Hi folks,

Although I do understand that's maybe not the best place to start such a
debate, there is a question I would like to address to this community.
I'm running Squirrelmail 1.4.15 (btw on FitPC hosting Ubuntu + postfix,
dspam, procmail and dovecot).

When accessing my mailbox through SM relying on Lighty, everything works
quite fine.
I recently deployed Nginx, goal being to replace Lighttpd.

I found some tutorials on internet explaining how to implement FastCGI. So
far so good, I did it but it basically doesn't work.
I mean I can access my mailbox and browse IMAP folders (it's faster than
Lighty) but I'm facing the ".../src/src/compose.php?mail..." error while
trying to compose email. If I manually remove the additional "/src" then
it works (mail is even sent, although I got an error message).

To make it short, SM works with Lighttpd but not with Nginx (I tried
multiple Nginx version, from 0.5 to 0.7.11)
Therefore my question would better fit in Nginx forum (I'm going to do it)
but except with SM, Nginx works well.

Now my question:

Have you ever experienced same behavior?
Google is sometime my friend but he refuses to help on this specific topic
:-)

TIA,
Cheers,

Christian

By definition, the 1.4 branch *is* stable. The 1.5 branch is not - it
is our development branch and is always changing. If you use it, DO
NOT use 1.5.0 nor 1.5.1 - you should use 1.5.2 only.
>> It's not a "parameter". You don't "modify" it. Your problem is NOT
>> SquirrelMail. As I already told you, this is added by your MTA. You
>> need to find out WHY the messages are being rejected from your
>> provider. What you claimed previously is obviously wrong.
>
> I tried to find out where the information "from dnsalias.dreger-net.local"
> and "[192.xxx.xxx.xx2]" comes from. You are pointing to my MTA - what in my
> understanding is hmail. But if that information would be added by hmail -
> why for SM in that way and for Outlook in the other way (working).

Outlook works differently and you have been told this many times.
Your Outlook mail may not even be going via the same email software or
even not via the same server.

> But I found a section in the SM file "Deliver.class.php" (line 489 to 559).
> And from line 546 (Make an RFC822 Received: line) you can see that the
> information ware created by SM.
>
> SM is using the variables "$SERVER_NAME" and "$REMOTE_ADDR".

Which are SEREVR environment variables that Squirrel mail gets from
the SEREVR.

> So I tried to verify if "$SERVER_NAME" and "$REMOTE_ADDR" are
> "dnsalias.dreger-net.local" and "[192.xxx.xxx.xx2]".
>
> So I used a one line php "script" to see what comes from PHP --> phpinfo( );
>
> In the section "Environment" you can find "SERVER_NAME =
> dnsalias.dreger-net.local" and "REMOTE_ADDR 192.xxx.xxx.xx2". "COMPUTERNAME
> SERVERxxx" what is used by Outlook is not used from SM.

'Environment' section are the PHP variables made by getting the
information FROM YOUR SERVER.

This means your SERVER is set wrong to 'domain'.local at least on the
local LAN.

Outlook only gets information from the local machine.

> If I'm running the "script" from the Internet it looks like --> "SERVER_NAME
> = webmail.domain2.dnsalias.org" and "REMOTE_ADDR 192.xxx.xxx.xx1".

All seems perfectly correct to me

> My PHP knowledge is not that good that I can make any changes.
>
>> Show the REAL hostname. Your xxx here are meaningless. A fully
>> qualified domain name ending in .local isn't going to help your cause.
>> You need to go back and review how to set up a legitimate mail
>> server, which is NOT in the scope of SquirrelMail.
>
> SERVERxxx is the real host name.

It is only if you use the system ONLY on a LAN, NOT when connected
to the internet.

>> Again, .local is meaningless. You need a real domain name.
>
> I have tried also using one of my real domains - but it is the same.

Windows servers require you to set the machine name/hostname to
a fully qualified domain name e.g. webmail.example.com

Windows domains/workgroups are completely DIFFERENT.

Your hostname/machine name appears wrongly set.

Your Apache (or whatever webserver software you are using)
may well be wrong and be using different names when accessed
from the local LAN and internet.

Your SERVER setup and its software for webserving, and/or
email serving is wrong. I suspect your networking routing
is wrong as well.

>

SM is a client running on your web server. Outlook is a client
running on your Windows desktop. Very little is the same about them.

> But I found a section in the SM file "Deliver.class.php" (line 489 to 559).
> And from line 546 (Make an RFC822 Received: line) you can see that the
> information ware created by SM.

I already told you SM is not adding this Received line and the MTA is.
If you insist otherwise, you are obviously unwilling to respect my
help, I therefore resign from this thread. You need to sort your
domain and mail server problems out apart from SM anyway.

