debian package

How do I use the em8300 debian package?  There's no kernel module in it,
just em8300setup, a couple of configuration files, and some
documentation.  How do I get the kernel module?  I could compile it
myself, but in that case, what's the point of this binary package?

Thanks

Hi,

You will have to compile the module yourself, which is often (and
unfortunately) a consequence of using out-of-tree kernel modules. However the
em8300 set of packages make this a reasonably automated and Debian-integrated
process.

The package you want for the modules source is em8300-source. Once you apt-get
install em8300-source you can use module-assistant (or you favourite
alternative method) to generate an em8300-modules package suitable for your
kernel and architecture (read /usr/share/doc/em8300-source/README.Debian for
instructions).

Hope that helps clear things up,
Brendon

A belated thank you for pointing me towards module-assistant.  I
eventually decided to stay with Fedora rather than switching to Ubuntu,
so that I don't have to recompile when the kernel gets upgraded.

Is there something that prevents the creation of binary kernel module
packages for Debian like the ones livna distributes for Fedora?
