Having used WingIDE for some time, I feel that most painful area for
etc). I hate the current project browser with those deeply nested
trees (I have complicated projects with many directories spawning many
libraries).

I am not sure how to solve this perfectly, but would like to suggest
the following:

1. Do *something* to let me open the project file by partial name without
navigating to it through the directory tree. So I could press some
shortcut, type a few letters and get the autocompleted list of the
matching project files, wherever in the project tree they are. It
could be implemented in a few ways:

   (A)

   - I press (say) C-x o (or F9 or whatever)

   - WingIDE displays input box on the bottom of the window (just like
it does after C-x f in emacs mode, but with different prompt and
     behaviour)

   - I type a few letters and press Tab

   - WingIDE popups autocompleted list (similar to one shown after C-x
f), this list contains all project files which match the given name
(if I typed __in it should show all __init__.py files for example),
the list should use some "reverse path" convention
     (emacs-like __init__.py<a/lib>, __init__.py<b/lib>
where just enough is shown to distinguish between files is worth
      consideration)

   (B) There is "file search" box on the top of the project panel. One
can click it, enter partial name, click enter and get the
matching files below. There are also keyboard shortcuts, so one
     can:

     - press some shortcut to jump to this file search box
     - type a few letters and press Enter,
     - press Tab to jump to the files list,
     - navigate with keyboard arrows and pick the file with Enter

2. Improve C-x f so it works as in Emacs. In particular:

   - if I type C-x f and then ~ I should reset the file search box
to my home directory (some single-letter shortcut which would
reset it to project root would also be nice, maybe # ?)

{ if it was unclear: in emacs, when I type
           C-x f ~ pTab
I get list of $HOME/p* files and directories - wherever
I was before pressing ~ and whatever was shown)

   - make the autocompletion popup bigger and/or multicolumn, so I usually
see all the matches instead of just first 4 (Emacs uses half of the
     window and multicolumn display)

   - make Alt-Backspace (eat last directory from the current path) work

3. Improve C-x b so it works as in Emacs. In particular:

   - if I press
           C-x b Tab
I should see the list of all files which are currently open

   - as above, the autocompletion popup should be big enough to show
     everything

4. Make recent files available via shortcut and suitable for autocompletion
(not really necessary if 1 is implemented)

5. (advanced topic) Consider grabbing some information about my usage habits,
for example if I repeatably happen to always open blahblah.py while
having trahtrah.py open Wing should make this file easier to find
("Related files" panel or so). Eclipse Mylyn is not exactly that,
   but has some similar concepts.

--
----------------------------------------------------------------------
| Marcin Kasperski | 1 woman, 9 months = one baby. But we have
>>>> I assume this is a bug?
>>>
>>> Were the files saved before running the test? Every set of tests
>>> run uses one (or more) processes, so it's not a case of reloading
> Could you provide a test case?

I think I've worked out what happened. When I press 'Run Tests' in the
testing tool it doesn't run all the test files, but seems to pick an
(apparently) arbitrary subset - so all the preexisting failures (that
I've now fixed) then still show as red after the test run. Repeatedly
pressing run tests doesn't change anything.

If I go and select the file that hasn't run and then hit run tests, it
runs fine. Very confusing I'm afraid.

> Hi,
>
> If it's a tab-indented file that suddenly shows the file with tab size
> of 8, it's due to adding indentation that includes also spaces (perhaps
> by pasting it in). Wing does that because that is how the Python
> interpreter is going to "see" the file.
>
> In Wing Pro, you can use the Indentation tool to see what sort of mix
> of tab, tab+space, and space only indents you have.
>
> On a related note: If you get indentation warning dialogs that you
> don't want, you can disable that with the Editor / Indentation / Show
> Python Indent Warning Dialog preference.
>
> Hope that helps. If it's changing to tab size 8 without mixed indents
> in the file or this isn't a tab-only indented file, please send details
>> Is it possible to configure wing to autocomplete words that aren't
>> necessarily defined variables, functions or methods.
>> I'm from Emacs/Jed land where M-. autocompletes the word you're cursor
>> is on if the word has been written anywhere before in the buffer.
>>
>> I often find that I'm typing words that have been written before in
>> things like comments or inside python strings. In fact I'd be happy to
>> separate the functionality from the usual autocomplete which pops up
>> as a list.
>>
>
> There's not way to do this now in Python code, but it's an option we've been
> looking at
> adding. The completer for non-Python code already does this (although it
> separates out
> words by context -- code vs comment vs string vs template tags). So it may
> not be a
> stretch to drive completion w/in comments and strings at least using the
> same code.
> I'll try to look at this; it's something I've been wanting also but haven't
> had time to
> work on yet.
>

I'm realizing more and more how great Wing is but I'm also realizing
how much I miss the autocomplete.
How about a custom plugin script that I can bind to a keyboard command
that takes as a parameter the word the cursor is at and the whole
buffer as a string?
I'm happy to get my hands dirty if I can get some assistance.
> Thanks for your quick answer. I'll follow your advice.

Actually, owing to the other problems with that new 2.3.2, I
downgraded to 2.3.1. But before doing so, I check that xdpyinfo
reports 96 dpi. I would then think that, indeed, GTK/pango would
adjust but that's not the case.

If it's changing to tab size 8 without mixed indents
in the file or this isn't a tab-only indented file, please send details
to us at support@....
> CTRL+arrow key to stop the indenting stuff on the definition line, but
> it doesn't work for the docstring. Instead I either jump to the
>
> I use my keyboard as much as possible, so grabbing the mouse and
> positioning is slightly annoying, especially if my cursor is on my
> secondary monitor. Not a big deal, but I was wondering if there is a
> way to turn off this feature? I am using Wing Pro 3.1.5-1, Python 2.5.2.

You should be able to use the Tab key to move among the fields of the
templates, rather than the arrow keys.
I think I agree, however, that indent/dedent should be ctrl-arrows
rather than arrows. The rationale for
the current behavior was that people won't tend to find the
functionality if it's ctrl-arrows, but it's not hard
in most cases to get the template to be placed right in the first place.
> I often find that I'm typing words that have been written before in
>

There's not way to do this now in Python code, but it's an option we've
been looking at
adding. The completer for non-Python code already does this (although
it separates out
may not be a
stretch to drive completion w/in comments and strings at least using the
I'll try to look at this; it's something I've been wanting also but

> the latest release of the X11 system for MacOS, 2.3.2 rc1, sets the
> default resolution to 96 dpi. As a result, the text in WingIDE becomes
> far too big. I have been using Luxi Mono 11 pt for the Python code and
> the actual text size on the screen corresponded roughly to 11 pt in
> native applications. However with that new version of X11, I need to use
> 8 pt to get the same actual size on the screen. I am sure this is a dpi
> problem because if I start the XServer with -dpi 72, text size gets back
> to what it used to be.
>
> Is there anything Wing-specific which could explain that bad behaviour?
> Has anybody any suggestions as to what to do?

I think starting with -dpi 72 is the best option right now. GTK (or pango)
should be detecting the dpi and adjusting font sizes, I believe, but it is
apparently failing to do so. We'll have to track down whether this is
another bug in X11 2.3.2rc1 (e.g. failure to report correct resolution)
or a bug in our version of GTK/pango.

Thanks for reporting this.
