What does it take to program an ATMEGA 8515?What is the cost of a device to ICSP (in circuit serial program) an
ATMEGA8515 16JC 0452C in a 44J package? The datasheet shows which pins and actually gives some detail on the signals, but I'll be darned if I can find anything on the Atmel page that specifies a programming device for it. Most likely I'm just going blind, but hopefully someone out there knows off the top of their heads. Bringing up AVR Studio and going into tools, the AVRISP mkII has the ATMega8515 on it's drop down list. This is not a guarantee that it will actually work, since I don't have that chip here to test it. The AVRISP mkII is $35.91 at digikey. Bill -- Psst... Hey, you... Buddy... Re: What does it take to program an ATMEGA 8515?The AVRISP mkII can program all AVR 8-bit devices with an ISP interface.
http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?family_id=607&family_name=AVR%AE+8%2DBit+RISC+&tool_id=3808 It can be bought from Mouser or DigiKey for about $36 Moses On Fri, 2008-05-23 at 10:43 -0700, James Newton wrote: > What is the cost of a device to ICSP (in circuit serial program) an > ATMEGA8515 16JC 0452C in a 44J package? > > The datasheet shows which pins and actually gives some detail on the > signals, but I'll be darned if I can find anything on the Atmel page that > specifies a programming device for it. > > Most likely I'm just going blind, but hopefully someone out there knows off > the top of their heads. > > James Newton: PICList webmaster/Admin > mailto:jamesnewton@... 1-619-652-0593 phone > http://www.piclist.com/member/JMN-EFP-786 > PIC/PICList FAQ: http://www.piclist.com > > -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

Re: What does it take to program an ATMEGA 8515?Last time I looked into programming an Atmel, I found some low-cost entry-level programmers at sparkfun.

The price of a real AVRISP is nothing even for a hobbiest, so for a professional like James it should be a mandatory purchase. :-) Regards John Samperi ******************************************************** Ampertronics Pty. Re: What does it take to program an ATMEGA 8515?... amen ... Atmel's AVRISP mkII In System Programmer is Mouser p/n:
556-ATAVRISP2 and sells for $35.91 in qty=1! (plus shipping of course) It will, among many others, program an 8515. We try to keep the device support up to date, but sometimes Atmel sneaks them past us. :) BryanW Software Engineer, Embedded Results ltd, t/a kanda.com -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |

Re: What does it take to program an ATMEGA 8515?>> DO NOT FALL for cheap programmers!! They cost a LOT more
>> in wasted time and dead chips. Are you basing that on actual experience with cheap AVR programmers? My impression has been that due to fewer changes in technology, fewer chips, and perhaps a more forward-thinking algorithm, the "cheap" AVR programmers were more reliable than cheap PIC programmers, for example. For instance, the cheap tiny11 programmer (serial port bit-bang) that I built works better than my STK-500 (which I never got to work for tiny11s.) OTOH, many of the cheap designs use the PC parallel port, which is likely to have all the same problems of other parallel port programmers on modern PCs. I'm basing it on 7 years helping out people on Avrfreaks that kill their chips with cheap programmer, especially parallel port programmer with their confusing hex fuse setting software. For me, I just do not want to exit Studio, all that I need is in one IDE which works fairly well...apart from the occasional bug... Having said that I started off with a PPP with the 4 resistors, (233 MHz processor win 3.11) but once I started to use AVRs for real I got an AVRISP, it just works. I also have a STK500 and a Dragon which can be used as backup programmers. Regards John Samperi ******************************************************** Ampertronics Pty. Also its the real price not the subsidised by marketing price. Oh and it has an avrstudio plugin too, if you don't want to leave studio. -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist |
