Just had a sale in Israel - $9, less 40% dist comm, 15% Alamy
comm, processing costs, cheque fee, etc, etc.
Just what I need to cheer me on my way to 10 days in eastern Canada :-)

John…

I too have just flagged three similar sales in Israel for almost identical
fees and also through a distributor. For the stated usage, the Alamy price
calculator shows a figure of £30 or around $60. It seems micro-payment is
already here whether you signed for Limited Use or not.

So why allow sub-agent sales? In these days of global communications,
if you want an agent in Israel, why not go and find one and deal
directly with them? Then it's a two way, not three way split.

Well, actually Neill, I don't allow sub-agent sales, except in a few
countries for which I have respect for their general social mores and
democratic principles.  But that's a real sweetheart deal.

John

Alamy claim they need to sell through distributor there because of local
knowledge and language problems. The Alamy price calculator apparently does
not reflect market rates for that country. I now know of five sales on the
same day, presumably to the same user, for identical $9.50 amount and usage.
And I have opted out of Limited Use.

There's another wrinkle to deals like this that irritates me.  Is
it legitimate (never mind reasonable or fair) for
any "agent/distributor/portal" to select one or two images from each
of several photographers and then make a sweetheart volume deal with
a customer based on a volume discount?  In my mind this borders on
f***d.

BTW, someone seems disappointed that there has been such poor
acceptance of Limited Use.

Dear John

Where did you hear that?

They still have many agencies listed who have asked to opt out.
However, they will still have millions of images left.

Fact is it happens and there is nothing anyone can do about it. What
prompted your comment about poor take up of Limited Use?

When a company marketing any other product gives a discount for
volume sales they discount their profit not what they pay to their
supplier.

Of course in a special case a company could go back to the
manufacturer and make special arrangements for one large volume sale
( this would be a large volume from one supplier only)  but in
general the first the first thing a retailer would do is to discount
their profit.

John is right it is unfair to have the photographers share of a sale
discounted when they only have one or two images included in a large
volume sale.    And the reason it happens is because photographers
assume " Fact is it happens and there is nothing anyone can do about
it."   Photographers could refuse to sign a contract that gave this
kind of power to their marketing agency.

Dear David

The problem is that the agency has not had to pay for the inventory.
They can make any bulk deal they like. I was recently told that a
major magazine has a deal for £40 with agency 'A' and £50 with agency
'G' but if they buy stock direct from a photographer they pay £175.

Some difference!

Bob

Makes you wonder why anyone would market through an agency?
