ignition system questions....

working on a 1986 xv 750

has a bug in the ignition system.  when it is not working properly she runs weak & backfires.  i confirmed that it is electrical by adding a battery charger while it was running rough, it smoothed right out, then when i  removed the charger it went back to boggy throttle & occasional back fires.  i have replaced the battery, coils, & spark plugs.  i cleaned the battery connectors which had some corrosion on them.  before i replaced the battery & cleaned the connectors i went on a short ride, shut the bike off, i went to start it & it went completely dead.  it doesn't do that anymore, but it still has an occasional boggy throttle & back fire, which seems to iron itself out around 4000rpm.  i put a voltage meter on the battery, it shows 12.5 before i start it, then running it goes up to around 13.5.  when i apply throttle, the meter drops slightly, is that normal?  any suggestions on how to nail down this bug?  also, what is a good way to clean connectors & prevent further corrosion?  also, i am totally new to working with a voltage meter, so if tracking this bug requires different settings on the meter, could you please include them.....

thank-you in advance,

jody.

Dielectric grease is for electical contacts. If you can't find it try and automotive parts place. mechanics use it.

You replaced the battery (fully charged) and it ran good, once the battery was sufficiently drained of power it would run bad, and then not start -so the bike is not generating enough power to run and charge the battery.

Check connections, grounds, and the stator/recifier and voltage regulator.

run a new negative from your battery to the steel frame, better grounding. next remove and clean the reg/rec behind the left passenger foot peg, using steel wool or a stiff brush clean the dust, dirt and corrosion away from both surfaces. any wires that are conducting the electricity need to be checked and cleaned..  http://viragotech.com/wiring/Indexofwiring.html    good luck

yg,

do you mean just the outer surfaces of the regulator, the side that is touching the mounting surface to the foot peg & the other side that is exposed to the internal side of the bike?  how does this affect the level of current flowing through the regulator?  i noticed that my current ground wire is attached to the part of the frame that is also a channel for air flow, would you suggest moving the ground location closer to the battery?  how does your bike read on a voltage meter when you apply throttle, could it be that i have a bad charging system?

anyway, thanks for the help again....

jj: our charging systems are weak and must be in top shape to perform..the reg rec is the device that directs the charge from the stator to the battery..as you note the way it is built you notice the fins on the metal casement are used as a heat sink.which also sinks througfh the mounting position on the frame..all used to wick the heat away from the reg rec as quickly and efficiently as possible. if the reg rec is dirty and if there is corrossion between the reg rec and the frame, the heat will linger in the reg rec making it less efficient and possibly burning it up...3000 rpm is the point at which the reg rec opens to allow current to flow from the stator to the battery, a weak battery will mean the reg rec is working overtime, opening, to keep the battery charged.. a new battery will charge faster and stay charged longer thus not putting as much strain on the reg rec....the cleaner it is the better it works dissipating the heat..
unless we are riding above 3000rpm there will be a drain on the battery from the ignition/lights/signals..ive not measured my voltage but it should not vary much from 12volts,,im thinking no less than 10 or 11 and no more than 14 is what ive read...keep me posted on your numbers ,,take care yg

frustration is setting in......

so i cleaned the reg rec, i added a new ground to the frame, as well, i used dielectric grease on my contacts.  i think that the grease was a mistake, the bike is now running consistently bad with occasional smooth points, where it was the opposite before.  i talked to a yamaha mechanic & he said that the grease with impede the current on a 12volts.  i have spent the evening trying to clean the grease out of the contacts, using picks & files, grease remover & contact cleaner.  the bike will run, but it is rough.  i am stuck, any ideas????

i learnt an important lesson though, always check the bike after each step, for some reason i thought i was doing such good work that i'd do it all in one shot, now i don't know what step caused the problem.  arrgghh.

thanks,

jody.

check stator wires; ohms should be high ,near infinit resist. a low reading would indicate a short.
PU coil should read 155 ohms
primary coil 4.2 ohms
secondary coil 13.2K ohms

how do you check ohms?  i do not understand how to set my multimeter, what to set it on, what to look for?  it seems to jump around all the time, what would you set your meter on to test these things?

thanks,

jg.
