Starting from yesterday, all my Windows XP sp2 machines asking an update to SP3.
Anybody has tried the windows xp SP3 for PIC development, such as MPLAB IDE, PICKit2, ICD2, etc?
So far the Windows XP sp2 provide very good software compatibility and stability.

We all are waiting for someone that test SP3 and also MPLAB 8.10 ;-)
If you have done all security update you dont need SP3 immediately...
and if you use your pc for work... wait!

Try one machine and let us know the result. I bet it will be ok. It is not
as drastic as Windows SP2.

Vista SP1 is painless from my experience. The Vista computer is now
getting more stable and my wife is happy with it.

So far I can't get it to install. I was reinstalling XP on my laptop over
the weekend & started doing the updates on Monday. There were 100 updates at
that time. I left it installing them & went to bed. The next day I got a
failure message & explorer would not start when I re-booted rendering the
system useless. I repaired the XP installation, but now could not access USB
memory sticks. Retried the updates, & now it seems to have consolidated them
all into SP3. Running the SP3 package, the PC freezes while trying to do a
cleanup after install.

I'm trying the SP3 install again later, but I'd say I'll have to start again
with a fresh XP install. I'll keep you posted....

I may revert to an abacus or maybe a slide rule.

Once I was trying to undo an update on XP - it was a complete mess
afterwards, so since then I am reinstalling if needed to step back (or use
Ghost to put the previous image back).

XP SP3 does not allow you to run IE6.
IE7 is installed as part of SP3 and cannot be removed
without uninstalling SP3.

About 70% of web users run IE6 according to this.

I am happy with the advantages of IE7 fwiw. (Most notably
tabbed browsing). I am not aware of why users do not wish to
upgrade but no doubt there are some good reasons.

ALSO if you have installed IE8 Beta 1 you will not be
offered SP3 automatically.
SP3 / IE* b1 are said to presently be incompatible.

I guess you mean :-
""SP3 / IE8 B1 are said to presently be incompatible."

FWIW Ive just switched to Firefox 3 & found it pretty good also. I
certainly prefer it to the untabbed browsing of IE6.

Old scope, new scope, stand alone, pc-based scope...

by piclist-7 :: Rate this Message:

So I am trying to pack my car for a cross-country move to Berkeley, CA.

Every square inch I can spare will make this easier, so I am pondering my
big 1009mhz 5 channel scope.  I love it, but it is taking up a lot of
space, and I don't trust UPS to deliver it.  Plus it will cost more to
ship than I paid for the thing.

I was pondering leaving it, and buying a PC-based one once I was settled
in, thinking they would be cheaper.. but I see prices around $400 or so
for the low level stuff and thats way too much.

So... is there a nice $100 pc-based scope, or think I can replace mine for
about that price in Berkeley?  Or should I bring it?  I hate the idea of
buying something I own, even if it IS cheaper than trying to move it.

I wish I could just ship my entire hobby out there, but too much of it is
delicate and easily breakable and I have had too many packages trashed by
UPS, not to mention movers.  (Last time I used movers they lost my bicycle
and completeley smashed this REALLY nice autotransformer.)

Ugh.  Having a good collection of parts and tools is great until you have
to move it long distances in a small car.

You have misread the article.

SP3 does not install IE7. If you had IE7 installed when you installed
service pack 3 you cannot remove IE7 without also removing the service
pack (MS suggest uninstalling the service pack, uninstalling IE7 and
then reapplying the service pack).

I would never leave my gear behind. Rent a truck with a car dolly and
move it all in one load.

You may stay there, in which case you'll be glad you did.

Get a temporary hitch for your car and a very lightweight trailer and
bring your stuff with you.

At work I am still stuck with IE6. At home I am using IE7 and
it is way better than IE6.

Firefox 3 Beta under Ubuntu, on the other hand, is better than
the previous version of Firefox 2 under Ubuntu. But still quite
bad in terms of stability. Maybe it is not the fault of Firefox but
Ubuntu or my system. But I am seriously to ditch Firefox
altogether under Ubuntu.

Under Windows, I like IE7 much more than Firefox even though
occasionally IE7 will have problem with a website but Firefox 2
is ok. But there are websites that IE7 is ok but not Firefox 2.

The new flash player has fixed 99% of the firefox problems i have had.
gnash is getting pretty close to good enough to replace adobes horrible
excuse for a product.
all it needs to do now is be able to lie to flash scripts that "require
the latest version of flash player"

Yes. Skimming tooo fast ... ;-)

It actually says:
Users who want to retain the ability to downgrade from IE7
to IE6 should uninstall the former before upgrading to XP
SP3. Once Windows XP has been updated to SP3, users can then
install IE7. That process allows for reverting to IE6 in the
future.

as you indicate.

That's because, they say, new IE6 and old IE6 are different.
I wonder how.

"The inability to downgrade to IE6 after installing XP SP3
was by design, said Maliouta, because the service pack
includes newer versions of the old browser's files. If
Microsoft had allowed users to revert back to the pre-SP3
version of IE6 - the one saved on users' PCs when they
upgraded to IE7, and until now what was used to back out of
the newer browser - Windows would have ended up in a "mixed
file state," "
