/update in batch mode. While checking constraints the getIndexedRows() was called very frequently and sorting the all the rows in transaction was very expensive.
Improved performance by using IntHashMap/IntSet where possible.
Automatically create index for FKs, Axion does create index PKs already.
Optimized query planner for traditional join.

In order to simplify the explanation, I'd like to propose we change our
license from "BSD-like" to the actually BSD license.

Specifically, I'd like to propose the following:

====
Copyright (c) 2002-2006, Axion Development Team
All rights reserved.

Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without

* Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer.

* Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the
documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution.

contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from
this software without specific prior written permission.

THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED BY THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND CONTRIBUTORS "AS
IS" AND ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED
TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE DISCLAIMED. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE COPYRIGHT OWNER
OR CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL,
EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO,
PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES; LOSS OF USE, DATA, OR
PROFITS; OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION) HOWEVER CAUSED AND ON ANY THEORY OF
LIABILITY, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, STRICT LIABILITY, OR TORT (INCLUDING
NEGLIGENCE OR OTHERWISE) ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THE USE OF THIS
SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE.
====

which is precisely the template at
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.php where:

<OWNER> = <ORGANIZATION> = Axion Development Team

And

<YEAR> = 2002-2006

If you compare this to our current license
(http://axion.tigris.org/nonav/source/browse/*checkout*/axion/LICENSE.tx
t?rev=HEAD) you'll note the following changes:

* We no longer reference "Tigris", which we probably never really had
much right to anyway

* Bullets 3 and 4 are collapsed into a single item

* The bit at the bottom defining "Axion Development Team" and stating
"License changes are to be determined by a simple majority vote of the
Axion Development Team." has been dropped, as it seems to make some
lawyers nervous.

If there are no comments, complaints or suggestions, I'll open a formal
VOTE thread later this week.
>
> I fixed few more FK issues and checked in to head. Will fix the rest
> soon except #13
>
> See attached text file, I have put togather all the issues reported so
> far...
> > Subject: RE: More Issues Reloaded ;-)...
> >
> > > Good job Dirk, I will fix them over the weekend :)
> >
> > that's great.
> >
> > So I have checked the PK/FK-constraint business a little further in

a

> more or less
> > systematic way and found some new issues and some suggestions for
> further
> > support. My favourites are #1, #2, #5 & #4.
> >
> > Dirk
> >
> > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
> >
> > 1. Bug: Dropping child table doesn't drop related FK-constraints
> > ----
> > create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y));
> > create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)

references
> x);
> > drop table y;
> > create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)

references

> x);
> >
> > ==> java.sql.SQLException: A constraint named Y_FK already exists.
> > ----
> >
> > Notes:
> > - The sample code seems to run fine if you don't name the FK (Y_FK)
> but I guess
> > that's just because Axion then gives a random name.
> > - I thought it to be a general behaviour and checked it with primary
> keys, too. But
> > primay keys are fine.
> > - I didn't check it with CHECK-constraints though.
> >
> >
> >
> > 2. Bug: Dropping of parent table leads to orphan FK-constraints
> > ----
> > create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y));
> > create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)

references

> x);
> > drop table x;
> > insert into y values (1);
> > ==> java.sql.SQLException: FOREIGN KEY constraint Y_FK violated.
> > ----
> > Notes:
> > - The drop table command should not be accepted.
> > - The SQL-syntax that implicitly drops all referring FKs could be
> supported:
> >       drop table x cascade constraints;
> > - The internal data structure of the FK is surely mixed up.
> >
> >
> >
> > 3. Bug/feature: Dropping of PK while FK exists
> >
> > The following behaviour can be considered corrected if one assumes
> Axion doesn't
> > require a PK for checking FK-constraints. If one has a more

restricted
> view of the
> > matter the behaviour isn't correct.
> > ----
> > create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y));
> > create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)

