>>> Workrave does not allow you to configure these window hints. When you
>>> activate the Workrave applet, Workave requests to be removed from the
>>> window list (alt-tab) and window list (pager).
>>
>> Does Workrave 1.8.5 make this request? Because the main Workrave
>> window certainly shows up in my window list (i.e., what I get with
>> Alt-Tab) and my pager.
>
> It seems I was mistaken.. Workrave only removes the break windows from the
> windows list and pager.
>
>> I'd like to have the Workrave main window be on top (I've done this
>> via my window manager) and not show up otherwise in the window list or
>> pager. Is there any way to accomplish this?
>
> Yes, Either by instructing you window manager to do so, or by changing
> Workrave (except for the always on top, which can be configured)

I'll file a enhancement/bug report for having the main window not show
up in the window list or pager. But maybe only when “always on top”
is selected? Maybe also need to not do this when iconified? Does
this make sense?

Hi,

> Sounds very cool! Is there any documentation or help text?

Nope...

> Also, is there any documentation of the D-Bus interface other than the
> contents of workrave/trunk/backend/src/workrave-service.xml?

Nope...

> Also (and this question is addressed to everyone, not just the
> developers), has anyone written a script to control Workrave settings
> via D-Bus based on time of day and day of week? For example, I would
> like to suspend rest breaks (but not micro breaks) during 07:15/08:00
> every day. Is something like that possible?

You could write a python script that uses the org.workrave.ConfigInterface
interface to set the 'breaks/rest_break/enabled' setting to true/false
depending on the time.

> So instead, to determine which packages I need, I should go find the
> corresponding official Debian package, right?

Yes.

> What things in Workrave depend on later D-Bus versions? I'm facing

Good question. I really don't know. I never tested anything < 1.0

>> You could remove all code that used the status icon... It's quite isolated.
>
> Which file is this in? And which gtkmm function is the one that
> requires 2.10 (that will give me a better hint where to start)? (I
> would add a configure option to omit the relevant functionality. (Or
> I need to figure out how to build by hand the recent-enough gtkmm and
> all its dependencies.))

The Gtk::StatusIcon class is not available in < 2.10

In directory frontend/gtkmm/src:

GUI.cc, GUI.hh: comment out references to StatusIcon and status_icon
Makefile.am: Remove StatusIcon.cc

Feel free to submit a patch that leaves out the statusicon if gtkmm version <
>>> Now I have some time again, I looked in the SVN of WorkRave for the
>>> example. But I can only find a script for setup/installation.
>>
>> Maybe Rob is referring to workrave/trunk/backend/src/facedetect.py?
>> I'm not quite sure what this does, but it begins with this comment:
>>
>> Workrave Activity Monitor based on face detection
>
> Correct. This script used OpenCV to perform face detection. As long as your
> face is detected, Workrave assumes you are active. Useful when you are not
> using keyboard/mouse (e.g. because you reading documentation on your computer)

Sounds very cool! Is there any documentation or help text?

Also, is there any documentation of the D-Bus interface other than the
contents of workrave/trunk/backend/src/workrave-service.xml?

Also (and this question is addressed to everyone, not just the
developers), has anyone written a script to control Workrave settings
via D-Bus based on time of day and day of week? For example, I would
like to suspend rest breaks (but not micro breaks) during 07:15/08:00
every day. Is something like that possible?

>>> What versions of dbus are you using? Could you mail me (directly) config.log?
>
> 0.60 is probably too old...

What things in Workrave depend on later D-Bus versions? I'm facing
the choice of completely leaving out D-Bus support, patching out the
>> Which docs?
>
> The gtkmm documentation say that a function used by Workrave requires 2.10
>
>> Is there any way to build without this feature of libgtkmm? Otherwise
>> I appear to have no way to use Workrave 1.9.0 and will have to stay at
>> 1.8.5.
>

Hoi,

>

>> Now I have some time again, I looked in the SVN of WorkRave for the
>
> Maybe Rob is referring to workrave/trunk/backend/src/facedetect.py?
> I don't know.
>
> We try to achieve a good balance between keeping the user interface
> (especially the preferences) simple and understandable while on the
> other hand giving the user enough freedom to tweak Workrave's
> behavior.
> Comments?

I agree with the original poster, and the filer of bug #416. I have
added comments to bug 416 and voted for it.

I don't think the user interface would be any more difficult if
enabling the postpone and skip buttons was on a per-button basis. It
is just as difficult an interface to have a single choice for both
buttons. The main problem is the user does not have enough
information to know which choice to make. The main difficulty with
this part of the user interface is the lack of help text explaining
how the skip and postpone buttons work in practice.

