i recently picked up an ea-1 and was looking for an er-1 to use with it,
however, i've come across an emx for a nice price and am thinking about
unloading the ea-1 and just getting the emx. or maybe use the ea-1 and
emx together. any comments on the pros and cons of the ea/er pair vs the
emx? those darn ribbon solo clips on youtube are so seductive....

I personally think you get more bleep for the dough with the er-1,
ea-1 combo than with the emx-1.  all the drum sounds on the er-1 are
truly analog, but the cymbals and crash are digital whereas the emx
only offers emulations of electronic drums.   So I guess it depends on
what you want. Bottom line is that if you ever found the need for
acoustic sounding drums then the emx-1 would come out ahead for you.
Oh, and you also get some preset chords from various synth, piano,
organs to play with in the emx.  I don't think you can get the wild
bloops and bleeps you can get from an er1 with the drums on the emx
though.  YMMV.

nothing about the er-1 is analog, except the outputs.

the drums on the EMX are samples. the synth sounds are VA.

Someone just said the ER-1 sounds are 'truly analog' -- not true, it's VA.

Still, a good machine, and the best drum sequencer you can find for $100 used!

Yeah this is kinda what I was referring to in my post.  I know all the
electribes are VA, just that the drums in the emx  are sampled, as are
the cymbals and crash in the er1.  I guess what I was trying to say is
that the sampled drum sounds are fixed and aren't as tweak-able as
those on the er1. That said, I guess one *could* use the VA synth on
the emx to creat some of the bleeps the er-1 can do.

yes indeed. it's a shame that the drum instruments on the EMX don't
have the same tweakage options that the synth ones do - no filter,
for a start. that's one reason why the ESX is more popular, as all
the instruments are orthogonal. ESX == candidate for best piece of
gear ever made, IMHO.

one caveat about all 'tribes - the synth sections are all mono (the
chord osc on the EMX notwithstaning). if there is to be another
'tribe, then a poly VA instrument would be rad.

I actually prefer the EMX to the ESX, I got the EMX first, then the ESX but ended up selling the ESX because I found it a bit limiting with only 2 pitched parts. The EMX is also a very capable "techno secret weapon" and is used by some notable Detroit artists including Octave One amongst others, but a lot of people dismiss it as a cheezy trance box due to (no doubt) the presets. But its actually a very elegant machine to use and you can get some surprising complex tones from it, the drums are actually quite good and with the modulation and motion sequencer can get quite interesting, for example using pitch sweeps etc. Also you can create some nice drum and percussion sounds using the synth parts, I once used the unison oscillator to create some nice 808 type hi hats.

But as has been said many times on this list before, any of the electribes make a worthy addition to a studio, once you delete all the presets and delve into them they can be full of suprises and very inspiring to use.