references

> x);
> > alter table x drop constraint x_pk;
> > insert into y values(1);
> > ==> java.sql.SQLException: FOREIGN KEY constraint Y_FK violated.
> > ----
> > Notes:
> > - Oracle requires special syntax and implicitly drops related
> FK-constraints:
> >       alter table x drop constraint x_pk CASCADE;
> >
> >
> >
> > 4. Syntax improvement: CREATE TABLE: PK/FK-definition in column
> definition
> >
> > a) and b) are currently supported, c) isn't (ParseException):
> >
> > a) create table x(y number(5) primary key);
> > b) create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)
> references x);
> > c) create table y(y number(5) references x);
> >
> >
> >
> > 5. Feature improvement: FK-business rules: Support for ON DELETE
> CASCADE /
> > ON DELETE SET NULL
> >
> > Currently Axion supports a restictive business rule: Parent rows can
> only be
> > deleted if there are not dependent rows. The following two business
> rules are not
> > supported:
> >
> > a) create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)
> references x ON
> > DELETE CASCADE);
> > b) create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y)
> references x ON
> > DELETE SET NULL);
> >
> >
> >
> > 6. Syntax/feature improvement: Deferred evaluation of constraints /
> Transactions
> >
> > Axion has support for:
> > - create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y)
> deferrable);
> > - create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y)
> deferrable initially
> > deferred);
> >
> > I tried to find COMMIT or ROLLBACK at the command line but couldn't.
> And I
> > couldn't find a chance to handle deferred constraints. Oracle has:
> >     SET CONSTRAINT {name | ALL} {DEFERRED | IMMEDIATE}
> >
> >
> >
> > 7. Feature improvement: Support for enabling/disabling constraints
> >
> > Axion currently does not support disabling/enabling of constraints.
> Syntax currently
> > not supported include:
> > - create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y)

DISABLE);
> > - create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y)

ENABLE);
> > - create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y) ENABLE
> > NOVALIDATE);
> > - ALTER TABLE tablename ENABLE [NOVALIDATE] CONSTRAINT name
> > [EXCEPTIONS INTO excptname]
> > - ALTER TABLE tablename DISABLE CONSTRAINT name [CASCADE]
> >
> >

Self-Referring Table

create table a(x number(5), y number(5));
insert into b values (1, 1); // FAILS and should do so

Fixed Issue 5
-------------
insert into c values (1, 1); // FAILS and should do so

Fixed Issue 6
-------------

multi-column-PK/FK-feature issues

create table A(X number(9,0), Y number(9,0));
create table B (X number(9,0),  Y number(9,0));
ALTER TABLE A ADD CONSTRAINT A_PK PRIMARY KEY (X,Y);
ALTER TABLE B ADD CONSTRAINT B2A FOREIGN KEY (X,Y) REFERENCES A;
insert into a values (1,2);
insert into b values (1,1);
insert into b values (1,2);

a. When run with an in-memory database the 4th INSERT doesn't work:
   ava.sql.SQLException: FOREIGN KEY constraint B2A violated.

b, When run with a disk database the 2nd constraint causes the following error message:
   java.sql.SQLException: Unable to write meta file test\B\B.META for table B
   (java.io.NotSerializableException: org.axiondb.engine.TransactableTableImpl)

Fixed Issues 7
--------------

create table A	(X number(9,0),	 Y number(9,0));
ALTER TABLE A ADD CONSTRAINT A_PK PRIMARY KEY (X,Y);

Axion accepts the command but seems to ignore checking the uniqueness:

insert into a values (1,1);
insert into a values (1,2);
insert into a values (2,1);
insert into a values (2,2);

If table has only one column in the PK-definition it seems to work.

ALTER TABLE C ADD CONSTRAINT C2A FOREIGN KEY (X,Y) REFERENCES A(X,Y);

With a command like this I get:
java.sql.SQLException: org.axiondb.parser.ParseException: Parse error at line 1, column 65.  Encountered: ,

Fixed Issues 8
--------------

There seems to be some bug when checking referential integrity columns. Looks as if Axion is checking the column names of the foreign key against the parent table! If column names in parent and dependent table are identical it doesn't matter, if they one gets an Exception:

java.sql.SQLException: undefined column, attribute, or parameter name

See the last two ALTER TABLE commands in the sample script below...
- B2A works fine as table B and table A have identical column names
- C2A doesn't work

create table A (X number(9,0));
create table B (X number(9,0));
create table C (Y number(9,0));

ALTER TABLE A ADD CONSTRAINT A_PK PRIMARY KEY (X);
ALTER TABLE B ADD CONSTRAINT B2A FOREIGN KEY (X)  REFERENCES A;
ALTER TABLE C ADD CONSTRAINT C2A FOREIGN KEY (Y)  REFERENCES A;

Fixed Issue 9
------------

CREATE TABLE: PK/FK-definition in column definition

create table x(y number(5), constraint x_pk primary key(y));
b) create table y(y number(5), constraint y_fk foreign key (y) references x ON DELETE SET NULL);

FIXED Issue 11
-------------

Deferred evaluation of constraints / Transactions: should work if autocommit is false, the console has autocomit set to true all the time. may be we should a SET command for Console to set autocomiit to false.