> SM is using the variables "$SERVER_NAME" and "$REMOTE_ADDR".
>
> So I tried to verify if "$SERVER_NAME" and "$REMOTE_ADDR" are
> "dnsalias.dreger-net.local" and "[192.xxx.xxx.xx2]".
>
> So I used a one line php "script" to see what comes from PHP --> phpinfo( );
>
> In the section "Environment" you can find "SERVER_NAME =
> dnsalias.dreger-net.local" and "REMOTE_ADDR 192.xxx.xxx.xx2". "COMPUTERNAME
> SERVERxxx" what is used by Outlook is not used from SM.
>
> If I'm running the "script" from the Internet it looks like --> "SERVER_NAME
> = webmail.domain2.dnsalias.org" and "REMOTE_ADDR 192.xxx.xxx.xx1".
>
>
>
>
>> Again, .local is meaningless. You need a real domain name.
>
> I have tried also using one of my real domains - but it is the same.
>> Nothing to do with PHP. Open functions/options.php and see if line 52 has this:
>>
>> temporarily disable all plugins in the configuration utility without
>> give.
>
> Nothing to do with PHP. Open functions/options.php and see if line 52 has this:
>
> define('SMOPT_SIZE_NORMAL', 5);
>
> If it does, there may be a include order problem, although I've not
> seen this myself. Are you running any plugins? (Note that you can
> temporarily disable all plugins in the configuration utility without
> actually removing any of them. You should try that.)
>

Man, your fast!,

Yes, I've checked functions/options.php and the define is there. The only
plugins I have are calendar and squirrelspell. I have removed/disabled them and
the notice still appears. Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing:

http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/sqmail/smopt_size-msg.jpg

        Thanks for your quick response.

Guys,

I'm currently a Thunderbird user but I've begun the journey to feeling I'd be much better off with a web-based solution as I now use a few different computers and travel often. VNC'ing into my Thunderbird setup is now growing annoying as it means I need to keep the PC on when traveling and then resolutions and such make reading and composing a challenge.

The catch is that I want a solution that's every bit as robust as Thunderbird in some basic areas. I need a solution that can easily handle mail from several accounts, that has RSS feed support, that can do inline attachments, solid mail filtering, etc., etc., etc.

SquirrelMail looks like a good option for me but I'm a novice. I have NO experience setting up a mail server and so far the entire effort looks gargantuan.

I have a hosting account with GoDaddy (Linux) that is working fine and is currently running a PHPBB 3.0 installation using MySQL so I was able to get that up and running.

However, I have no clue about how to go about choosing the right IMAP server and getting it installed, etc.

Is there ANY sort of help to make this less painful?

In the end I want one main account handled directly (for the domain I have with GoDaddy and that they currently handle the mail for) and the rest to be taken from accounts like Gmail, Hotmail, etc.

Current standard webmail solutions are extremely limited in features or have all sorts of advertising associated with them plus I don't control them so who knows what they'll look like over time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
it might warrent a top post. (again, sorry, but I suspect the person

I see that by having a domain name of xxx.xxx.local, that you are using a
Windows Server that is a member of a Windows Domain, or a Domain
Controller.

I am of course making some assumptions (and again apologize).

You need to visit a registrar (such and www.networkolutions.com or
www.godaddy.com or www.tosdomains.com (there are many more)) and register
a domain name. Once your domain name is registered with a registrar, you
need to tell your ISP and tell them what your domain name is. You will
also probably need to tell your ISP what username and password you created
for the Registrar of your domain name.

There are many spam filters that will not pass mail unless the last part
of the domain name end in .com, .edu, .net, etc. (.local, and .int are all
Windows Domain extensions that are used so as not to confuse the windows
>> problem. It reduced the two "Received:" line too one - but the provider
>> is
>> still blocking me when I'm sending via SM (via Outlook it stiil works).
>>
>> My header looks know like this (just the "Received:" part):
>>
>> Send from the internet:
>> Received: from webmail.domain2.dnsalias.org ([192.xxx.xxx.xx2]) by
>> mail.domain2.dnsalais.org with hMailServer ; Sun, 24 Aug 2008 19:00:49
>> +0200
>>
>> Send from my local network:
>> Received: from webmail.domain1.local ([192.xxx.xxx.xx2]) by
>> mail.domain2.dnsalais.org with hMailServer ; Sun, 24 Aug 2008 18:49:26
>> +0200
>>
>> So my question is still - how to modify the header information:
>>
>> --> "from webmail.domain2.dnsalias.org"
>> --> "[192.xxx.xxx.xx2]"
>>
>> Does anybody know the paramenter - and where to modify it?
>
> It's not a "parameter". You don't "modify" it. Your problem is NOT
> SquirrelMail. As I already told you, this is added by your MTA. You
> need to find out WHY the messages are being rejected from your
> provider. What you claimed previously is obviously wrong.
>
>> PS1: The host name of the server is fully qualified -->
>> serverxxx.domain1.local
>
> Show the REAL hostname. Your xxx here are meaningless. A fully
> qualified domain name ending in .local isn't going to help your cause.
> You need to go back and review how to set up a legitimate mail
> server, which is NOT in the scope of SquirrelMail.
>
>> And in combination with Outlook and hmail it works
>> fine. Just with SM and hmail I have the problem since my mail provider
>> changed his policy.
>>
>> PS2: I cound find the variable "" - is it set in PHP or SM?
>
> There is no variable called "" anywhere.
>
>> PS3: "$domain" is set to "domain1.local"
>
> Again, .local is meaningless. You need a real domain name.

