synchronizing subtitles

I have cooked some movies for authoring, but the last step, put subtitles,
is giving me a few troubles.

The problem is that the subtitles that I have found, in srt format, are
not in sync with the movies. I was able to synchonize some of them playing
with movie-fps and subtitle-fps on the spumux xml file. This works when
the subtitle starts in sync but degrades as the movie is played. But when
the sub is out of sync from the beginning (starts too late or too soon), I
haven't found an spumux trick to fix it.

Any advice, short of edit the subtitles file manually?

make sure the fps settings of your subtitles is the same as the one of
your video file (25/29 fps pal/ntsc).

"subtitle editor" (http://kitone.free.fr/subtitleeditor/ ) can help you
convert, and can show you the waveform of a sound file (wav or mp3)
along with the subtitles;
This'll allow you to assert wether even when changing the framerates
your subtitle file is flawed from the start on or not.
