a 100% guaranteed firewire interface for linux?Hi folks,
I need to buy a mobile áudio interface to give some linux áudio workshops here in Brazil. I saw some options listed "suported" in the ffado database, but also lots of forums with people saying they can't use that devices in their machines. So, I'm very afraid of buying something that won't work, and this interfaces here in Brazil are very very expensive... : ( Could you suggest me some interfaces that are guaranteed to work for me? I was especially thinking about the edirol fa-66. my laptop is a hp pavillion dv6700 with ubuntu 8.04 thanks a lot you all! surian _______________________________________________ Ardour-Users mailing list ardour-users@... http://lists.ardour.org/listinfo.cgi/ardour-users-ardour.org |

I have an FA-66 working perfectly with freebob (don't use ffado, it's not ready yet) under Mandriva 2008. I am using a desktop PC. I'm not sure if anything is guaranteed to work though, especially with a laptop. I would suggest you should take your laptop along and ask if you can try it. Most problems with laptops are because of: a) Firewire-controller sharing the interrupt with something else. Normally this shouldn't be a problem but with laptops you can (almost) never change the interrupts of the devices and are stuck with fw, graphics and usb sharing one interrupt if you have bad luck. If things are good its 'just' fw and wifi sharing... b) Bad fw controllers. Some ricoh chips are bad, some aren't. Somewhere on ffado.org there is or should be a list of good and bad controllers. BTW: I have a presonus firepod and that works great both with ffado and freebob. If you just need it to work, use freebob. And either take your laptop (with a working(?) install of freebob or ffado) to the dealer or if you are in germany or a country with similar laws, order online. Then its two weeks return without any fee, reasons or whatsoever. And at least thomann.de handles that (the 3-years warranty comes as a bonus). After a month or so log in as root and do a "rm -rf /". Or ask your administrator to do so... _______________________________________________ Ardour-Users mailing list ardour-users@... http://lists.ardour.org/listinfo.cgi/ardour-users-ardour.org |

Re: a 100% guaranteed firewire interface for linux?Hi folks,
Just to end this thread.. I bought an Edirol Fa-66 and, after installing a fresh ubuntu studio, it was almost plug and play! uhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!! Jack is stable using freebob with 4ms latency --- sample rate is 48kHz /// 64 frames/period /// 3 periods buffer My laptop is an HP Pavillion 6700 running ubuntu studio 8.04 with kernel 2.6.24-19-rt the firewire chipset is: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller The only thing I had to do was: # modprobe raw1394 and then change it's permission on /dev/raw1394 thanks for the answers! surian _______________________________________________ Ardour-Users mailing list ardour-users@... http://lists.ardour.org/listinfo.cgi/ardour-users-ardour.org |