I also think the effectiveness of the postponement option would be
greater if postponement got steadily more difficult each time it was
used. Postponement should really only be for emergencies (e.g., your
boss is on the telephone and needs something now), but right now it is
too easy to slip into a routine of simply postponing a break.
>>> At the moment I am planning to make some small scripts around the
>>> current status of work-rave.
>>> My questin is, where can I find the current status of WorkRave? The
>>> current status file does not contain info of whether or not the user
>>
>> On windows this is not yet possible. On Linux, you can use DBUS to subsctibe
>> shows how to do this.

Maybe Rob is referring to workrave/trunk/backend/src/facedetect.py?
I'm not quite sure what this does, but it begins with this comment:

Hello,
I managed to build Workrave for Linux on Ubuntu after
getting some help from Daniel Nylander.

I still haven't been able to build Workrave for Windows
though. I am primarily a Windows user and I would like to
customize Workrave a little bit for my use.

I followed the instructions in the build/README file and
managed to get through all steps in the build/build-cross.sh
script after changing version on some packages. I got stuck
in the build/build-packages.sh script. First I ran into a
problem of having a too late version of texinfo that was
detected as a very old version that I managed to workaround
by hacking some files and downloading later versions of some
libraries. But I never managed to run build-packages.sh
without compiler/linker errors. If I remember correctly it
was glibmm that failed to build.

Do you know a linux distrubution/version where
cross-compiling of Workrave for Windows works more or less
out of the box?

Regards,
Örjan
Subject: Re: [Workrave-user] What linux distribution to use
when building workrave?

Hello,

> Can you recommend a particular linux distribution and
version that is
> suitable for building Workrave on?

We (the developers) run debian and ubuntu. But any other
distribution should work fine.

> I tried to build Workrave on Ubuntu 8.04.1
(2.6.24-19-generic) but I
> got stuck very early. When trying to run build-cross.sh I
got the
> error message "checking whether the C compiler (gcc )
works... no)"

build-cross is for building the windows version using cross
compilers on linux. You probably don't have the correct
cross compilers installed. Try autogen.sh

> If there is a linux distribution that you know that the
build scripts
> work on without problems I would like to that distribution
instead of
> Ubuntu 8.04.1. I have a spare computer where I have my
linux
> installation and I will not use it for anything else than
building Workrave.

How about apt-get install workrave?

Any distribution should work if the right packages are
installed (autoconf.
automake, gtk+ gtkmm, glib, ....)

Groetjes,
   Rob
>
>> Running intltoolize...
>> Running libtoolize...
>> You should add the contents of `/usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4' to `aclocal.m4'.
>> Running aclocal ...
>> aclocal: macro `AM_PROG_MKDIR_P' required but not defined
>
> Try automake 1.10

Hmm. This is not one of the package options in Ubuntu Dapper Drake.
The available packages are: automake1.4, automake1.5, automake1.6,
automake1.7, automake1.8, automake1.9. So I would have to install it
by hand.

It is worth pointing out that automake1.7 is the one that was pulled
in by the Build-Depends debian/control line. So that needs to be more
specific.

> > checking for gdome-config... no
> > configure: error: Need GDome2
>
> Workrave can use gconf (gnome) or xml for storing all configuration. You haver
> gconf, try "--disable-xml" or install gdome2

I think the only problem here is that libgdome2-dev is not in the
Build-Depends.

> > Checking for gdome-config... /usr/bin/gdome-config
> > /usr/bin/gdome-config: line 86: --libs: command not found
> > /usr/bin/gdome-config: line 87: --cflags: command not found
>
> Stange... Perhaps a shell issue. Could you try 'bash ./configure <options>"

I'm ignoring these errors which are emitted by gdome-config because
the stdout appears to be correct. These errors are what shows up on
stderr when you run “gdome-config --libs” and “gdome-config --cflags”.

> > checking for GSTREAMER... no
>
> Gstreamer is optional, but recommended.

I'm building without it for now. Actually, I went back to 1.8.5 and
succeeded in building it. Workrave 1.8.5 appears to not use GStreamer
(or at least gives no error messages).

> > I'm guessing Workrave wants libgstreamer0.10-dev.
>
> Probably yes. I need to update the minimum supported version of all
> dependencies...

Unfortunately, libgstreamer0.10-dev (which is GStreamer 0.10.6 on my
machine) was not sufficient to yield a happy compilation.

> > Which package do I need for this? “dpkg --list '*dbus*dev*'” tells me
> > these are the relevant packages:
>
> > libdbus-1-dev (Already installed!)
>
> You also need one these:
>
> > libdbus-glib-1-dev
> > libdbus-glib-dev

As mentioned, I installed one of them ...

> > Help? What package do I need to convince configure that I have D-Bus?
>
> What versions of dbus are you using? Could you mail me (directly) config.log?

