smart-pinyin suddenly disappears from Simplified Chinese menu (Gutsy)

I had SCIM running perfectly on Ubuntu Gutsy for a few months, then suddenly I noticed that smart-pinyin doesn't appear as an option in the Simplified Chinese section. I tried rebooting several times but it didn't make a difference.
in system>preferences>scim "smart pinyin" simply does not appear anymore
I reinstalled scim-pinyin (sudo apt-get install scim-pinyin --reinstall) but it's still not there. It was there before and magically vanished.
What can I do?

solved it by killing SCIM and deleting all files in my user's .scim folder
