I upgraded to windows vista yesterday after making a drive image. Once it was loaded and running the computer was sick. The garish colours of the huge icons stared at me and Outlook did not work, several other programs failed to load and told me about it. So I restored by backup. Now all is well and Vista is on the shelf.

The operative word there being "Upgrade". If you'd done a clean install, you more than likely wouldn't have had the same quantity of issues. I did IT work for many years and never, ever had good luck with Windows upgrades from one OS to another. Running a clean install on a cleaned partition (i.e., FDISK and reformat) and then running the install seemed to work MUCH better.

Hope all are well today. Am in the lab, running clients through my study "The Influence of Photographic Exemplars on Perceptions of Issue Salience"... Yawn, yawn, right? :-)

I agree with Mark.  Fresh installs are always better than OS upgrades.  Opinion based on 40 years of field service for IBM.......

I particularly liked the comment, "the same quantity of issues."  Moving from W95 -> W98 went well, W98 -> W2K went well, W2K -> XP went well.  Xp -> Vista went wellllllll.

I follow a computer group on Yahoo and a lot of people are staying with or going back to XP.

Back to photo mode  :-)

I have one machine that I have upgraded from 3.1 to 95 to 98 to 98SE to 2000 to XP.  It is still usable, but I have had to clone the drive from 20MB to 160GB.  The file structure is a mess.

I agree that a clean install is the only way to go.

WOW... a machine that ran Win3.1 now runs XP??? You are not mortal, sir! :-) Bow, Bow, Bow...

Man, I remember those horrible days of Win3.11- Windows for Workgroups, Which is actually an old indian phrase that means "doesn't run worth a hoot". And don't even THINK about running Photoshop!!!

Who else here remembers Photoshop BEFORE it was an Adobe product? The first flatbed scanner I purchased came with "Thomas Knoll's Photoshop, v0.79", which was two floppy discs (And yes, I still have those disks). Primative by today's standards. Who remembers when you had to select with the marquee too to zoom-in, and then had to remember to zoom-out, otherwise your photo would have this Picasso look to it. :-). Ahhh... Thems' was th' days... hehehe.

I assure you, I am mortal, and foolish!  The machine has had several different motherboards and processors, and before each OS upgrade, I cloned (Norton Ghost) the hard drive over to one with higher capacity. I did it just to see if I could.

vista has been a colossal failure...i was reading that microsoft was either designing a new kernel, or thinking of extending the XP evolution, rather than continuing with vista...i could be wrong

When we had to wear suits and ties to work we went to the factory of one of our Customers, a suit maker & seller, and had suits made with 1 coat and 5 pair of pants.  First thing we did when we got to work was hang up the coat and the second was either tear or stain the pants so it worked out well.

Well I expect that Vista will rival the success of Windows ME.  I know why the gave it the name Millennium.  You would have to spend a 1000 years to get it to work.  They have had enough complaints over Vista that I suspect they are working on the next greatest thing already.

apparenly they were underway before they'd even released the first
service pack for vista

what's wrong with peoples old OS's?

when a new OS doesn't support peripherals you have and software you've
paid for.. when the OS prevents you from doing things *you* want to do,
it really doesn't look like an upgrade at all.

to be honest it's not all MS's fault - they had the info on the OS out
to all the vendors with plenty of time to spare, but I'm guessing the
vendors are overwhelmed with the constant need to write drivers.   when
a driver written in '95 works all the way through to 2000 and beyond all
is fine, but this constand demand to produce drivers every time a
company (be it Apple of MS) decides to make a change - it's got to
become annoying.

Well, the software developers really don't mind, and many even encourage it simply because in many instances, it becomes a revenue stream. Another point is that Microsoft and Apple keep a lot of these people employed as well because of this constant change.

I personally am perfectly happy with XP, and will typically keep an OS until the NEXT OS has at least 2-3 service packs. Normally, this is enough time to get all of the drivers out, get the big bugs worked out and have some amount of stability.
