Dear Wikispecies mailing list members:

Let me introduce myself. I am OhanaUnited, the new administrator of
this mailing list. I am also a bureaucrat at Wikispecies. Due to the
inactiveness of previous mailing list admin, all of us received plenty
of junk and advertising emails. I have filtered out over 10 junk mails
simply on my first day of administrating this list. Since the amount of
junk mail is very high, I have turned on moderation queue, that is, all
members using this mailing list to sent email to everyone subscribed on
the list will have to wait until I approve it. It is done purely to reduce spams and in no way attempting to censor information.

Request for activating the WikiTimeLine extension on wikispecies

Hi!

I think it would be a good idea to activate the WikiTimeLine MediaWiki extension in wikispecies. Here's a short description:

The MediaWiki extension WikiTimeLine version 1.0 is now released. It displays events, people, and such on an interactive timeline. Its working with JavaScript (client side, so it doesn't put load on the server) and its pretty interactive (moving around, zooming, clicking on events on the timeline). If you add WikiTimeLine tags with a start and end date to an article, you'll get a link in that article, and if you click on that link you'll add the event to the timeline. So its totally real-time. Unlike easytimeline which is creating pictures when the article is created, WikiTimeLine is controlled by the reader of the article, not the writer. So everyone can put together their own timeline to see how things went in history. It also allows ongoing events (that have not yet stopped) and alternative begin or end dates.

I think this would be a great extension for Wikispecies. Any interest in that?

Wikimania 2008: Registration opened

With less than three months to go until the fourth annual Wikimania
conference, registration has finally opened and will remain so until
the 15th of June. This year Wikimania starts with the a promise to
"Change the Shape of Wisdom" as it is hosted by Bibliotheca
Alexandrina, the reincarnation of the ancient Library of Alexandria,
one of pillars of this Earth when Philosophy and Wisdom are bought
into question. In Alexandria, from the 17th to the 19th of July, ideas
will be shared and discussed between people from all over the globe,
once again igniting the golden cosmopolitan age of the city.

As always, the conference will take place over 4 different tracks,
with a variety of speakers: Keynote, invited, and other. The
conference tracks this year are:

* Wikimedia Communities - Interesting projects and particularities
within the communities; policy creation within individual projects;
conflict resolution and community dynamics; reputation and identity;
multilingualism, languages and cultures; social studies.

* Free Knowledge - Open access to information; ways to gather and
distribute free knowledge, usage of the Wikimedia projects in
education, journalism, research; ways to improve content quality and
usability; copyright laws and other legal areas that interfere with
Wikimedia projects. Free Content in Middle-East/Africa countries.

* Technical infrastructure - Issues related to MediaWiki development
and extensions; Wikimedia hardware layout; new ideas for development
(including usable case studies from other wikis or similar projects).

* Scientific track - Papers submitted to the scientific track were
peer reviewed by scientific standards and accepted or rejected based
on these reviews. The papers will be published in proceedings
afterwards. Based on the number and the quality of the submission, a
journal special issue may be pursued

This year the conference is taking an interesting direction that hopes
to enlighten third world and Middle Eastern countries about the new
digital realm that is continuously expanding and evolving; as such,
along with many well reputed figures, an emphasis has been put on
bringing in Arab speakers. Speakers include Ahmed N. Tantawy, the
Technical Director of IBM in the Middle East; Eliane Metni, the
founding director of the International Education Association; Tim
Spalding, the founder and lead developer of LibraryThing; Eric M.
Johnson, the team leader for the Knowledge Management Action Team at
the U.S. Department of State; and Usama Fayyad, Yahoo!'s executive
vice president of Research & Strategic Data Solutions.

Take part on one of the most important IT events of the year. Check

Now that's a killer interface.

They don't have a statement about what the license will be, but they say this:
"A possible area of obstacles or dangers is intellectual property. The

accessible content, encouraging sharing, and so on. The world of the
Internet and software changes so fast, we know we need to be very

You do the same as you would for including a normal image. Just type
[[Image:Image name.jpg|thumb|Caption]]
on the article. As long as there isn't a local image of the same name,
this should work.