> Hi,
>
> I am having some troubles with Squirrel Mail...
>
> When I logout of one account (dave), and into another account (simon)
> - all the emails in the inbox of the first person (dave) seem get
> merged into the inbox of the second person (simon). So now when Dave
> logs in, he has no emails... and when Simon logs in he has all of
> Daves email as well as his own. New emails to Dave go into his account
> OK, but if I was to login to Dave, log out and then into Simon again -
> all of Daves emails will move into Simon's inbox.
>
> Any one had this issue before?

This is entirely impossible in SquirrelMail. The only known issue in
SM related to multiple user logins is if you DO NOT log out of the
first user account before logging into the second one, the preferences
of the second user will be overwritten with those of the first (IIRC).
This may make some things look like they have moved from user dave's
account into user simon's, but mails simply cannot be moved like that.
Period.

> The mail server I believe is University of Washington.

If you are not the system administrator, please contact them with your
problem. Make sure you are not using any other IMAP client (Outlook,
Thunderbird, etc) at the same time. Make sure you always sign out (if
you want to be really safe, close all browser windows too) before
logging in as another user.
>> Hello all,
>>
>> A client asked me today why he couldn't see the New Mail Options link
>> in the Options page (SM 1.4.15). I had a look, the plugin is enabled
>> in the configure script, but nope, no option to use it in the Options
>> page.
>>
>> So, I had a look at another SM installation I have, and it was
>> there. Strange, so I download a fresh copy of SM and use the same
>> config as the original issue, no New Mail link. Really strange. At
>> this point, I determine the only thing that's different between the
>> one that works and the one that doesn't is the one that works talks
>> directly to the IMAP server, while the one that doesn't uses
>> ImapProxy (as suggested in the SM docs for optimization):
>>
>> http://www.imapproxy.org/
>>
>> As soon as I change the SM install that doesn't work to talk directly
>> to the IMAP server, the New Mail option shows up. Also, it doesn't
>> appear changing the Server Software option in the configure script
>> makes any difference.
>>
>> So, any thoughts on this one?
>>
>
> Display of "NewMail Options" block does not depend on used imap
> server. It
> depends on HTTP_USER_AGENT string provided by browser.
>
> --
> Tomas
> --
>

How does that explain my situation in any way? I'm using the same
browser throughout testing. Change the IMAP server, option shows up,
change it back, option goes away. And for confirmation, I tested
against Opera 9, Firefox 3, and Konqueror (some version or another)
and could confirm it on all three.

Please provide information about used PHP version and third party SquirrelMail plugins. Show all modification that you made in newmail plugin and other standard SquirrelMail scripts.

Issue that you have is not related to IMAP server selection. Standard newmail plugin can't react the way you are saying. newmail plugin does not check IMAP server when option block is added to src/options.php.

The mail server I believe is University of Washington.

Hello all,

A client asked me today why he couldn't see the New Mail Options link in the Options page (SM 1.4.15). I had a look, the plugin is enabled in the configure script, but nope, no option to use it in the Options page.

So, I had a look at another SM installation I have, and it was there. Strange, so I download a fresh copy of SM and use the same config as the original issue, no New Mail link. Really strange. At this point, I determine the only thing that's different between the one that works and the one that doesn't is the one that works talks directly to the IMAP server, while the one that doesn't uses ImapProxy (as suggested in the SM docs for optimization):

http://www.imapproxy.org/

As soon as I change the SM install that doesn't work to talk directly to the IMAP server, the New Mail option shows up. Also, it doesn't appear changing the Server Software option in the configure script makes any difference.

So, any thoughts on this one?

--

Iann Gorrill

Network Analyst igorrill@...

Loose Foot Computing (LFC Hosting)

http://www.lfchosting.com/

1-866-LFC-HOST (532-4678)

Earn Free Hosting by recommending others to LFC: http://www.lfchosting.com/affiliate.shtml

Recommend LFC to a Friend: https://cp.lfchosting.com/Recommend

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

> If a user requests an "On Read" and/or "On Delivery" receipt, it
> just works when the destination address is within the domain as the
> sender...

Squirrelmail Receipt requests are working fine then. The receiving
SMTP server and client are configured to respond to those requests.

> If the destination address is not on the same domain as the
> sender's, the email will go out fine, and arrive to the destination,
> but no request is ever requested nor receipted at the original/
> sender's address.

Then that destination server and/or client do not respond to those
requests. This has been considered _normal_ and desired for at least
the past 5 years. If they did respond then it would be trivial for
spammers to a) verify valid e-mail addresses, b) know when, and by who
their messages were delivered and read. I'd say that most mail servers
have DSN's disabled at this point and that yours works is an anomaly.

>
> Is squirrelmail how does sq compose the mail when a delivery/read
> request is included? what can I check for?

Look for X-Confirm-Reading-To and Disposition-Notification-To headers
in the message at the recipient side.

--