I've got these D-Bus related package versions installed:

  dbus 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  dbus-1-utils 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  libdbus-1-2 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  libdbus-1-dev 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  libdbus-glib-1-2 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  libdbus-glib-1-dev 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  libdbus-qt-1-1c2 0.60-6ubuntu8.1
  python2.4-dbus 0.60-6ubuntu8.1

I've attached below the result of “./configure --enable-dbus” in
Workrave 1.9.0. (I'm now using 1.8.5, which I was able to build.)

Hmm. It looks from config.log like it is actually finding D-Bus, but
it is older than it wants. Another item to add to Build-Depends.

>  >  GstSoundPlayer.cc: In constructor ‘GstSoundPlayer::GstSoundPlayer()’:
> > GstSoundPlayer.cc:51: error: ‘gst_registry_fork_set_enabled’ was not declared in this scope
>
> Your gstreamer may be too old. Feel free to comment this line out. Workrave
> will work without.

Thanks, that is useful information.

> > In file included from GUI.cc:64:
> > StatusIcon.hh:30:30: error: gtkmm/statusicon.h: No such file or directory
>
> I guess Workrave needs a more recent gtkmm....

I've got these packages installed:

  libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a 2.8.8-0ubuntu1
  libgtkmm-2.4-dev 2.8.8-0ubuntu1

> The docs say at least 2.10

Which docs?

Anyway, another item for the Build-Depends.

Is there any way to build without this feature of libgtkmm? Otherwise
I appear to have no way to use Workrave 1.9.0 and will have to stay at
1.8.5.

Thanks for your detailed replies!

I will answer you mails in one reply...
> Running libtoolize...
> You should add the contents of `/usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4' to `aclocal.m4'.
> configure: error: Need GDome2

Workrave can use gconf (gnome) or xml for storing all configuration. You haver
gconf, try "--disable-xml" or install gdome2

> Checking for gdome-config... /usr/bin/gdome-config

Gstreamer is optional, but recommended.

> I'm guessing Workrave wants libgstreamer0.10-dev.

Probably yes. I need to update the minimum supported version of all
dependencies...

> Which package do I need for this? “dpkg --list '*dbus*dev*'” tells me
> these are the relevant packages:

> libdbus-1-dev (Already installed!)

You also need one these:

> libdbus-glib-1-dev
> libdbus-glib-dev

> Help? What package do I need to convince configure that I have D-Bus?

What versions of dbus are you using? Could you mail me (directly) config.log?

Your gstreamer may be too old. Feel free to comment this line out. Workrave
will work without.

I guess Workrave needs a more recent gtkmm....

The docs say at least 2.10
>>
>>> When I run “./configure” in the unpacked directory of
>>> workrave-1.9.0-3.tar.gz,
> [...]
> Yes, configure completes! But wait, it tells me “DBUS support : no”.
> But I want D-bus support, so I can script Workrave.
>
> Which package do I need for this? “dpkg --list '*dbus*dev*'” tells me
> these are the relevant packages:
>
> dbus-1-dev
> dbus-glib-1-dev
> dbus-qt-1-dev
> libdbus-1-dev (Already installed!)
> libdbus-glib-1-dev
> libdbus-glib-dev
> libdbus-glib0-dev
> libdbus-qt-1-dev
> libdbus0-dev
>
> I'm guessing I don't want anything that has “dbus0” in its name. But
> which package do I need? I already have “libdbus-1-dev” and that is
> not making configure happy.

I'm assuming I should not need anything with “qt” in the name, because
I am not trying to build with KDE support.

The package dbus-1-dev and libdbus0-dev say they are obsoleted by
libdbus-1-dev, which I already have installed.

The package libdbus-glib0-dev says it is obsoleted by
libdbus-glib-1-dev (which I just now installed, see below).

The packages dbus-glib-1-dev and libdbus-glib-dev do not actually
exist (and are listed by dpkg only because some other packages
erroneously refer to them).

I have now installed libdbus-glib-1-dev, and “./configure
--enable-dbus” fails with these error lines:

  checking for DBUS... no
  configure: error: Couldn't find d-bus.

Help? What package do I need to convince configure that I have D-Bus?

>>> I'm running Ubuntu Dapper Drake with all updates applied. I've run
>>> are installed. All packages listed in the “Build-Depends” line of
>>> debian/control in the latest Workrave Subversion files are installed.
>
> ----------------------------------------------------------------------
[...]
> So it looks like another missing dependency on some gstreamer-related
> package. I'll work on figuring this out tomorrow. If someone wants
> to tell me in the meantime, that would be great ...

Okay, so I've found some more time to try to work this out. “dpkg
--list '*gstream*dev*' tells me these are the possible packages (and
  libgstreamer0.10-dev
  libgstreamer0.8-dev

I'm guessing Workrave wants libgstreamer0.10-dev.

Okay, let's run “apt-get install libgstreamer0.10-dev” and try again.
