That sounds like some of the weirdness the Sony rootkit CD's had on Windows boxes.
That was never reported to have affected any Linux boxes as far as I know.
But it sounds like you've got one of those rootkit discs to me.
There was LAME code in those Sony disc rootkit files but I can't imagine how that would translate to files being erased from your drive.
I'll be really curious to see what the answer is to this one.
Maybe someone with more knowledge will jump in to help.
I guess you "refreshed" the kernel by reinstalling Kubuntu...
You say you reinstalled Kubuntu.
I use openSuSE but I know that after reinstalling the opsys like that I always create my standard user file during installation. The one I always use with my standard user name. And then I copy back all my archived user files....
If you use a similar process, you could be reintroducing a corrupt config file or something like that.
Is that possible?
