Hello Burkhard :)

It sounds like you may want to request a developer role for the Abeille project if you haven't already done so. Feel free to do that and I will definitely accept the request.

From that point I think you will be able to perform a checkout of the codebase.

Our standard proceedure on the Abeille project is to provide each developer with their own private branch. You can very easily add your changes into that branch and then merging/planning becomes much easier for us as a whole. With that private branch you can feel completely free to check in whenever you'd like and then you can let me know that you'll be merging, etc (or I can handle it if the effort is not major).

Please email me back if you would like your own private branch for which you and/or your team can have access to. Also...can you confirm what source code you have made your changes against? Did you originally download a 2.0 or M1 codebase? (this will assist me in know where to baseline from.
>
> Got your email and made my commits. I hope everything goes fine with > the migration (our code base is not very complex since branching was > used only lately so it should be a piece of cake), I'm glad it finally > happens. I'll try to find a minute tomorrow to take a peek so we can > sync and figure out the next step.
> Hi,
>
> This is an informational email to the Abeille development team. >
> As a reminder six weeks ago we coordinated and scheduled a
> migration of the Abeille codebase from CVS to SVN. CollabNet will
> be executing this migration starting this evening at 9:30pm
> P.S.T. I realise this may be a bit of a short notice...but given
> the circumstances and our window to have the migration completed
> we're going to move forward. If anyone has any outstanding code
> changes (even if not fully completed) we ask that you perform a
> simple check point checkin (and ensure things are compilable).
>
> Any questions please email me back here at the dev mailing list.

> Hi Todd,
>
> Got your email and made my commits. I hope everything goes fine with
> the migration (our code base is not very complex since branching was
> used only lately so it should be a piece of cake), I'm glad it finally
> happens. I'll try to find a minute tomorrow to take a peek so we can
> sync and figure out the next step.
>
> Later!
> migration of the Abeille codebase from CVS to SVN.

Yes...there were a few hitches in the migration and I had to work with Sun over the past 10 days to get things coordinate for the move by CollabNet. Personally, I'm excited to get on SVN and I think we'll find it helpful in a number of ways.

Hi,

This is an informational email to the Abeille development team.

As a reminder six weeks ago we coordinated and scheduled a migration of the Abeille codebase from CVS to SVN. CollabNet will be executing this migration starting this evening at 9:30pm P.S.T. I realise this may be a bit of a short notice...but given the circumstances and our window to have the migration completed we're going to move forward. If anyone has any outstanding code changes (even if not fully completed) we ask that you perform a simple check point checkin (and ensure things are compilable).

Any questions please email me back here at the dev mailing list.

Regards,

Hello! Very good to hear from you. Well first off...that's exciting. I trust you're going to come back with a lot of amazing experiences. :)

I hope so!

First, thanks for the heads up and thank you 10 times over for your involved and contributions thus far. I will try to quickly answer each of your points below. I understand that you may have obvious limited opportunity to contribute. My hope is that you can be a *user* for the next your and when you return you'll have a variety of ideas for new contributions and can jump back in. :)

Sure! There are several things I'd like to see in Abeille: a plugin for Eclipse, support for JGoodies Binding, a human-readible/editable xml format, just to name a few. I hope I'll be able to write a few lines of code to see all this become reality, or at least play with Abeille enough to know it better.

As for the migration. I had reinitiated with Eric Renauld (at Sun) since I have not yet heard from CollabNet. That didn't work out so I then emailed Marla Parker (the leader of the Sun Communicty side of things for community open source). She got back to me today and has reinitiated with CollabNet. So...that means I will still be gunning to get our migration complete here in the next week or so. I will try to communicate as needed.

Keep me posted!

I've had a variety of chat conversations with George from the team in bulgaria. Those of been very good and there was lenghty discussion on I18N support in future releases. These I would formalize and had planned on passing on to you for your input and feedback also and then for open discussion on the dev mailing list (I want at least a somewhat orderly baseline set of requirements and suggestions for discussion to build upon).

Other good news. I have another project team that have pending contributions that initiated with me last week. So there's definitely solid activity and new functionality that simply needs to be coordinated for inclusion at the appropriate time.

I'm looking forward to all of this! It's cool to see that the project is rapidly gaining interest by the community.

Math...one final question/thought. At this point are your changes checked into CVS for your personal branch? If they haven't been yet...are you able to do so before you head out on your trip? That would be great. I can than try to coordinate merging those in at an appropriate time.

