gmail integration portlet

Has anyone developed a portlet that integrates with gmail that both
alerts users to the fact that they have new mail and allows them to
click through to either read the message or log in to their gmail
account to read the message?

Since Google doesn't offer an API to Gmail, the only way to accomplish this would be to do it via IMAP or POP. The JASIG hosted Mail Portlet sort of does what you describe apart from clicking through to the actual email, that presents all kinds of challenges because it would be different for every email vendor out there. And I am guessing it wouldn't be possible for Gmail without an actual Gmail API. There are unofficial apis out there in the wild, but they have just reverse engineered the URLs in Gmail itself which seems pretty fragile to me.

I am actually surprised that Google doesn't have a Gmail API, they have an API to migrate email from other systems into Gmail. They also have APIs for Picasa Web Albums, Google Docs, Google Calendar, YouTube and many more, but no Gmail:(

Parker,

so are you actually using this with gmail?  It does look like it might
accomplish half of what we want.  What all do you have to do to get it
to work?  Does it just list new messages or the first several messages
at the top of your inbox?

Storing briefcase files on an external server

We are in the process of moving from a single web server to having two servers. The default configuration for the Toro Briefcase portlet is to save file on the web server. This works fine for a single web server but when that server has two instances of tomcat or you add a second server your chances of a having a file available on that server drop off. Our installation is uportal 2.6 on RedHat 4 with a Postgresql 8 database back-end on a separate RedHat 4  server. Another server is set up with samba that can be the file storage. I've read through the Briefcase documentation and don't see how the configuration should be changed to use the samba share.
Any suggestions on how others have set this up or example configurations would be appreciated.
