Zoomar for OM aka what'da think of this oddball

I have a snipe in for this one but couldn't find out too much about it.
Jeff dug up some info on the early Zoomars which were the very first
"zooms" created.  The origiinal  Killfitt designed lenses were
individuallly tested and film was not considered flat enough for
testing so glass plates were used.   The same guy developed the first
macro lens. This example must be of later vintage and probably very
well made. I wonder if anyone has an opinion  or info on this  zoomar.

I think I'd rather have a lens that produced a curved image field to fit
the film rather than a nice flat glass plate... they've been out of
style for a while.  :-)

Cool! Thanks for the heads up! I just set a higher snipe :) You're supposed
to brag after the fact! To many cut-throats lurking. Good luck, I couldn't
really do it now :)

As it happens, by chance, I got to handle a Zoomar this week. The
impossibly rare 180mm f1.3
Weight 15lb (7kg), filter size about 260mm, only about 30 ever made.
It's yours for just $8,500. With a hand made EOS mount. Happy to
broker the deal. :-)

That's the beast. Better pix here on Steve Gandy's site but no samples -
http://www.cameraquest.com/zoomar13.htm
Truly weird object. John's is in much better condition than that
Chinese one on the Contax.
It's in Melbourne - the owner of pro-photog store Camera Exchange,
one John Corneille has owned one for about ten years and it was
stolen around five years ago when the shop was broken into. He just
recovered it - someone put it on Aus, Ebay. The seller claimed that
he'd picked it up in a market for a couple of hundred, put it aside
thinking it might make an astronomy project and then years later
decided to sell. John bought it back at less than the ask of $400.
15lb? It felt like more than that. Seriously unwieldy, a real
monster. It's wearing an EOS adapter at present. John clams that it
is soft but then he is a large format lover and Leica dealer so he's
a bit obsessive. (He's the local Voigt. dealer too). He also claims
that it's not a true f1.3 - the physics are wrong. He suggests a
total production in a single run of around 30 units and that t didn't
really measure up to their specs. It is technically for sale at AU
$9,000 but I don't think he'd go through with it.

Sadly the one on sale on ebay is not of that breed... the lens that opens
the original thread is a voigtlander zoomar of Japanese origin. A fair
decent lens constructed probably by cosina when they bought german names
(they also produced exacta lenses... I own a wide angle zoom 18-28 on om
fit;; and the finish is the same). They were produced before mr Cosina
decided to relaunch the voigtländer brand with the Rs and the ltm lenses.

So a decent Japanese zoom with a exotic German name...

No one has mentioned the 4th of July celebrations.

Today marks the start of the biggest show on earth with fireworks and lots
of hoopla.

Probably not as important as the 5th.  US lawyers are always
encouraging their clients to take the 5th, aren't they?

Yeah, but I'm never quite sure where they're supposed to take it.
On holiday perhaps.
Or are they referring to a fifth of something - Scotch perhaps.
I'll take that tho' I prefer Irish.

Thank, guys.

Yep I thought it was of mij origin like the one CV  prime lens I own.
I wonder what Stephan thinks of his zoom which is likely of more
comparable vintage.
Somehow I think the yabe one would have trouble matching the
performance of the Tam 35-105/f2.8 and the zuiko 35-70/3.6 which has a
Gary Reese grade of B in the center even wide open.  Still, an
attractive novelty,

Anyway the real Zoomar 180/1.3 is a true monster.  The MTF curves on
the cameraquest site don't look that great assuming a usual scale on
the y axis which is difficult to read.  Would be fun to use one but not
quite 8K fun.

I thought that we had agreed that they don't take holidays.

Whereas we lazy Europeans are on holiday virtually the whole year
round ...
