What kind of glue for plexiglass?I have an archival print washer that has a tiny leak. It took twenty four hours for 1/3 of the water to leak out and ultimately it will sit in a sink, so the leak won't matter. This kind of thing makes me crazy, so I want to stop the leak. What suggestions on products available in the USA could be used to potentially stop a leak where two pieces of plexiglass are joined. It would be nice if when the glue was applied the resulting patch was not butt ugly. Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass?Epoxy putty? I have never worked with plexi but someone told me that each manufacturer has his own plexi formula and thus his own special glue. That guy also told me that silicone will not adhere well enough to plexi - I was thinking about making myself a plexi aquarium instead of glass. But for your purpose it may well work using silicone, as you just need to fill that crack. Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass?Bill, Most cities have a plastic supply houseor two, and Huston's big enough that there must be several, in the yellow pages. They would have the answer. All in all, I think the silicone is a good idea. Probably available in small tubes from a pet store. Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass?Bill, TAP plastics with outlets in CA, is a great source for stuff like that: http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=130& If you live in CA the store staff are quite knowledgeable, because they fabricate plexiglass signs all the time in house. Since you want to run adhesive into a seam, you need the low viscosity adhesive as shown in link above. You could also just use Ether, if you can lay your hand on some. The tube adhesives for plexiglass tend to be higher viscosity so less likely to wick inside. (eg tube applied: http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=132&) As others pointed out, RTV silicon will also work well as a seal, if placed on inside. Many RTV's produce Acetic acid while curing, so you need to allow it to clear out by diffusion and maybe washing before you use it, as it acts like stop bath residue! Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass?Bill, Then you might try http://www.rplastics.com/plastic-glue.html or http://www.eplastics.com/Plastic/Adhesives It won't look as professional as duct tape though... Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass? The correct glue for plexiglass is a rather nasty solvent (various names) which is a thin clear fluid that melts the faces and allows a very strong weld style joint. However it is not a good gap filler so a decent caulking compound shoud do the job - a slow cure wet area silicone is good so long as the area is cleaned, absolutely dry and keyed with a solvent first. Not sure what would etch plexiglass - I'd try methylated spirits (denatured alcohol), mineral turpentine (oil paint thinner) and acetone as possibles. If you don't etch, black mould can creep under the sealant. Andrew Fildes afildes@... Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass? My vote would go for IPS Weld-On 3 I have edge cemented 1mm thick acrylic & fixed innumerable plastic toys with this stuff... Re: What kind of glue for plexiglass?<snip> -----Original Message----- From: olympus-owner@... [mailto:olympus-owner@...] On Behalf Of Andrew Fildes The correct glue for plexiglass is a rather nasty solvent (various names) which is a thin clear fluid that melts the faces and allows a very strong weld style joint. </snip> Not so much of a grammatical correction (I'm just as guilty of those mistakes as anyone else), more of a technical correction. I remember my GCSE Technology teacher berating me for describing the process with the solvent as "melting". Melting involves heat. What the solvent is doing is, as the word "solvent" implies, dissolving. End result is the same though, and it's the way I'd go. Use the solvent to stick it together (should add strength to the crack / break and hopefully stop it spreading), then maybe use some silicon to fill the gap if there is still a gap ? Hope that helps, Jon ============================================== List usage info: http://www.zuikoholic.com List nannies: olympusadmin@... ============================================== |
