helloworld project not working

Finally got through building the gumstix-basic-image.
However, could not get through the helloworld tutorial. I did everything exactly as the tutorial. Error message I'm getting is hello.c:1: error: expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or '__attribute__' before string constant I am running Fedora core 8.
