printing from LightZone

I have been using LightZone for Linux (build 6903) for some weeks now, and I am very satisfied. The only thing I cannot get to work is printing. When I try to print a photo the printer-dialog appears, and my printers seems to be recognized. The properties button for the printer however is greyed out. When I hit the print-button the cups-printer-icon appears in the gnome-panel, but nothing happens (printer stays off line). Cups printer status says: job-stopped. This happens on both my Cannon and Epson printer. Printing from Gimp and other programs works fine. I would like to print from LightZone  because of the color management support (which Gimp still doesn't have).
I am using Ubuntu Edgy. I have LightZone installed in my home directory. I have had it installed in /usr/local/bin/ as well, to see if that made any difference, but I encountered the same problem.
Any ideas?

Linux printing through LightZone is largely untested.  I wish I had
better news.

I personally haven't tried much because I assume that things mostly
depend on the printer driver, I only have a few printers, and I have had
a lot of trouble finding good linux drivers for them.

Since you can print well from the Gimp, I assume that your problem lies
in the Java printer layer, which LightZone uses.  On Mac and Windows, we
have had to bypass Java printing entirely to get satisfactory results.
I think we need more information about the linux case.

It would be a great help, Cornelis1 (or anyone reading this) if you
could tell us your printer, whether LightZone can print to it, and
whether any other linux program can print images to it.  If there's a
pattern, then maybe we can work up some diagnostics and fix the problems.

I've been trying to print from the latest LZ build without success too.
Although LZ generates a spool file and adds it to the CUPS queue
successfully for my HP P7660, the PostScript output file itself crashes
GhostScript (which interprets it for the printer).

I'm currently running Sun Java build 1.6.0-b105 on FC5. Since I've
definitely printed successfully in the past, probably while running Java
1.5.0, it seems likely that this is a bug in the JRE...ooh, look!
        http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6506286
(Well, they're calling it a bug in GS, but there is a workaround.)

Cheers,

Ade is right: don't expect LightZone version 2 on Linux to print to
non-postscript printers.

As a workaround, try using export from LightZone and then print the
image file using a non-Java program.

Hi there!

Actutally, Lightzone version 2.1 does print, even though in a rather erratic and  try-and-error-way...

I am running LightZone (ver 2.1, rev 6903) on Ubuntu 7.04; my printer is a Canon iP PIXMA 6000D, which to my knowledge is not a postscript-printer; and I use a turboprint-driver (ver 1.95-2).

My "solution" was to replace the build-in jre-Version 1.6.0 in the LightZone-Folder by a newer Version (update 2!), since I could not get the printer to work with the build-in-version; it stopped with a "No %% Pages: comment in header" in the logs and in the turboprint-setup-menu, which I had open for inspection. With the update 6u2 I still I get "No %% Pages: comment in header"-messages in the turboprint setup menu, but it works...

Only trouble I have is to choose a medium-size. The only size I am able to use is a 10*15 cm (4*6 inches) paper, and  I had a rather hard time finding out how (playing around with margin sizes in the page-setup and printing menu). Any other sizes give raher weird (and apparently unchangeable) margin settings, and they seem to have nothing to do with the actual printing-result. In A4-format I get only partial print-outs with unpredictable margins, 1/4 of the actual picture is printed at best, or no printing occures at all, even though a spool file is created and send to the cups-queue and a paper is run trough the printer.

Is there any information on how LihgtZone printing works with cups resp. turboprint? I am a bit at a loss on the subject - which settings are being used, and which ones are probably overruled? For example: I find different media-sizes in the LightZone page setup and print menu from what the turboprint configuration (LightZone is apparently using too) show me; print resolution in LightZone differs from the settings in turboprint - which of the setting is actally used?

Well, looks like I have to use the workaround, or is there another solution around?

so long

Sun Java 6.0u2 fixes printing

by Ade Rixon :: Rate this Message:

Sun JDK 6.0 Update 2 fixes the printing problems with Linux, removing the
need for editing the output PS file.

If you're running a Fedora or RPM-based distro, the best way to install
the Sun JDK is detailed here:
        http://www.jpackage.org/installation.php
(The current Sun RPM name is jdk-1.6.0_02-fcs.i586.rpm .)

Rename the jre/ subdirectory under /opt/LightZone/ and it should use the
system Java Runtime instead. Note that Lightcrafts recommend that you use
the bundled JRE and will probably not support this configuration. But they
don't support LZ under Linux anyway. ;-)

Cheers,

Hey, this is really great news!
I've already tried it and it worked at first attempt. It's great to see those
prints coming straight out of LightZone!

Only I've noticed  few quirks: i.e. LZ won't accept the idea that my printer
(HP D5160) has a dedicated photo paper tray, so it will always fall back on
the main one.

Also, I'm not sure about all of the settings on the requesters (about paper
size, margins ecc.): it seems to me that they are duplicated in the "page
format" and the "print" requester. I must admit I've been playing with it
only for a few minutes, tough (and above all I didn't RTFM)

Really thanks for sharing!
Paolo
