Wyse wt9455xl as a Thinstation running rdesktop nxclient and local firefox with Flash and Java and network printing support?Dear list,
We have been running Thinstation on Dell Optiplexes (mostly g1 some gx1's ) in our primary school. We boot using tftp. Right now, we use rdesktop with sound support connectong to a single Win 203 terminal server. This is working well, but we need more machines and Dell Optiplex g1's and gx1 's are becoming harder to find Most machines that refubishers are offering are pentium 4 2.6 Ghz wich consume too much power. We probably don't need that much processing power either. So in an effort to limit the different hardware to maintain, we got an interesting offer from one of our refubishing companies: wyse wt9455xl (Thin client terminal). I't supposed to have 256 mb ram. This probably makes it possible to add some exiting new options to our Thinstations like: Firefox local + flash + java + network printing support nxclient to connect to our Linux Terminal Server (and offcourse rdesktop + sound support still). The question is: are these powerfull enough and what video driver and sound driver will they have. I have searched the net and gathered this info sofar, but this info doen't include the exact chips for video and audio: Memory 256 MB Flash / 256 MB Ram I/O Peripheral Support One Serial Port. Four USB 2.0 Ports (2 Front, 2 Back) Two PS/2 Port VGA Type Video Output (DB-15) Enhanced PS/2 keyboard with Windows keys PS/2 mouse included. Networking 10/100 Base-T Fast Ethernet twisted pair (RJ-45) Display Support VESA monitor support with Display Data Control (DDC) for automatic setting of resolution and refresh rate. 16-bit/64K colors up to: 1600 x 1200 @ 60Hz 24-bit/16.7M colors up to: 1024 x 768 @ 85Hz Audio Output: 1/8-inch mini jack, 16-bit stereo, 48KHz sample rate The interesting bit is the flash memory they obviously boot from; is it feasible to put Thinstation on flash memory? Will this flash memory be as reliable as booting from tftp and does this unit support tftp just in case? I appreciate any pointers you may have. So if you have any experience with Thinstation on this specific hardware, please reply to the list. Re: Wyse wt9455xl as a Thinstation running rdesktop nxclient and local firefox with Flash and Java and network printing support? The Wyse terminal are either based on VIA Epias or AMD Geodes. From
the video ranges you quote, I'm fairly sure it is Epias, which is nothing short of perfect for TS. Booting off the flash is WAY faster than the network booting.
