Well, thanks in large measure to the enthusiasm of this group, my Admiral and I are heading down to visit Stan in a week.  How I got away with this is beyond me since that day is our anniversary (our 27th), but sometimes one gets lucky.  Anyway we plan to fly into KEDE and either walk or beg a ride from the FBO to get to the GBI factory.  We're not planning on using the guest suite at GBI, but rather renting a Rhodes for the night after the tour and test sail.  We plan on doing some cruising so I'd like us to sleep aboard to see how that works out for us.

I do have more questions for the group.  I'm planning on taking provisions for our anniversary dinner and anchoring somewhere to cook dinner for the Admiral and spend the night.  Possible nearby anchorages look to be Salmon Creek, the Yeopim River, the Scuppernong River, or up the Chowan River near Keel Creek or Holiday Island.  That's "plan A" and I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who's used those anchorages or other suggestions.  We should have most of the afternoon and early evening to reach whatever anchorage we'll use.  Though we do want to spend some of that time putting the Rhodes through its paces ourselves, after the test sail with experts, to see how we handle the boat on our own.  "Plan B" is to punt on anchoring out and cooking and instead dock at Edenton for dinner and possibly to overnight.  It looks as if there are two options for docking - a marina west of town and the city docks.  Any thoughts as to the preferability of one over the other are welcome.  Finally, any suggestions as to a restaurant?  From my internet prowlings it looks like either Seans or Watermans are my best bets.  Both look to be an easy walk from either likely docking sites.  The weather forecast will be the main determining factor in our decision as to "plan A" or "plan B".  After overnighting wherever we'll sail a bit the next day and plan on returning the boat to Stan in the afternoon and flying home to KAKR (Akron, Ohio).

Thanks to all you list posters for patiently answering my questions so far.  I'm sure after our visit to Stan I'll have tons more.   I'm leaning towards a recycled Rhodes depending on how the numbers work out.  No danger of that happening right away though.  It sounds like Stan doesn't work that way for one thing and the vehicle we're taking down to KEDE doesn't exactly tow well.  It's a 1982 Mooney 231 which like the Rhodes is a very purpose built vehicle.  The 231 excels at getting you from point A to point B as efficiently as possible for a flying machine.

Hey Mike, I will trade you my 1988 Rhodes 22 for your Mooney and I won't
even ask for any extra cash even though your plane is older than my  Rhodes.

Rummy, I'm thinking maybe "no".  Aviation been an addiction lots longer than sailing in my case for one thing.

Mike C,

I suspect that you will find the R22 cockpit a bit more comfortable than
that of your mode of transportation to GBI.  For one, you can sleep in it
while underway, not something that I would recommend in the Mooney.  On the
other hand, it would be fairly difficult to travel the route from KAKR in
the R22 (maybe not entirely impossible.)  On the other hand, the Rhodes
burns negligible amounts of fuel ...  If the 231 was your solution to
mid-life, what's the R22 going to be?  Yes, we need our toys ...

Enjoy your visit.  Hope you have great weather for your trip as well as the
sail.

Mike,

Since you are used to traveling in style - the 231 is one superb craft - you will be right at home with the Rhodes.  I'd suggest the simplest option on the overnight - some of the ladies, like mine for one, are uneasy about anchoring out on the first 'date', especially when they savor the conveniences of comodious (sp?) fixtures.  I took my Allison out for a week at our 41st last year, docked every night, and expect we'll graduate to an anchorage in St Pete for our 42nd.  While the wine list choices are countless, some of our skippers just swill Mount Gay Rum, with many flavors to choose from.  Rummy, one of our more qualified, has sage advise on MG he would be thrilled to share.

Your decision to rent and try an overnight will be both fun and a valuable experience and we'll follow your progress on both the flying and sailing.  Our fleet at Boca Ciega has doubled since Ron Singerman's arrival this afternoon.  We rig tommorrow on his beautiful new boat.  I have also found a black R22 at the St. Pete Marine, although no idea who.  Our numbers are growing - today Florida, tommorrow the World!

BTW, I must compliment the Chef on Ron's boat. To say "an excellent job" does not do justice.

Mike, one piece of advice is bring your own, soft comffy sleeping bags and
pillows if you can.  The rest the list will have opinions.  It can get
chilly even this time of year down there on the water.

Chris,

Thanks for the heads up.  We'll come prepared with either sleeping bags or warm blankets for the overnight.  I definitely don't want to spoil the experience for the Admiral by having her get cold!  Based on the long range forecast for Edenton for Friday, looks like we may need rain gear.  Of course, we'd have carried it anyway - just in case.

Mike,
Believe us! There's nothing like a piece of 4" foam cut with a carving knife to fit on top of the opened setee cushions. Rolled up tight, it fits in the forepeak. I piece lasts about 4 years without pilling.