I have a bunch of changes I still have to commit; the third-party dependencies decoupling, a rework of the build/versioning procedure and a very small number of refactoring changes. I'll commit that before I leave for sure, I wouldn't want all that work to be lost in the wild! ;)

Again thanks and have a fantastic trip. Please stay in touch if you can.

Thanks, I will for sure.

Math

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing to let you know that in about a month I'll be leaving for a 1 year trip in Asia. I will answer emails on a regular basis so we can stay in touch and continue the discussions on the future of Abeille and its development.
>
>
> Hello all. I noticed that my ButtonGroups weren't working when I used the FormPanel(InputStream) constructor, but that they work when using the FormPanel(String) constructor, pointing to the same .jfrm file.?
> ?
> Furthermore, I noticed that in FormPanel.java, FormPanel(String) and FormPanel(FormComponent) contain a call to "fc.postInitialize(this)", but FormPanel(InputStream) doesn't. When I inserted a call to "fc.postInitialize(this)" in FormPanel(InputStream) (at line 197), my ButtonGroups work.?
> ?
> So, what's happening??
> ?
> I'm working from formsdesigner_src_2_0.zip, by the way.?

Subject: bug? FormPanel(InputStream) constructor not respecting ButtonGroups

Hello all. I noticed that my ButtonGroups weren't working when I used the FormPanel(InputStream) constructor, but that they work when using the FormPanel(String) constructor, pointing to the same .jfrm file.

Furthermore, I noticed that in FormPanel.java, FormPanel(String) and FormPanel(FormComponent) contain a call to "fc.postInitialize(this)", but FormPanel(InputStream) doesn't. When I inserted a call to "fc.postInitialize(this)" in FormPanel(InputStream) (at line 197), my ButtonGroups work.

So, what's happening?

I'm working from formsdesigner_src_2_0.zip, by the way.

Hi Daniel,

Todd here. I'm the project lead on Abeille. First off...glad to see you're using the forms designer.

The intent of the BSD license is to let you use and redistribute the Abeille runtime as you have need. It is highly unrestrictive and thus why the runtime is NOT LGPL.

Wikipedia best describes it as such:

"The BSD License allows proprietary commercial use, and for the software released
under the license to be incorporated into proprietary commercial products. Works
based on the material may even be released under a proprietary license (but still
must maintain the license requirements). Some notable examples of this are the use
of BSD networking code in Microsoft products, and the use of numerous FreeBSD
components in Mac OS X. It is possible for something to be distributed with the BSD
License and some other license to apply as well. This was in fact the case with very
early versions of BSD itself, which included proprietary material from AT&T."
Subject: How to apply the Forms Runtime BSD license

Hello all. I want to redistribute formsrt.jar with a project I'm working on and, though I see that it is released under the BSD license, I'm unclear on some of the license requirements. Specifically, can anyone tell me:

a) What values should I use for the <YEAR>, <OWNER>, and <ORGANIZATION> mentioned in http://www.opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.php?

b) Do I need to reproduce the license notices for any of the following?

i) JGoodies FormLayout (mentioned in abeilleforms/documentation/license.html of formsdesigner2_0.zip)

ii) Batik SVG Toolkit (abeilleforms/documentation/license.html)

iii) Alloy Look and Feel from INCORS GmbH (abeilleforms/documentation/usage/license.html)

c) What does the "Single Developer License for Abeille" mentioned in abeilleforms/documentation/usage/license.html apply to, exactly? Hopefully not the runtime, right?

Thank you.
Hello all. I noticed that my ButtonGroups weren't working when I used the
FormPanel(InputStream) constructor, but that they work when using the
FormPanel(String) constructor, pointing to the same .jfrm file.

Furthermore, I noticed that in FormPanel.java, FormPanel(String) and
FormPanel(FormComponent) contain a call to "fc.postInitialize(this)", but
FormPanel(InputStream) doesn't. When I inserted a call to
"fc.postInitialize(this)" in FormPanel(InputStream) (at line 197), my
ButtonGroups work.

So, what's happening?

