after pam ldap ssh login takes 2 mins. to login

I finally got my pam_ldap install to authenticate against a Windows 2003 AD server.  The only problem is that it takes literally 2 1/2 mins. for a user to login to an ssh session.  The weird thing is even if I login as root which only has an account on the local computer it still takes 2 1/2 mins.  I really don't know what's going on.  my nsswitch is default except for the passwd, shadow, and group have this: compat ldap for each one.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
