But in Java Web Start you can't tell where are cache directories (in the facts you can, but it depends on the user home, and it changed from Java 5 to Java 6), and anyway the jnilibs would have to be extracted to ensure Java 3D works.
In applets, it's worse because you can't set any JVM parameters.

Please trust me, creating my own class loader was the very last solution I wanted to implement to solve this problem. ;)
Class com.sun.j3d.utils.scenegraph.io.state.javax.media.j3d.QuadArrayState.java
neglects to instantiate a QuadArray with the complete set restored fields.

TriangleArrayState.java is correct. Bug is fixed by copying the createNode()

Hello,

I am currently learning Java3D and I enjoy it a lot but have a question that is probably easy for all the experts out there.

I have a Background object that I am loading using the Textureloader object and then adding it to a Branchgroup object which is then added to the "root" Branchgroup object(in turn added to the Simpleuniverse). The problem is when I add the image it is always placed at the top of the canvas3D, I would like it centered - is this possible?

Some of the code is below:

fn = "myImg.png";
TextureLoader loader = new TextureLoader(getClass().getResource(fn),null);
Background bg = new Background(loader.getImage());

bg.setCapability(Background.ALLOW_IMAGE_READ);
bg.setCapability(Background.ALLOW_IMAGE_WRITE);
bg.setCapability(Background.ALLOW_COLOR_READ);
bg.setCapability(Background.ALLOW_COLOR_WRITE);
bg.setCapability(Background.ALLOW_APPLICATION_BOUNDS_READ);
bg.setCapability(Background.ALLOW_APPLICATION_BOUNDS_WRITE);

BoundingSphere bounds = new BoundingSphere();

Hi,

all of the "heavyweight" AWT components are opaque. In consequence Canvas3D as a subclass of 'java.awt.Canvas' is opaque as well.

The "lightweight" 'com.sun.j3d.exp.swing.JCanvas3D' component would be an alternative to provide a transparent background (ogl pipeline only). Setting the Java3D system property 'j3d.transparentOffScreen' to true (-Dj3d.transparentOffScreen=true) and calling 'myJCanvas3D.setOpaque(false)' result in rendering a Java3D scene onto the underlying parent component.

Sample implementations of JCanvas3D:

- Java 3D samples : org.jdesktop.j3d.examples.jcanvas3d.*

Thanks for the suggestion; however, the multi-threaded support had no effect on the problem.

I did find a solution using property

"j3d.threadLimit=2"

This causes the frame rate to become normal again.

One strange issue remains: there is a case where I DO NOT need to change this value: it's when I am using an SWT_AWT frame that I configure in an Eclipse Workbench View. Whereas, using "plain AWT" or using an SWT_AWT frame that I configure with the SWT API, the problem is present!

This leads me to believe that the Thread (or perhaps GC) inherited from the Eclipse Workbench View may have been configured in some special way in order to be more multi-core friendly...

I haven't problems with Java3d and dual core before. Actually they work fine so far.

But T¨61 uses NVidia vcard, and some applications fails to use multi thread in OpenGL in this cards. I think it should not happen with Java3D, as it uses a single thread for rendering, but you can try to disable OGL multi-thread support on NVidia control panel :

Any Java3D MT Gurus left on the forum?

I have scenes with animated Textures using imagesUpdaters, and on a Thinkpad T61p (dual core) on Win XP, these scenes run more slowly than normal until I force Windows to set the Java3D app process affinity to ONLY ONE CPU.

Warm greetings,

  I used a technique to introduce a background using the java.awt.image.BufferedImage which enables loading images, such as JPEG, GIF, etc. into my Java3D Virtual World.

  Basically, you load your desired colours (background image), create an Appearance, define the image in the Appearance, create the derised object and assign the appearance during creation then add that to the JPanel.

  For example (code):

com.sun.j3d.utils.image.TextureLoader textureLoader  =
   new com.sun.j3d.utils.image.TextureLoader("C://graphics//texture.jpg", null);

javax.media.j3d.Appearance appearance =
   new javax.media.j3d.Appearance();

appearance.setTexture(textureLoader.getTexture();

com.sun.j3d.utils.geometry.Sphere sphere =
   new com.sun.j3d.utils.geometry.Sphere(100.0f,
      com.sun.j3d.utils.geometry.Sphere.GENERATE_NORMALS_INWARD |
      com.sun.j3d.utils.geometry.Sphere.GENERATE_TEXTURE_COORDS,
      4,
      appearance);

scenegraphBG.add(sphere);

  *Obviosuly the sphere part changes in your code, the color could be defined using a material, the image is optional...

   Hope that helps,
Cheers!

Warm Greetings,

  I am using Java3D to write a First Person Shooter (FPS) Game and have a functional version but am having issues tracking the Z-Coordinate.

  My existing source code uses a char[][] to create a map which is pretty standard in the game industry.

  **My issue comes when trying to find documentation about how the javax.media.j3d.HiResCood breakdown works, how to define the int[] x, int[] y, int[] z so that a simple for...next loop could be used.

   For example, a simple solution would be:

   for (int x=0; x <100; x++){

      for (int y=0; y <100; y++){

          javax.media.j3d.HiResCoord roomLocation =

               new javax.media.j3d.HiResCoord(x, y, 0);

      }

   }

    Obviously this code won't work due to the x,y,z, where z is always 0 is not in
  the 8 integer array approach, so I need to know how to define that to solve my problem.

   Any suggestions would be great. I would rather use the javax.media.j3d.HiResCoord to solve my problem than use the other way which doesn't define a Z-Axis since the FPS game needs to break down the Locale into mulitple Locales in the near future and this would really "kill 2 birds using one stone."

   Also, this would probably solve a lot of other developers needs since there isn't really any decent documentation shipped in 1.5.1 or any previous release for that matter.

  Cheers,
-Cymryjian.
It works, but the quality is not choppy and not good. To improve the quality and make it smoother, I have to decrease the sleeptime in the 3d applet. How can that be configured in Java3D?

The first applet on this page is the one that I will convert:

I do check for NaN myself but not at the time of calling to SetCoordinates(). Instead I check them at the time of SetIndices(). So basically at the end there won't any any indices that point to a NaN coordinate. But looks like in Java3D even if a NaN vertex is not referenced by a index in IndexedArrayGerometry it still won't render anything.

In mac Java uses an older Java3D 1.3.1 unless i override the java.ext.dirs like this

java -Djava.ext.dirs=. -jar app.jar

The above will force the java to user the Java3D that I bundled with my package, but obvious that's too inconvenient because users can no longer just double click on app.jar

I tried setting the java.ext.dirs property from within the application but apparently it's too late to do it then as it keeps using the older Java3D.

Are there any other way of setting java.ext.dirs to some values from JVM start? ie. Manifest? Info.plist? etc?
I have a map into my application in which I have used some icons to represent points into that map.

If I apply a ScaleInterpolator object to the icons, at the initial view I have no problem of visualization, but when I have resized them cause I've zoomed into the map, when the interpolator starts, the icons get back to their initial size and perform their behavior (very annoying).

Is there any way to notify to the interpolator with the new scale/size of the icons so I can get the right animation?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

I figured out the cause. In Mac the OS already comes with Java3D 1.3 pre-installed! So it's using the older version.

One solution is posted here:

http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=233726&#233913

Another one that I'm going to give a try and is much easier if it works would be to change the java extension path:

System.setProperty("java.ext.dirs", ".");

I'll give the 2nd easier way above a try and will post the result here.