I'm working from formsdesigner_src_2_0.zip, by the way.

cvs branch + initial plan to ease merging

Hi George,

I opened a branch for you this morning. Allow me to introduce you to the naming convention, which is quite simple. In the name, you will find all the information required to understand the status of the branch; it tells you:
- the module (right now there is only one module called "abeille")
- the version at which the branch was opened (the first part of the branch always corresponds to a module/version tagged in the repository)
- who (individual or group) is working against that branch

It goes like this: [module]_[version]_[branchname]. Your branch, as an example is named abeille_2-1-0M3_george. Eventually, you might reach a point at which you would like to freeze the code (either you reached a milestone or simply want to make big changes and be able to rollback them if something goes wrong). In this case, we apply a "freeze tag", simply a tag with the full branch name to which we add a number, ex.: abeille_2-1-0M3_george_01. That's pretty much it for code management. I'll explain how we proceed with merges once we get there.

You will need the developper status in the project to be able to commit any changes, otherwise you will need to send patches to either me or Todd so we can commit the changes in the cvs repository. In either case, it is important that the changes work against version 2.1.0m3. The first thing you can do to achieve this is probably to create a patch against the version you started from (2.0?) then try to merge that patch to the version in your branch. Let me know if you have any problem doing this.

Cheers!
Math

Good morning! :) Below is the email I received from George this morning. (read at your leisure)

In the mean time I think it most prudent to create a branch for George and his team as well. Their working against that branch will ease the merge efforts moving forward.

I most definitely want to move to SVN. That is high on my list. As I've thought about it a bit more I'm thinking to tackle that issue first. Stay with java.net as our hosting and see out it goes for a while (and try to explore and push more exposure). If that isn't as successful as we'd like we can make the bigger leap of switching out open source hosting.

Thoughts are my thoughts for now. Thanks again for handling the branching....I DID update my dev environment last night to now develope against the branch you created for me!

Hi George,

Sounds excellent. How large will the archive be? If it exceeds 5MB it might possibly be a bit too large for my email server. (you can always try anyway to see if it goes through). Also...if it's compressed it'll obviously help.

Find attached a ~2 MB zip archive with the modified sources of Abeille.

Now...so you know...Math (another developer) has done a fair bit of work in cutting out dependencies that were in the project for the code generation functionality. This code was originally dependent on NetBeans source that had been pulled into the project by the original developer. This has now been effectively refactored out (the NetBeans specific code that is ) and is now included as a standalone jar file. This type of thing we'll eventually want to apply to your code.

yeah, looks like our changes also should pass through this refactoring... otherwise they cannot be imported into the HEAD.

Also...would you and your team like to have your own private branch (against 2.1 code)? Math is now creating separate branches for developers as needed (or teams if applicable). In this way it would make future changes for you easily merged back into trunk as we move forward. It would allow the assurance that code changes you make are easily managed within core Abeille as well. Please provide your thoughts on this if you would.

No problem for us to work in our own branch. After all, the initial idea was to have the possibility to push our changes into the project and the pull your changes so we stay updated... So that is the goal anyway.

Finally, I am working with Sun Microsystem currently to look into migrating from CVS to SVN. I'm not sure if this change in SCM systems would be a benefit to you or if it would be a negative. Let me know. I know from our end it would be beneficial.

No difference for us, if it is CVS or SVN, so do it the way it is convenient for you.
AFAIR, SVN 1.5 will support merge tracking ( http://subversion.tigris.org/merge-tracking/ ), which should be a convenience for teams who work on separate branches and who merge trunk with branch from time to time. So go for it :)
And good luck with Sun Microsystems, you will need it :):):):):):):):)

I will be flexible in working with you and the team to make things easier on your end.

    Thanks. Me too :)

It is possible that we make further changes in the sources in the very near future, but I do not expect some massive changes, but probably bugfixes...

Kind Regards,

~Todd

    thanks for contacting me.

First, wish you good luck with your attempts to deliver 3.0 version of Abeille :) This sounds great :) I am curious what is there in the "changes list", but that is not so important right now, so don't waste your time explaining me :-)

Thanks for the info regarding your location; I needed it to have a basic idea about the time difference and the usual delay that can be expected in the communication between us. Minneapolis is 8 hours behind Sofia, and Montreal - 7 (we are in DST here also).

    Now about the sources:
what about this: I can send you an archive with the complete source code including all our changes inside. Having it, you can use your favorite way to diff it against the sources of the stable 2.0 release.
Sorry...but I do not believe I ever responded back to your question as to where I'm located.

I'm in Minneapolis, MN (USA). Another key developer on the project is located in Montreal Canada. He will be assisting me in the code review and integration efforts :)f

Good to hear from you! Please see my comments below.

On Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:13 AM, <viegs@...> wrote:

Please go ahead and create a branch for me.

Done! Your branch is named abeille_2-1-0M3_viegs

To get you up to speed on a couple of items I've followed up on (since our least correspondance):

1) The CVS vs SVN issues. I did a bit of research and java.net it turns out DOES have support for SVN. I have contacted Sun and their leads at java.net and am waiting to hear back from them. I have for feedback as to the process we would need to follow to get our codebase migrated to SVN. I explained our concerns with performance of CVS, etc.

That's good news! I'm looking forward to know more.

2) I enquired about possibly moving away from java.net as the hosting point for the Abeille project. I told them it wasn't in stone yet...and that we are in discussions. However, if there is a change we make I don't want Abeille left unmanaged on java.net.

In the event of a move to another hosting point, it would make sense to simply close the project on java.net. Leaving it unmanaged could damage the reputation of the project by leaving visitors with the impression that the project is no longer maintained, and that would be disastrous and in opposition with the goal of moving.

3) I'm also looking into ways to increase exposure if we stay on java.net.

I found that java.net provides a way to publish web content (as described here http://community.java.net/projects/publicize.csp), however the way it works is somewhat unnatural (html files are put to cvs). It would be great if we had a way to manage the files outside the cvs repository, but it could be OK for a start.

4) Finally...I re-initiated with George to obtain a stable release of the much larger 3.0 changes that he and his team have done. I want to review that work and then plan out a code review and merge at some point. This is at least a first step.

I read the email you sent to George. I hope he's still interested in sharing the code. It is important however to make sure that the code is free of any copyright issues; in other words, that the code belongs to him and that he agrees that we modify and redistribute it without restrictions.
By the way, would you like me to open a branch for him too?

Goodbye!

Hi Todd,

It's confirmed now, the tag abeille_2-1-0M3 has been applied successfully. I intend to open a branch to commit the changes I made so far to abeille and I could open one for you too if you want. All we need now is to decide what naming convention we would like to use for branches... I propose to use developers' names like you suggested for the moment. The naming scheme can be changed at a later time if we feel it does not work well anymore. What do you think?

Math,

To elaborate a bit more on some of the related questions/comment you originally made:

...additional comments on that first email. I know you'd asked for me to provide the tag name for application to the head. Currently trunk is at a 2.1 M3 state (as I just mentioned in my last email). based on this info...do you have enough to infer a proper tag name for it? If not please respond back and I'll try to get back to you with additional information.

...as far as hosting a project website. You're totally right with regards to search and project presentation. There could be a big step forward in the area of visibility if these could be improved. Abeille is the single open source WYSIWYG Forms Designer to compete with the commercial counterparts. I'd love to see it get more exposure and be brought to the surface.

Let's start a serious discussion on what would be entailed to move the project to Sourceforge. I may need to talk to one of the contacts at Sun to see if there are any complications related to moving it. (I would hope not...but we'll see). Is there anything else that you have knowledge on as far as what this would take? I would gladly take time to research this further...but with being swamped I'm trying to hammer out the last stages of work on these projects I'm trying to wrap up.

Anyway...I hope this extra email maybe answers any other points you had made!

More later,

Hi George,

Sounds excellent. How large will the archive be? If it exceeds 5MB it might possibly be a bit too large for my email server. (you can always try anyway to see if it goes through). Also...if it's compressed it'll obviously help.

Finally, I am working with Sun Microsystem currently to look into migrating from CVS to SVN. I'm not sure if this change in SCM systems would be a benefit to you or if it would be a negative. Let me know. I know from our end it would be beneficial.

I will be flexible in working with you and the team to make things easier on your end.

I just need to ask tomorrow if the other guys here have something else to commit.

    Your suggestions are welcome!

Best regards and looking forward your reply :)
Sorry...but I do not believe I ever responded back to your question as to where I'm located.

I'm in Minneapolis, MN (USA). Another key developer on the project is located in Montreal Canada. He will be assisting me in the code review and integration efforts :)f
Our wish to collaborate with your team regarding the Abeille project didn't disappear; we are just slightly busy with the usual very-urgent-tasks-right-after-the-vacation ... :(
Hi Todd,

Good to hear from you! Please see my comments below.

On Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:13 AM, <viegs@...> wrote:

Thanks Math!

I found that <a href=&quo
