opensoundcontrol.org updates

Hi all.

The opensoundcontrol.org website has been upgraded and updated.  All SPAM comments and user accounts have been removed.  An image CAPTCHA system was installed, and hopefully it will hold up to the relentless spammers for a while.

We maintain a database of OSC-enabled applications, hardware and programming libraries here: http://opensoundcontrol.org/implementations --- the list has been edited to check for broken links and out-of-date information.  If you know of implementations which do not appear on the list, please add them (requires a user account).  If there is an implementation that you maintain, but cannot edit the corresponding page, please email me and I will transfer ownership of the node to your account.

We now also host a bibliographic database of papers, posters and presentations related to OSC, which you can find here: http://opensoundcontrol.org/publications

The database can be exported to EndNote, BibTex, etc.  PDFs are supplied for papers wherever possible.  Community contributions are welcome (Go to Create Content > Bibliography to add a new one).

The database includes the proceedings of the 2004 OSC conference: http://opensoundcontrol.org/2004-osc-conference

Hi,

I just added my software (Dimple), which uses OSC, to the list of
implementations.  However, had I realized it would create a big
announcement about it on the front page of the site, I think I would
have waited until I had an actual new release to announce.
Unfortunately there seems to also be no way to remove the post, so now
what's done is done, I guess.

Do you think you could add a few more instructions to this effect on
the site, when editing a new page?
For instance, I had no idea what the difference between "Description"
and "Body" would be.. now I see that Body is what shows up on the
front page, but there are no instructions to this effect when editing.

It would be nice to have a sentence or two saying, "Description:
please describe your project, how it uses OSC, blahblahblah", and then
"Body: This text will describe your project on the front page."

thanks,
Steve

-Maybe it is also a good thing to provide information on where all the
'variations on the OSC-theme' can be downloaded...

Recently with Schreck we attempted to trace where OSC and it nephews and
cousins/nieces had downloadable quarters, but it turned out they were all
hiding (due to mainly CNMAT server re-arrangements...).

In general it is good to see that OSC is being used, almost in the way
that MPI is a standard for message-passing in multi-processing.

You can edit any node that you created -- including deletion, if you wish.

The body field isn't supposed to appear at all -- I've just fixed this.

Thanks, I didn't see the delete button at the bottom of the Edit page.
(I don't usually "edit" when I want to delete, but it works.)

Anyways sorry it just took me a bit by surprise that it ended up on
the front page.

I am not sure what you want on the web site.  In particular
"OSC-enabled applications" is rather vague.  Csound has had OSC
reading/writing for a couple of year, and a partial system before
that.  Is that relevant or not?

Yes it is relevant.  Csound is already listed, it was added on Nov 2005 and I recently updated the entry to reflect the new features.

In general we would like a list of all the tools that one might use OSC with.

I did look but did not find csound;  is there a search facility? I
found the lists rather confusing, mixing papers with software and no
higher level organisation.
Or my mind is going again...

You probably want to look at /implementations which lists them in a table form.

Search is a good idea -- I will enable that.

Would my Perl library Net::OpenSoundControl available at http://search.cpan.org/dist/Net-OpenSoundControl/ be relevant as well?

Kind regards,

Yes--there is a section for language libraries.
