Sorry if am asking so many questions,
but i really did understand what you meant by
>"use the jPOS ISOMeter and create a swing based monitoring tool"
what does it take to achive it.

Do i simply have to make all the definitions in the isometer xml file
with say tags like
<menubar id="MAIN">
<object class="org.jpos.ui.action.Exit" id="exit" />  etc

or you mean something else, please help me understand that concept.

Alejandro gave me some isometer file definitions which have helped me
incorporate some functionality in the isometer GUI with action menus.
Challenge is on how to code the functionality for functions like
signon, signoff etc.
The Exit/Quit function is working fine, but i really didn't understand
how its possible because when i look at the isometer definition all i
have is
<menuitem id="Quit"  accesskey="Q" action="exit" /> with in the <ui>
tag and
<object class="org.jpos.ui.action.Exit" id="exit" />

I don't see the relationship between the two items. I thought that may
be the id would match.
But they don't, in <menuitem> id="Quit" while in <object> id="exit".
May be you could help me understand the technique used.

thanks,
> > As for the Nagios option, I understand Nagios is made to run on Linux
> > os, have you tried it on Windows? How will I be able to do the
> > monitoring for my windows based JPOS Host application?
>
> You would have to write the code to run inside of your jPOS solution
> that Nagios could query for your status(es). This is mentioned :-
>
> "and create some small services in jPOS..."
>
>
>
> > I didn't get a clear understanding of the JPOS Isometer approach to
> > monitoring, do you mind giving me some direction on how to achieve
> > it?
>
> If your jPOS solution is running on a machine with a screen (a keyboard
> and mouse might be useful too) that a gui display can be rendered onto,
> then an ISOMeter will display the status of a channel say within a swing
> rendered display. This would allow visual monitoring and some interaction.
>
> "use the jPOS ISOMeter and create a swing based monitoring tool"

Exactly, that makes sense, because BSHUI is not available and you can't
run the BSH scripts.

>
> Whats the secret in the action files above being .bsh files? Is it
> possible to have them defined in a different format?
>
> At first I thought echotest.bsh was a java file, but then i realised
> there was no class definition.
>
It's a BeanShell script (see http://www.beanshell.org)

>
> So how does JPOS running on a windows env interprete and run/execute
> these files once i click on the respective action menu.
>
BeanShell

>
> In the definition of echotest.bsh, i dont' see any reference to the
> server ip or port, how is it possible
> that it can send an echo test?
>
It uses the already defined channel and send the message through the
jPOS Space, our coordination infrastructure.
>
> Did you download the tigris tortoisesvn client I pointed you towards?
> If you did and allowed the right mouse button integration, then you can
> access the tortoisesvn interface by right clicking your mouse on a
> folder in an explorer window and then click :-
>
>         TortoiseSVN >
> Enter the urlhttp://jposee.googlecode.com/svn/in the dialogue provided
> and the repository will be displayed and you can check out the trunk to
> the base folder of your choice.
>
>
>
> > how about the keyword checkout, is it an option passed to svn?
>
> It is and would result in the code being checked out from the repository
> into the directory in which you are sitting at the command prompt. If
> you are using the tortoiseSVN gui, then the command happens behind the
> I have tested the script and it is good for monitoring the server,
Good to know you like it.

>
> And with my couriousity i have a few questions:
> - is there a way to make the log listener area (bottom area) to
> running in auto-scroll when the message comes?
>
Ha! Yeah.. I want that too, I guess you could have a look at
modules/jpos/src/org/jpos/ui/factory/LogListenerFactory.java and give it
a shot. It has been some time since my last Swing based project so I
don't know exactly how to deal with the slider in realtime, but I'm sure
it's doable.

>
> - I have dblogger which save the status of messages into database. Can
> I add a new cell to show the database's record? maybe in JSP or
> something..
>
You can create a custom UI factory and integrate your own components
into the UI (any JFrame). There's a very interesting one, the
HtmlFactory that lets you put a mini browser inside the jPOS UI.

Thanks so much for this piece of code,it's really a good starting
point.
I still can't believe that this could be achieved in just the ISometer
file, am so happy its possible.

Unfortunately, I have not succeeded in testing the echotest.bsh
First, my isometer couldn't start, so I thought that may be this was
due to the version of JPOS i was using(jpos-1.5.0.jar)
so I changed it and pasted in my lib folder the jpos.jar file that is
generated when you build jpos-1.6.2.
With the above change, the ISometer was able to start.

