Why the past tense? Are you no longer working on that project?

I assume you have found the class SimpleBookmark.
Use that class to fetch the information.
If by "index" and "contents of the page" you mean
that you want to read a PDF page that prints an index
and/or a table of contents, you are asking something
that is impossible with iText AND with any other program.
If by "contents of the page" you mean you want to read
the content stream of a page, then it's possible with
iText, but you'll have to be more clear as to what you
intend to do with that content stream.
