Hi all,
A call for help with a physical model of a drum...
Joel Laird made some software for accurate synthesis of a kettle drum
with a felt mallet as part of his PhD completed back in 2001. He's
moved on but has graciously released the code under the terms of the
GPL2.
It's written in Borland C++, and I've ported it to compile under Gnu
C++ with automake. I've made a darcs repository here:
http://yaxu.org/darcs/laird/
A tarball is here:
http://yaxu.org/darcs/laird/laird.tar.gz
There are some windows apps and samples in there but the code is all
under "Waveguide Model Code".
I haven't managed to get good (non-distorted) results out of it, and it
is still core dumping sometimes. I'm currently trying to get it to at
least run cleanly under valgrind memcheck.
It is quite a complete model, with a membrane, rim, cavity etc, and as a
result much slower than realtime, but I am hoping that parts of it would
be runnable as a supercollider UGen.
Anyway I could really do with some help with this so if anyone is up for
working on the code then please get in touch.
This is great work that could benefit greatly from the processor
speed-up over the last 7 years!
Cheers,
alex
