about the only thing new to LF in this house is last month for the
school science fair, did pin hole photography.  While I found a great
sight that showed how to use the proverbial Quaker Oats box, with a
little suggestion, we upgraded to a Postal Service Priority box and a
spare Graflok back. This way we I mean she could take more than one
shot without heading to the darkroom.

this was also a great excuse to clean out the darkroom and get the
cobwebs off the  8x10 Arkay processing sink that's been neglected for
far too long.  I was concerned that the sink would be too complicated
for her to handle (loading 4 up 4x5 hangers takes some getting used to)
but she opted for the sink over trays, and once she realized the
machine farts, she's been asking to process my film!

The school, more specifically her 4th grade teacher, conspired,
cajoled, and begged to get a garden in the center of the U shaped
school.  Since I didn't participate in the digging and planting I came
out with my 8x10 for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.   I'll try
to scan the neg in a couple days.

Hi:

Any on the list who are physically located in South-Eastern Australia,
i.e. the Sydney/Canberra/Melbourne area: in discussion with a couple of
large format photographers at a workshop at the weekend, the idea was
raised of developing a large format special interest group.

We are interested in getting together a group of like-minded people who
would be interested in meeting in some central location a few times a
year to exchange experiences, technical information, and perhaps even
take some photographs ( --:) ).

Two of us are based in Canberra, and the third is in Mansfield in the
Victorian High Country. We will be canvassing other large format users
in our respective areas, and would like to talk to others from
Melbourne and Sydney (and points in between).

One issue to be sorted is where a central location between Sydney and
Melbourne might be.

Anyway, please email to me off-list if you are interested.

Peter McDonald
Canberra, Australia.

What fun <grin>.  I haven't done any pinhole stuff since about 1972.

My fun for the past year was stepping away from b&w work.  Somehow, I had totally twisted around my E.I. for FP4, not realizing I was shooting about 1.5-2.0 stops over what I should be, which was making the negs rather tough to print. And, at the same time, I was going through a pretty horrible dust plague, so I ended up getting so frustrated I started wondering if large format was truly worth the stuggle.

On a lark, I decided to shoot a box Fujichrome, and let the lab do all the hard bits.  Well!  I've been blasting away happily ever since, ripping through a satisfyingly large number of (expensive!) boxes of film. Just yesterday, I finally got my first 16x20 colour print from a drum-scanned chrome, done on a LightJet (the lab got severely backed up, and it took ages). I had them do it on Fuji "Flex", which is odd stuff -- a very plasticky base, but a stellar gloss.  It's going to look terrific up on my office cubicle wall.

My other fun thing for the year was finally getting a field camera, so I don't have to lug the old Calumet monorail around. As I live in a smallish Canadian city, used fields are really hard to find, so I was ecstatic when I finally latched on to a mint condition Toyo 45A at a decent price.  I'm still learning it's quirks, but very, very happy with it.

Cheers,
\donw in victoria, b.c.

P.S.  Anyone have advice on mounting this Flex stuff?  I'm thinking archival corners might be the way to go... The print has a 2" border all around, so they certainly wouldn't show under an overmat.

It will sag under its own weight. And then, if you've put glass or plastic
in the frame, it will lie against the plastic in circular patches and look
like you've got a big wet spot on the picture.
I finally had to go to having it professionally mounted in a vacuum press on
a very smooth black ABS plastic material.

Egads.  Do you know what sort of adhesive they used?

No, but it was very expensive (32"x40" prints). I seem to recall it was on
the order of $75/print. They looked phenomenal. No orange peel rippling. Now
for the sad part, they all burned up with our house in the Cedar Fire in San
Diego 3 years ago; about 1 week after I picked them up. The good news is
that insurance is a wonderful thing.

Yikes -- just for mounting??

> good news is that insurance is a wonderful thing.

And the better news is that it was just a print, and not *you* or your family!  But, all the same, I hope your negs and transparencies were okay.

Cheers,