Help! I've looked high and low, and cannot seem to find anything that tells me how to include an image from commons into a Wikispecies article. I keep getting told it is possible, but cannot find a thing to tell me HOW. Please enlighten me.

For objects I'd say the Wikispecies-I may serve as (one of) the startingpoint, if objects get extended with properties describing them (e.g. Not just Paris quadrifolia, but also data on flower, leaves, biometrics…). I explicitly don't refer to them as species (because then the matching with a key -see below- apparently was already done, and my suggestion is to draw a line between these two)

For keys I think a whole new Wiki-project needs to be created, e.g. Wikikeys, consisting of key-engines that can be elaborated by Wiki-users.

So on the one hand we have the collectors (filling Wikispecies, but as far as I'm concerned it may also apply to stamp-collecters…), on the other hand the classifiers, developing keys (in Wikikeys) to classify those objects.

And now comes the hard part: For Wikikeys to work it should be construct where the key-developers enter (sets of) rules (may even be programs) that can evaluate into a likelyhood of Yes or No. E.g. if item's property flower-colour = Red, offering this specimen to the Flora-dichotomous-Linnaeus-key will encouter it with a rule on flower-colour which rules out Paris quadrifolia for 99%

I can elaborate on this but it may be usefull to first stick to this, check how much sense I made and if there's anybody interested to pick this thread up.

I'm new to wiki, and please let me know if I have to address other people.

Matching Wikispecies with Wikikeys

All,

Bringing up a database of species is one thing:-|.

But what about setting op two pools of data: Objects on the one hand, and keys on the other.

For objects Id say the Wikispecies-I may serve as (one of) the startingpoint, if objects get extended with properties describing them (e.g. Not just Paris quadrifolia, but also data on flower, leaves, biometrics). I explicitly don't refer to them as species (because then the matching with a key -see below- apparently was already done, and my suggestion is to draw a line between these two)

For keys I think a whole new Wiki-project needs to be created, e.g. Wikikeys, consisting of key-engines that can be elaborated by Wiki-users.

So on the one hand we have the collectors (filling Wikispecies, but as far as Im concerned it may also apply to stamp-collecters), on the other hand the classifiers, developing keys (in Wikikeys) to classify those objects.

Let the rest know about Wikispecies and help Wikizine (please)

Hi,

About some 6 months ago I started with an attempt to bring news with a
newsletter "Wikizine". I try to bring different types of news like
"Foundation", "Community", "Media" , "Technical news" and so.

The idea is to try to inform the reader about what is going on in the
Wikimedia family. Wikispecies is I believe the least known project of
all Wikimedia projects. I would like to change that a bit.

First step is to introduce Wikispecies to the other projects.

You can help be writing a small introducing about Wikispecies;

Further would some frequent reports be useful to inform the others
about this project. When making Wikizine I sometimes also to take a

So if you have news about your project please report it. Let the
readers of Wikizine know there is more then Wikipedia.

To make it more easy to report news to Wikizine and also for not
forgetting it consider putting a Wikizine-banner on some suitable
project page (maybe on to of the Village pump?)

Announcing... CommonsTicker

Hello,

CommonsTicker is a special tool created by
(commons:,meta:,:de:w:)User:Duesentrieb to allow for greater
communication and transparency between the Commons and local projects
(all projects, all languages) that use the Commons. When it is set up,
a log page is created and a bot posts updates about any critical
events that occur to any Commons images that are being used by that
project. Critical events are: image replacement (a new version of an
image being uploaded over the top of an existing one), an image being
marked or unmarked with a deletion tag (including no source, etc), and
an image being deleted.

This allows local project users to immediately identify any images
that have been nominated for deletion, giving them plenty of notice to
take part in the deletion discussion, as well as checking that image
replacements are not vandalism and removing any red links from deleted
images.

CommonsTicker is completely translatable (if you provide a
translation). All it needs to be set up is a project admin to
"sponsor" it through the early days. Now taking requests! :)

At http://wiktionaryz.org we are at the stage where we have our first
editable relational data (for a select group of people) in a
MediaWiki database.

As you may recall I promissed to produce a database design for
Wikispecies when the Wikidata functionality is adequate.
