Sounds rather confusing TBH. I tend to think that having end-to-end
instructions seperately for each installation method makes more sense,
even though it means having considerable redundancy...

(The redundancy could be reduced though by factoring out common parts
into seperate sections.)

Rewriting the installation instructions

Hi,

I think it's time to for a major overhaul of the existing installation
instructions. The reason is, I believe, a fragementation of methods
used to install Debian GNU/Hurd.

To that end, I propose to partition the instructions in five independent
parts:

1. Preparation of the host system

2. Installation of the base system from the host system

3. Boot setup

4. Booting/running the Hurd

5. Native-install/post-install

ad 1.

- Dom0 setup for Xen
- qemu installation
- qemu grub disk image download/installation
- nothing in case of native booting

ad 2.

- K* CD
- crosshurd from either GNU/Linux or GNU/Hurd
- base tarball extraction
- debootstrap from either GNU/Linux or GNU/Hurd
- nothing (in case of using the qemu image)

ad 3.

- Grub setup for native booting
- Grub setup for qemu booting without a Grub boot image
- Xen hurd modules/gnumach-xen installation
- nothing (in case of Qemu with Grub boot image)

ad 4.

- Qemu
- Xen
- nothing (in case of native booting)

ad 5.

- native-install
- nothing (in case of Qemu image)
- nothing (in case of debootstrap)

is that about right? Maybe 1, 3 and 4 can be dealt with together for
Xen/Qemu/native. Once we settled on the above, somebody could flesh
everything out using the existing documentation, maybe using a temporary
or new area in the wiki.

I have used the anonftpsync-ports configuration/script to make a
Debian GNU/Hurd mirror. For your reference:

http://www.bddebian.com/~wiki/hurd/running/creating_image_tarball/

Replace the "TO=/home/foo/rsync-debian-ports" to your desired
location, and run the script as:

sudo sh anonftpsync-ports

It occupies about 12G of disk space.

Debian GNU Hurd .iso building HOWTO

Hi,

I need help in creating Debian GNU Hurd .iso CDs. I have been able to
get the pool-hurd-i386 packages using:

rsync -rv rsync.debian-ports.org::debian/pool-hurd-i386/ pool-hurd-i386

Is this sufficient? In local_fs.h (from
http://www.copyleft.co.nz/tarball-scripts.tgz) there seems to be a use
of dists/sid/. So we need to obtain dists/ also from
http://rsync.debian-ports.org/?

In CONF.sh, MIRROR and LMIRROR (local mirror) are refering to the same
directory. Why is it so?

This Hurd documentation build uses ftp-gnuab and is a bit old?

links and links2 work perfectly on Debian GNU/Hurd, i just tried links2 -g and it
gave worked with http as well as https with no problem, here's an entry from my
access.log:

"Links (2.2; GNU 0.3 i686-AT386; x)"

elinks is a different source than links and links2.

It isn't finished (that means: In a state to be released), because there are
still some missing pieces.

For example it doesn't yet have a sound device, and it isn't trivial to run X
on it.

But it can already be used as production system - as long as you don't need
the missing pieces. And the core functionality works (translators). Please
keep up-to-date backups, though.

Uh, why? It's not like they are so critical that they must work when

I am in the process of packaging ELinks 0.12pre1 for unstable, soon
afterwhich, I will package snapshots of 0.13 for experimental. I will
update the version in unstable per official ELinks 0.12 releases, so
hopefully one of those will make it usable on GNU/Hurd.

It just changes the host naming scheme. config.status was not recognizing the old scheme.

just changes the build directory, so that it is harmless?
