If I understand well, you're trying to make intersection of categories.
If page in A & B, remove cat A and cat B, and add cat C.

Well, there's no common way that I know to do that using category.py .
You would have to write your custom script, or to do it using
replace.py, and some intricated regexes.

For the second part of your request ("and add new category Villages in
District X"), do you want to add a new subcategory "Villages" in
category "District X"? If I understood, you needn't a bot.

Interwikis for Categories Artist's Albums

Hi!

There are many categories for artist/band albums and their naming
looks very regular. I think will be good idea to create bot for
automating interwikis process. Bot should know root category (for
example, http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categor%C3%ADa:%C3%81lbumes_por_artista)
and rules to create category names in 2 languages (for example,
English and Spanish).

You should ask if the articles are about the same only if they have not interwiki to any the same language.

The safeguard in this case should be the bot operator having to say
yes or no to each proposed link. Apart from that this sounds like a
good idea.

I think will be good idea to improve interwikis bot to add guessing of
categories interwikis based on interwikis for articles with same name.
In many cases (countries, cities, administrative units, science
topics, etc) there is big probability that article and category with
same name will mean same thing. Also inclusion of article into
category with same name could be added as safeguard.

Interwikis for Categories by Country

Hi!

Wikipedia contains many categories of subject by country. There ~ 200
countries, so in many cases interwikis for such categories could be
missed.

I think will be good idea to create bot which will generate interwikis
by using 2 sets of parameters:

1) Template for generating dictionary of country names - category
names on 2 languages (for example English and Russian) which already
well interwiked: "National symbols of %s", "Государственные символы
%s".

2) Templates to generate new interwikis: for example "Football in %s",
"Футбол в %s"

I think such bot will definitely help to avoid routine work.

Thanks for the good pointers. On both zea and wo wikipedia disambig does not work as it should be for an interwiki bot to detect disambig page. Could someone look at it and make it work.

I think I'm doing more harm then good on both wo and zea if I'm going on the way I trying to make it work.

The right way to find out the disambiguation template is checking the
value of Mediawiki:disambiguationspage
For wo: that's the non-existing Template:Homonymie (value inherited from
fr:)

there is another important update for PyWikipediaBot, related to the one
described in my last mail. There was a bug in the XML reader of
PyWikipediaBot, other bot softwares are not affected.

The problem was that indentation whitespace was not properly ignored in the
XML reader. On the German Wikipedia, the bot therefore didn't
send "baseRevId=123456", but "baseRevId=123456\n ".

The current version of the Flagged Revs extension seems to be more strict than
before, so the superfluous whitespace is now a problem, as auto-reviewing no
longer works. I have just fixed that bug.

If you're running a bot that does changes on dewiki, please update to revision
5387 via SVN. An up-to-date nightly build will be available at about 20:00 UTC
at http://tools.wikimedia.de/~valhallasw/pywiki/ .

In the HTML of the edit page, there is a new hidden form element, called
baseRevId, for example:

You can also retrieve this revision ID from the XML that is returned by
[[Special:Export]].

When you post a page, you should include this revision ID in your POST
request.

When your bot account has a bot flag or an editor flag ("Sichter-Flag" in
German), or both, and it edits a page which has been recently reviewed, the
resulting page will then automatically be marked as reviewed as well. This
makes life easier for people who patrol recent changes etc., as they don't
have to review bot changes.

as you might know, the Flagged Revisions extension has recently been enabled
on the German Wikipedia. A minor change to the PyWikipediaBot was required so
that bots work properly with that extension. I have done this change and
committed it to SVN as revision 5330. [1]

If you run a bot that edits pages on de: (e. g. an interwiki bot), this update
is mandatory. Please update immediately, otherwise your bot might be in
danger of getting blocked because it increases the workload for users who are
reviewing articles.

If you are unable to update via SVN, please stop your bot and wait until
revision 5330 or higher is available on
http://tools.wikimedia.de/~valhallasw/pywiki/ .

There was problem in he:wiki, that they merged aricles about years to
decades, but in names of years. When it was corrected, they made another
articles about some years.

And some small wikis create automated stubs of years with interwiki to
all languages, so there are sometimes 20 or more incorrect links, most
of them are dead, but if one of them is redirect...

My bot have registration on all wikis, so I can do something...

Well, the problem did not create itself, but if bots in general are
well behaved, it should be fixable.

Just do

python interwiki.py 1190'erne -ignore:he:1190 -force

with a bot that is registered at all languages that have a page on the
decade (or, if it is not, do the remaining ones by hand). It will
remove the incorrect link, and get the thing working correctly again.

As for your fear that "before one such loop has been fixed, one or
more iw bots will start spreading the problem again." - this will not
happen unless their operators are doing a really bad job. A bot
working on the 1190s will find that there are languages for which it
gets two links - one for 1190s and one for 1190. In such a case, it
will not out of itself make a decision or in fact make any changes at
all. Instead,
* if the bot is running autonomously, it will skip the page
* if the bot is running interactively, it will ask the operator which
pages to include and which ones not

The only bot who will re-create the mess is an interactive bot in
which the operator makes the wrong choice as to what to include. Bots
do have a risk of copying mistakes, but once any loop to a different
page in the same language has been found, the bots will stop and just
ignore the pages involved.

[[da:1190'erne]]. Follow the interwiki links from that one. Follow te
interwiki links from the newly found articles. Wonder how you ended up
back af dawiki, but this time at the year 1190.

There is something rotten, not just in the state of denmark, but in a
lot of the wikipedia articles about years and decades. I've made a
simplified interwiki graph, <http://wegge.dk/interwiki-1190.png>. Be
warned that it's a 13522 x 309 png image. The graph clearly shows that
a lot of wikipedias have a path from their respective decade article,
via [[he:1190]], back to the same wikipedias year article. This is not
the only decade showing the problem, so it's not easy to fix. Given
the the large number of wikipedias involved, it's too large a task to
perform by hand, and I'm also afraid that before one such loop has
been fixed, one or more iw bots will start spreading the problem
again.

So does anyone have an idea about how to solve this mess by bot?

It might be good, if developers get some parameter to interwiki py, as
is now -new (e.g. -moved), which make bot to go through move log (and
-noredirect on local wiki only)...

possibility of payment for people to adapt wiki bots to Wikia's set up. The

Interwiki Templates problem

I got that message "While working on it.wiki your bot made several
errors, in fact it added interwikis for templates (such as templates for
flags) out of the <includeonly> tags, the consequence being that in the
pages which include those templates, several interwikis mistakenly link
to the template themselves."
