Web Services questionWe are in the process of determining a registry/repository
for our web services. We are trying to get a feel for what is being used by
people to allow people to find web services. I would really appreciate a short response to the below low
tech survey. Thanks!!! ( ) Open Source UDDI – Please list
________________________________ ( ) Proprietary UDDI – Please list
________________________________ ( ) Non-UDDI – Please list
________________________________ ( ) Windows 2003 ( ) We are a University, we have students for that ( ) Other – Please list

Re: Web Services questionSherwin, let me respond to the very specific registry question, not the
broader repository part of your post. The eFramework for Education and Research appears to be recommending or suggesting UDDI. From their newsletter: "Australia Adopts OASIS Standards to Streamline Financial Reporting The Australian Government has launched the Standard Business Reporting (SBR) programme, a long-term initiative to save business time, money and frustration. SBR will explore the integration of the WS-BPEL, WS-Security, and UDDI and Tax XML OASIS Standards, as well as other specifications for Web services and financial reporting: www.treasurer.gov.au/tsr/content/pressreleases/2007/084.asp." (www.e-framework.org/News/eFrameworkNews/Newsletter/October2007/tabid/953/Default.aspx) See also www.e-framework.org/Default.aspx?tabid=783 UDDI was considered for the Meteor Project here in the U.S. that exchanges messages among universities, student loan lenders, and guaranty agencies. However the functionality appeared to exceed the needs of the network. The Project developed a more simple registry. Now that other data may be added to the exchanges--such as high school and college transcripts--it is likely UDDI will be used soon as the Web Services registry even though there is some additional complexity that is not yet needed. In June 2007 David S Alderson, University of Maryland, included UDDI in his JA-SIG Conference briefing with this listing of options: # Service Registry (jUDDI, Infravio [subsequently purchased by Web Methods], UDDI); It is also listed in the University of California Irvine's Kuali implementation task list: Web Services/UDDI and SOA Infrastructure. Their are several on PESC's EA2 Task Force that could provide guidance. Their next conference call is Wednesday, July 16, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. If you would like to join the call and ask this question, send an email to Charlie Leonhardt who chairs the Task Force. If you cannot join the call, I could ask the question for you and provide the response. There are a number of Web Services projects underway that likely would use UDDI if there were an implementation. Because UDDI is used in industry, though less widely that SOAP, long term sustainability suggests the implementation of UDDI rather than a locally developed alternative. I should also mention that Sun Microsystems had an implementation of UDDI when the Meteor Project prototype was done in 2001. However it was then a licensed product. It operated well and meet all requirements. This is the list of components that have been suggested for the expanded Meteor-like network: * Java 2 SDK—Sun's Java 2 SDK SE, version 1.4.2_04. * J2EE build and runtime environment—Sun Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.3.1. * Web server and/or servlet container—Apache Tomcat, version 5.0.24. * SOAP processing framework—Apache Axis that ships with jUDDI. * Data storage mechanism—MySQL relational database, version 4.0.19.(uPortal users likely would select Postgres). * UDDI registry framework—registry framework jUDDI. Likely this would need to be updated to current releases. The point is: the parts are all there from sustainable sources. jim farmer Sherwin M.