Then I got another error on clicking the echotest menu, I really don't
know why.
Could this be because am using windows?
>  <object class="org.jpos.bsh.BSHAction"  id="bsh"  />
> </qbean>
>
> Then cfg/echotest.bsh looks like this:
>
>     import org.jpos.iso.*;
>     import org.jpos.space.*;
>
>     Space sp = SpaceFactory.getSpace("jdbm:stan");
>     long stan = SpaceUtil.nextLong (sp, "stan");
>
>     ISOMsg m = new ISOMsg();
>     m.set (0, "0800");
>     m.set (7, ISODate.getDateTime(new Date()));
>     m.set (11, ISOUtil.zeropad (Long.toString(stan % 1000000), 6));
>     m.set (70, "301");
>     sp.out ("send", m);
>
> You can add more cells and monitor channels as well as servers.
>
>
>
> > I know that clicking on the Isometer screen gives info close to that
> > of (2) above in the form
> > 1200 -->
> > <-- 1210,
> > However,this info may not be easily understood by a normal user. Thats
> > why I was thinking of building such a control GUI around it.
>
> You can certainly create your own component, you can use ours as a sample starting point.
- is there a way to make the log listener area (bottom area) to

You can add more cells and monitor channels as well as servers.

>
> I know that clicking on the Isometer screen gives info close to that
> of (2) above in the form
> 1200 -->

hoping you are doing fine.

Well I need some assistance,
How can I build a simple GUI around my JPOS ISOServer application so
> os, have you tried it on Windows?

>

> > Actually it seems I had skipped a number of steps.
>
> > So Ideally I need to go through the following stages first;
> > - Getting an svn client
>
> Yep, so you can checkout the code.
>
> > - Getting ant installed and available on your path (ant.apache.org),
> > ( This I already have)
>
> Ok, good.
>
> > - Installing and running a MySql database server ( I have an instance
> > already)
>
> Excellent
>
> > - Downloading and setting up cygwin (www.cygwin.com)
>
> So you may make use of the unix scripts that are provided, the
> alternative is to prepare your own, although a fairly recent discussion
> on this mailing list did include a windows bat file from Dave I think.
>
> These are the primary prerequisites that are needed just because you are
> a windows user 8(. Although you have some boxes checked already.
>
>
>
> > Let me do that and then get back to the jpos-ee-setup-howto.
>
> Have fun.
C:\>java -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote -jar q2.jar
Created MBeanServer with ID: 60420f:11ce0bbd529:-8000:nep001:1

But on launching the jconsole tool I was unable to connect to the
Local q2.jar process.
Its gives a msg that "The management agent is not enabled on this
process.
So am wondering what could be the cause for this problem.

As for the Nagios option, I understand Nagios is made to run on Linux
os, have you tried it on Windows?
How will I be able to do the monitoring for my windows based JPOS Host
application?

I didn't get a clear understanding of the JPOS Isometer approach to
monitoring, do you mind giving me some
direction on how to achieve it?

thanks

> > Do you mean running the ISOServer with the following option would
> > invoke the JMX Agent;
> > java -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote -jar q2.jar
>
> That can be a start, you can use jconsole or you can create your own JMX-based
> monitoring application.
>
> You can also use the jPOS ISOMeter and create a swing based monitoring
> tool (provided your jPOS application can access a display and it's not a
> daemon/service).
>
> Or you can use something like Nagios and create some small services in
> jPOS to be more Nagios friendly.

> Actually it seems I had skipped a number of steps.
>
> So Ideally I need to go through the following stages first;
> - Getting an svn client

>

Have fun.

Hi Alejandro

Thanks for your response. After some more experimenting, I had
understood most of what you've suggested below. I changed to xml
channel and it worked.

I am trying to experiment and play with it to understand how it all
fits together.

I am doing a poc on sending an xml message build from a card swipe and
other data input through a touch-screen to the hub which would then
forward it on to the right channel.

I am trying to use an xml based approach and am trying to understand
the best approach for my design.

However, I am confused about the relationship between the qserver, the
qmux and the channel.

I am running q2 locally and I deploy a sample-server, a sample-channel
and a sample-mux.

<server name="sample-server" class="org.jpos.q2.iso.QServer"
logger="Q2">
        <attr name="port" type="java.lang.Integer">8000</attr>
        <channel name="sample-channel"
class="org.jpos.iso.channel.XMLChannel"
                packager="org.jpos.iso.packager.VXMLPackager" logger="Q2" />
        <request-listener class="com.test.MemberInfoRequestListener"
logger="Q2" />
</server>

As you mentioned, the client is in a different jvm, so obviously, it
cannot use the nameregistrar or space. I connect the client to the
server using the following code.

