Justification: FTBFS on i386

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in a lenny chroot, your package failed
to build on i386.

Relevant part:

> ** Using build dependencies supplied by package:
> Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 4.1.0), bzip2, quilt, freebsd6-buildutils (>= 6.2) [kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64] | freebsd7-buildutils [kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64], libdb4.4-dev | libdb-dev, flex-old | flex, libbsd-dev [kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64], gcc-4.3 [kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64], sharutils
> Checking for already installed source dependencies...
> debhelper: missing
> Using default version 7.0.15
> bzip2: already installed (1.0.5-1)
> quilt: missing
> flex: missing
> sharutils: missing
> Checking for source dependency conflicts...
> Reading package lists...
> Building dependency tree...
> Reading state information...
> Package libdb4.4-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
> This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
> is only available from another source
> E: Package libdb4.4-dev has no installation candidate

The full build log is available from:
   http://newpeople.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2008/10/06

It is possible that your package builds fine in sid, but you should make sure
that your package also builds fine in lenny before the release.

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at
http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS . You're welcome to contribute!

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.
[...]
>> Can you please try to sync the package of Blender in Debian
>> GNU/KFreeBSD with that in Debian GNU/Linux?
>
> I'm currently waiting for 2.48 to be released (due since some days), and
> I'll package it for experimental, including an updated GNU/kFreeBSD
> patch.

Great!

>> I describe here what I modified to advance from the configuration
>> error to the compilation error (I am referring to Blender package
>> 2.46+dfsg-4).
>
> Thank you for that.
>
> BTW, usually one uses "diff -u" which provides with an even nicer
> output. ;-)

Sorry.
I now attouch the diffs created using "diff -u" (from inside
"debian/patches/" path).

Thanks.

Hi Luca,

(cc-ing you since I'm not sure you're on the list, sorry for a possible
duplicate.)

Luca Favatella <slackydeb@...> (06/10/2008):
> (I CCed the blender package mantainer. I hope it is not a mistake.)

not at all. Anyway, I happen to read this list as well. :-)

> I installed the version of Blender in Debian repositories.
> The Blender package in Debian GNU/KFreeBSD is out of sync with the
> GNU/Linux version, as showed at [Blender Debian unstable] (2.45 vs.
> 2.46).

Yes, sorry for that.

> Starting the Game Engine (pressing P) crashes the version of Blender
> in Debian GNU/KFreeBSD; instead it doesn't crash that in Debian
> GNU/Linux (I tried it on a Debian GNU/Linux x86 32 bit computer).

I'll try and reproduce that as soon as I get back a direct access to my
GNU/kFreeBSD box.

> The problem was that the GNU/KFreeBSD support patch had been disabled
> because needing updating, as you can read from [Blender package
> changelog]. I report here the interesting part.
> * debian/patches/10_gnukfreebsd_support:
> - Disable it, needs update.
>
> I updated the patch.

Yes, it needed some work, and real life ate all my time until recently,
that's still on my todolist, though.

> The reason of the build failure was this (as you can read from
> [Blender package changelog]). I report here the interesting part.
> * Use the system-wide FTGL library instead of the embedded one
>
> But the compilation fails almost at the end, and I don't understand
> why... Here is the last part of the build log:
> Linking program ==> 'blender'
> build/linux2/lib/libblender_creator.a(creator.o): In function `main':
> /home/user/debian/blender-2.46+dfsg/source/creator/creator.c:281:
> undefined reference to `zLhm65070058860608_br_init'
> collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

As I said, I'll look into it ASAP.

> Can you please try to sync the package of Blender in Debian
> GNU/KFreeBSD with that in Debian GNU/Linux?

I'm currently waiting for 2.48 to be released (due since some days), and
I'll package it for experimental, including an updated GNU/kFreeBSD
patch.

> I describe here what I modified to advance from the configuration
> error to the compilation error (I am referring to Blender package
> 2.46+dfsg-4).

Thank you for that.

BTW, usually one uses “diff -u” which provides with an even nicer
output. ;-)

Oh, and I'm really pleased someone at least uses Blender on GNU/kFreeBSD
and that my previous patches weren't totally useless. ;-)

Mraw,
KiBi.
with the version in Debian GNU/Linux.

I managed to reproduce the build log at [2.46 buildd kfreebsd-i386],
using "apt-get --build source blender". I report here the interesting

Bug-report to libufs2 concerning ufsutils on Debian GNU/Linux

I have found a portability issue between Linux and *BSD that prevented
mkfs.ufs from creating an UFS filesystem anywhere on a Linux box.
I have tried to use ufsutils and libufs2 packages from Debian Unstable
repository to create a UFS filesystem on different block devices and in
files and got the same result:

laptop:/home/dmitriy/ufsutils-7.0# mkfs.ufs /dev/ram0
mkfs.ufs: /dev/ram0: could not find special device

The root cause is connected with the function ufs_disk_fillout_blank() in
the file libufs/type.c that uses BSD-specific algorithm to resolve <name>
to a real character-device name:
1) Check if <name> points to a character device; if it does, it's what we
need
2) If it doesn't and doesn't begin with a '/' character, try prepending
'/dev/' to it and retrying
3) Resolve <name> to the device the filesystem on which the file <name>
is, and that device is what we need.

However, Linux can make a filesystem and mount it from a block device
only, so I needed to change the patch debian/patches/01_libufs.patch
(attached) to check it for a block device and also to eliminate resolving
a filename to the filesystem because I think it's not a good idea to
format a device a filesystem is mounted from.

The patched libufs2 succeeded with making a UFS2 filesystem on my 4MB
ramdisk:

laptop:/home/dmitriy/ufsutils-7.0# mkfs.ufs /dev/ram0
/dev/ram0: 4.0MB (8192 sectors) block size 16384, fragment size 2048
using 4 cylinder groups of 1.02MB, 65 blks, 192 inodes.
super-block backups (for fsck -b #) at:
  160, 2240, 4320, 6400

  - check and dump also work fine (attached), but I still can't mount it
(using linux-2.6.24.4 without any patches concerning UFS):

laptop:/home/dmitriy/ufsutils-7.0# mount -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/ram0
/mnt
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/ram0,
        missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
        dmesg | tail or so

laptop:/home/dmitriy/ufsutils-7.0# dmesg | tail
<skipped the lines not related to mounting my UFS>
UFS: failed to set blocksize

It still can mount an UFS image, for example, extracted from an
OpenSolaris LiveCD microroot, so I consider it to be mkfs.ufs problem, not
the kernel one.
So I attach:
1) The new patch to libufs (not the whole 01_libufs.patch
2) The output of dumpfs.ufs
3) The output of fsck.ufs
4) The gzipped image of the UFS I've created.
Please e-mail me if I forgot to attach anything of those :)

Best regards,
Dmitriy Kryuk
