We run clusters of about 15 webservers that are reloaded for new configs about
twenty times per day. This results in the following error about once
per day per cluster:

Not so. But this would mean that in many setups, any user would be
allowed to execute any root-owned program under the document root
that has mode +x as any _other_ user (above uid 100). This is
something that no admin would expect. The restriction that suexec can
only be executed by apache can often be circumvented. E.g. if user
are allowed to create php scripts in ~/public_html.

Currently I do
- chattr -i $file
- replace $file
- chattr +i $file
:-|

Fortunately though, one can still <Alias> stuff like PHP forum software
etc. in the users' domains in order to keep it in a central location, as
only the wrapper has the suexec limitations, but not what is called by
the wrapper.

As for the CGI scripts, you are right, keeping them in a central place
is not currently possible. :-(
What I/my control panel do is, there is a central location where these
scripts are stored, an the users' cgi-bins are updated from that
location. One however has to take precautions (e.g. in the form of cron
jobs) to update the users once the central repository gets updated.
This is a pity as otherwise the modfcgid/fastcgi+php variant works
pretty well and is pretty secure too.

Yes, I've looked at them. The problem is that libapache2-mod-fastcgi is
written in mind to be used together with suexec. The calling convention
usually is different for other programs like suphp.

I've tried that approach, and it is indeed fragile. Certainly when I
want the cgi script itself to be autogenerated by another script, which

I understand that. The patch is quite trivial though. Are there any

It's unfortunate I have to maintain this local patch. I know many people
have the same setup as me, and also have to patch suexec themselves.

The #ifndef/#endif preprocessor directives are useless.

If sockaddr_un struct is actually defined, only the compiler will know not
the preprocessor.

I found this because a patch I've created adds sys/un.h to the ap_config.h
includes because I'm working with UNIX domain sockets. This results in
sockaddr_un struct being defined. When trying to rebuild my apache packages
with my patch integrated, build fails here because of the redefinition of
sockaddr_un. My patch doesn't touch anything under contrib.

Why not simply include sys/un.h in mod_cgisock.c?

Please reply to me directly as I'm not subscribed to your list... This
address was found in dpkg -p apache output.

They are not duplicates as they are no longer in apache2.conf. You
have denied dpkg to update apache2.conf during ugrade and therefore
still have the old version.

That's not the reason, then.

It seems that the 127.0.0.0/8 subnet is handled specially. I can bind
to any address in that subnet without it being configured explicitly.
I don't know where this behaviour comes from and why it does not work
for you during boot. But I guess explicitly configuring the used ip
addresses is always a good idea.

I've now explicitly added the used ip addresses to the loopback interface:

I wonder why Apache is able to start without these explicitly added
addresses after boot has finished. What's the difference?

Bootlogd doesn't work here. I have the same symptoms like those
described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/upstart/+bug/98955
Even though i've enabled it in /etc/default/bootlogd the file

Normally on snapshot.debian.net, but this seems to be incomplete
lately. At least 2.6.25-1 is still at

http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2008/04/29/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/

and you can find some 2.6.24 versions there, too. You could also try
the 2.6.24 etchnhalf kernel that is in Debian etch and available on
all Debian mirrors.

You'll have to tell me where I can get older Debian kernels as I don't have anything older than 2.6.26-* in the /var/cache/apt/archives on that machine (or any other AMD64 Debian machine for that matter).