                XMLChannel channel = new XMLChannel("localhost", 8000,	new
VXMLPackager());
                ((LogSource) channel).setLogger(logger, "sample-send");
                channel.connect();
                ISOMsg m = new ISOMsg();
                m.setdata .... ;
                channel.send(m);
                ISOMsg r = channel.receive();

This works. Is this the approach for how I should setup the pos
client?

But I am confused about how to use the mux in all this. Looking at the
space code, this will only be accessible within the server jvm. Am I
supposed to setup the mux for channels to route the received message
into?

<mux class="org.jpos.q2.iso.QMUX" logger="Q2" name="sample-mux">
        <out>sample-send</out>
</mux>

<channel-adaptor name="sample-channel-adaptor"
                packager="org.jpos.iso.packager.VXMLPackager" header="ISO016000055">
>
> You also have a problem there, your channel uses ASCIIChannel and
> > trying this out for 2 days. I got the programmer's guide and went
>
> > I am new to the pos env and am trying to learn and understand.
>
> > I tried the examples and the plain java ones were fine.
>
> > However, I'm trying to understand how qserver fits in this.
>
> > I ran my test class and it sent a msg but timed-out on the response
> > and I have no idea why.
>
> > I would really appreciate it if someone could help me in this.
>
> > My setup is as follows.
>
> > I ran q2 and setup the example channel as follows.
> > <channel-adaptor name='sample-channel-adaptor'
> > class="org.jpos.q2.iso.ChannelAdaptor"
> >            <property name="host" value="localhost" />
> >            <property name="port" value="8000" />
> >            <property name="packager-config" value="cfg/packager/
> > iso87ascii.xml" />
> >    </channel>
> >    <in>sample-send</in>
> >    <out>sample-receive</out>
> >    <space>tspace:default</space>
> > </channel-adaptor>
>
> > Then, I setup qmux as follows.
>
> > <mux class="org.jpos.q2.iso.QMUX" logger="Q2" name="mymux">
> >    <in>sample-receive</in>
> >    <out>sample-send</out>
> > </mux>
> > Then I setup the server as follows.
> > <server name="sample-server" class="org.jpos.q2.iso.QServer"

Actually it seems I had skipped a number of steps.

So Ideally I need to go through the following stages first;
- Getting an svn client
- Getting ant installed and available on your path (ant.apache.org),
( This I already have)
- Installing and running a MySql database server ( I have an instance
already)
- Downloading and setting up cygwin (www.cygwin.com)

