I was probably not fully registered when I first sent an earlier version of the foollowing:

Given the fact that the most recent DVDA-author source code available seems to be that of David Chapman from 1995, my son and I decided to have a look at the code with the idea of resolving a couple of nuisance items, such as the frequent negative apparent project size and the necessity for iterating to adjust the audio PP starting position. We were also intrigued with the idea of being able to produce multi-channel DVD audio discs.

After a couple of weeks of intensive work, we now have a working revision with the following features: 1) a small number of bug fixes, some probably platform-dependent and others that didn't affect the two channel version; 2) removal for the necessity of iterating on the audio PP starting position; in all the cases we have encountered, except for hybrid discs, the information required to calculate the required value of PP is available before it is needed and therefore its determination has been made automatic, although the possibility for manual setting has been retained for compatibility and for special purposes; 3) support for multichannel authoring, i.e., 3, 4, 5, or 6 channels at 16 or 24 bits and all the usual sampling rates, namely, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 kilohertz. Of course, certain combinations are beyond the capability of standard players, but our version of the program does not prevent such files from being produced.
At present, flac support has been commented out, but probably can be restored easily. However, my understanding is that some problems have been identified with the built-in flac support, so perhaps that issue should be considered before restoration.

The purpose of this communication is to determine the level of interest in our making the code and a PC executable available.

Thanks for letting us know!
I am very interested.
Maybe few of the developers on this list could review the code changes?
And perhaps restore flac support?

I could then help testing the code.

Does it support tricks for gapless playback on players that normally hiccup on every track?

Kind regards,
Udo

Hi Lee,

you'll be welcomed to contribute. I suggest that you could prepare your code for a Subversion branch, while I'll put my new code in the trunk.
Then we'll be merging both, weeding out possible bugs or issues, weather permitting.

The belated 08.06 version of dvda-author has just been released with these top new features:

1. hybrid DVD support with navigation from audio zone to video zone and vice-versa.
Note: use your remote control. Navigation is done by pressing on " direct access" buttons (numbered 1, 2, ..., 9)
not by arrow keys. Video linking groups come last (eg. if you have 5 audio groups and 2 video-linked groups, press 6 or 7 to get to video zone directly).
Time values for video tracks are only guaranteed with Lplex-made video zones.

2. FLAC-1.2.1 and ogg FLAC support on Unices and Windows/Cygwin

3. Severely cut down on memory allocation, which could be useful for embedded development later on. A couple of related bug fixes. Extended valid path lengths.

4. I/O enhancements:
audio files may be packed in input directories which are parsed by the application.
    verbosity levels were added.
    man page.
    Linux desktop install.

5. GNU autotools build package.

Limitations: a last-minute issue arose while linking to libFLAC/libogg with the Mingwin compiler. Help will be appreciated to overcome the issue, apparently related to libogg code.

Hopefully this new version will be useful.

Best, Fab