Let me do that and then get back to the jpos-ee-setup-howto.
> > OR there is some extra work that has to be done?
>
> I would carefully follow the instructions at the link Alejandro gave
> (http://jpos.org/blog/2007/10/11/jpos-ee-setup-howto/) first.
>
> As you are running windows the steps are a bit different and you must
> satisfy the recommended prerequisites, which include, but are not
> limited to  :-
>
> - Getting an svn client (so you can sign out the code (I use tortoisesvn
> fromhttp://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/),
> - Getting ant installed and available on your path (ant.apache.org),
> - Installing and running a MySql database server
> - Downloading and setting up cygwin (www.cygwin.com) to allow you to use
> the scripts that are downloaded, instead of putting together your own
> for windows.
>
> Each of these items has a how-to of their own, so take your time carry
> out each step in the jpos-ee how-to correctly and completely before
> moving onto the next. I think you will find it challenging, but worthwhile.
>
>
>
> > Do I need to download some JMX API or its part of the JDK
> > distribution.
>
> It is separate but it will be downloaded as part of the svn checkout -
> or subsequent "ant" invocation. Certainly when I followed the how-to,
> it was just there I didn't download anything directly myself.
>
> I followed this (http://jpos.org/blog/2007/10/11/jpos-ee-setup-howto/)
> how-to quite recently, and I would say that on windows it is much harder
> (than on unix). Mainly because of the absence of facilities and the
> need to setup 'basic' tools like svn. I did not use cygwin myself, but
> I know this mailing list does have guidance should you need it.
>
> Take particular care with :-
>
> - space character in the names of directories in which jars are kept,
> - running the commands in the correct directory :-
> invoking bsh needs to be done from inside the build folder,
> invoking ant takes place within the folder you checked
>      everything out to.
>
> Once you have jpos-ee setup and running, then Andy's on-boarding guide
> will make more sense to you as it will align with your vanilla setup.
>
> > Also where can I get the download for JPOSEE, currently when I try
> >http://code.google.com/p/jposee/downloads/list, the list is empty.
>
> See above and below...
>
>
>
> > Meanwhilehttp://jposee.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jposeereturns "page
> > cannot be found" error.
>
> You need to know that you should use a subversion client to checkout the
> code and fixtures (following the instructions on the link given).
> > Had I not asked, I really wouldn't have known the behaviour of
> > JPOS(padding to full length) incase the acquirer sends
> > too few bytes in a fixed length field.
> > So like you have advised, its a good idea that for such fields one
> > does an extra check before querying the database,
> > just incase the acquirer sends bad data.
> > > > So one has to take extra care incase the acquirer system sends a field
> > > > with length less than the one defined in the Isopackager. But it would
> > > > only affect incase you further pass this field as a parameter to say
> > > > some database procedure which in turn exceutes certain select stmts
> > > > with this value.
>
> > > No, not really.
>
> > > If the acquirer system actually sends too few bytes in a fixed length
> > > field then the message is *bad*, and a parsing error will occur as the
> > > field following this error fail to line up, or the message is found to
> > > be short.
>
> > > Any unpacking software will just take the expected number of bytes out
> > > of the network for a fixed length field, that is all it can do.
>
> > > It is up to the acquirer system to specify the correct data in all
> > > fields. If they build a message with an incorrect terminal_id, then
> > > your database query *should* fail, and a decline or reject should
> > > result. If you know the terminal cannot have spaces then you could
> > > check this before querying your database and save your database some
> > work.
>
> > > When you are *building* messages (using jPOS anyway) this behaviour can
> > > be useful to you, but knowing it happens is useful.
> I am new to the pos env and am trying to learn and understand.
>
> I ran q2 and setup the example channel as follows.
> <channel-adaptor name='sample-channel-adaptor'
> class="org.jpos.q2.iso.ChannelAdaptor"
> 	logger="Q2">
> 	<channel class="org.jpos.iso.channel.ASCIIChannel" logger="Q2"
> 		packager="org.jpos.iso.packager.GenericPackager"
> header="ISO016000055">
> 		<property name="host" value="localhost" />
> 		<property name="port" value="8000" />
> 		<property name="packager-config" value="cfg/packager/
> iso87ascii.xml" />
> 	</channel>
> 	<in>sample-send</in>
> 	<out>sample-receive</out>
> 	<reconnect-delay>5000</reconnect-delay>
> 	<space>tspace:default</space>
> </channel-adaptor>
>
> Then, I setup qmux as follows.
>
> <mux class="org.jpos.q2.iso.QMUX" logger="Q2" name="mymux">
> 	<in>sample-receive</in>
> 	<out>sample-send</out>
> </mux>
>
> Then I setup the server as follows.
> <server name="sample-server" class="org.jpos.q2.iso.QServer"
> logger="Q2">
> 	<attr name="port" type="java.lang.Integer">8000</attr>
> 	<channel name="sample-send" class="org.jpos.iso.channel.ASCIIChannel"
> 		packager="org.jpos.iso.packager.XMLPackager" logger="Q2">
> 	</channel>
> 	<request-listener class="org.test.TestRequestListener" logger="Q2">
> 	</request-listener>
> </server>
>
> Then, the test class :
>
> public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
> 		Logger logger = new Logger();
> 		logger.addListener(new SimpleLogListener(System.out));
> 		Space sp = SpaceFactory.getSpace();
> 		System.out.println("sp = " + sp);
> 		ISOMsg m = new ISOMsg();
> 		m.setMTI("0800");
> 		m.set(3, "000000");
> 		System.out.println("OUT m = " + m);
> 		ISOMsg m2 = (ISOMsg) sp.in("sample-receive", 10000);
> 		System.out.println("IN m2 = " + m2);
> 	}
>
> Thanks in advance
> Do you mean running the ISOServer with the following option would
> invoke the JMX Agent;
> java -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote -jar q2.jar
>
That can be a start, you can use jconsole or you can create your own JMX-based
monitoring application.

You can also use the jPOS ISOMeter and create a swing based monitoring
tool (provided your jPOS application can access a display and it's not a
daemon/service).

Or you can use something like Nagios and create some small services in
jPOS to be more Nagios friendly.

- Getting an svn client (so you can sign out the code (I use tortoisesvn
from http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/),
- Getting ant installed and available on your path (ant.apache.org),
- Installing and running a MySql database server

>

> Also where can I get the download for JPOSEE, currently when I try
> http://code.google.com/p/jposee/downloads/list , the list is empty.
See above and below...

>
> Meanwhile http://jposee.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jposee returns "page
> cannot be found" error.
You need to know that you should use a subversion client to checkout the
code and fixtures (following the instructions on the link given).
Had I not asked, I really wouldn't have known the behaviour of
JPOS(padding to full length) incase the acquirer sends
too few bytes in a fixed length field.
So like you have advised, its a good idea that for such fields one
does an extra check before querying the database,
just incase the acquirer sends bad data.

thanks
