WarehouseHi All,
Construction is well underway at the new CNFractal Warehouse, thanks to the efforts of Dave Strohbeen. I did come across 2 files, the ownership it undertermined - someone claim them: 1116805063_Melting Icicles.mp3 1148577361_Faith.mp3 We'll keep you updated on progress, and sometime soon let you know when it is ready! thanks, PhilJ |

Re: WarehouseHi All,
The 'CNFractal Warehouse' is almost ready to open - you can check it out at http:/cnfractal.artsong.org/ Current 'CNFractal Warehouse' users do NOT need to re-register; we will automatically create accounts for you. If you are already registered to use the current warehouse you should receive an activation email (at the email address we have on file for you) that contains your username and a randomly generated password. You will need to activate within 24 hours of recieving the email or the entry gets automatically erased and you will need to manually register. If you do not receive such an activation email within the next day (or so) then we probably do not have your current email address - you will have to manually register. The new site provides capability for attaching reviews, comments, and ratings to uploaded files, and the ability for users to submit news items or articles of general interest to the group - these later items will appear on the main home page for all visitors to see. Currently submission of most comments, reviews, news items etc, can be performed by any registered user of the warehouse website. However, uploading files is limited to registered users of the warehouse site who are also registered members of the cnFractal users forum. Please note that initially all submissions will be reviewed prior to posting. As you activate your accounts I will try to associate your uploaded files with your new account ids - please be patient. As soon as current files are assigned I'll activate your account to enable Uploading. You will be notified of the activation and a new link will appear on the Your_Account page that will take you to your file management controls. A few Uploading differences to note: 1) each archive file must have a unique filename - we are no longer appending the numerical 'time stamps' to insure this. If you are uploading a new version of a previously uploaded file; you will first need to DELETE your old file prior to uploading the new file. Alternatively if you must keep multiple versions of a project you can name them sequentially as mycoolfile_v2, mycoolfile_v3, etc. You can only delete/edit your own files. 2) Prior to uploading a new file - To save time I recommend you search the archives for any existing file already using that filename. The new upload facility will not allow you to over write an existing file (because it may not be yours); and it will not automatically rename your file. 3) Each user can individually control whether or not to receive email notifications of new file submissions - by toggling the 'receive newsletter' option on the Your_Account page. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Dave S ----- Original Message ----- From: pjfjacks To: cnfractal_music@... Warehouse uploadI have a new 5 MB mp3 file that I would like to upload to share -
somehow I get "upload failed" at the warehouse. I tried a few names and file types. Any suggestions on what I might try to get a new file uploaded? Thanks, Jim |

Were you here : http://cnfractal.artsongdirect.com/ at the new Warehouse site? The old one is being "decommissioned" ....and may well not work at all. Yes, and I can see my existing files with the new names, where the time date stamps have been removed. It takes quite a while to get that "upload failed" message - I think it does upload my 5MB, and then something gets grumpy. I have no idea what, though! Thanks, Jim |

Re: Re: Warehouse uploadJim,
Sounds like a possible filenaming problem : 1) Have you searched the file archives to ensure that your attempted filename was not already in use (maybe by someone else)? - The new site no longer appends 'timestamps' to ensure unique filenames and the behavior you describe would occur if an newly uploaded file tried to use a filename already in use. 2) or If your filename has spaces or strange characters, try changing the filename to something without any spaces or other strange characters (I think you will need to do this on your computer prior to uploading)... Re: Warehouse uploadThanks for the suggestions... I did have a space in the file name on
my computer. I tried again after fixing that - I even moved the file so there were no blanks in the path name. Failed again! It takes quite a while, so my guess is that it finds the file OK on my computer. The filename on my computer is now "micropun.mp3". I use that same name as the title. I am shoosing "Music Files/MP3" as the file category. Happy to try any suggestions! Maybe other folks will have similar difficulties, so the exercise is not for the sake of just this one file. Re: Re: Warehouse uploadHi Jim,
I've run some tests and determined that the problem is not on your end... Upload still works for small files but for larger files (don't know the exact threshold value) either the file size or script execution time is causing an upload failure... I will need to find out what changes the host may have made that would have affected the upload script execution. Dave S ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim K To: cnfractal_music@... Re: Re: Warehouse uploadThere should be a couple of values in the PHP.ini file that are used to
limit this something like max_upload_size and max_file_size Thinking that this is set to 3 MB by default. PhilJ. The file is there... and an upload notice will have been sent to anyone subscribed to the 'newsletter' - but the file will not show up in your personal management area until an administrator adds it. micropun2--- In cnfractal_music@..., "Dave Strohbeen"
<dstrohbeen@...> wrote: > > Hi Jim, > > The file is there... and an upload notice will have been sent to anyone subscribed to the 'newsletter' - but the file will not show up in your personal management area until an administrator adds it. > > You should find it now. > > Dave S Yes, now I see it. So here is a little blurb I wrote to explain the idea behind this piece, micropun2.mp3: The ideas behind this piece start with the Pythagorean principle that harmonious combinations of notes have frequencies with simple rational ratios. Based on this, the straightfoward way to select a collection of notes, out of which music is to be composed, is to select a collection of rational numbers along with some root frequency. This is the "just tuning" system, and it works well. There are several problems, though, with just tuning. 1) It's not hard to accumulate an unwieldy number of rational numbers in even a single musical composition, resulting in a cumbersome musical instrument. 2) It becomes almost inevitable when one uses a single instrument to play many musical compositions, especially when they can easily start off on different notes and head in different directions - the collection of rational numbers required keeps growing, the more compositions one wants to play. But the most curious problem with just tuning is 3) as noted by Easley Blackwood in his book _The Structure of Recognizable Diatonic Tunings_, the modern Western classical musical tradition doesn't really adhere to the Pythagorean principle in a strict way. There are many pairs of "simple" rational numbers that differ by quite a small amount - one common musical difference is 80:81. The ear cannot readily between such closely spaced notes. Generally the musical context will make it clear which precise note should fit. But what happens in Western classical music from Bach to Mahler is that the complex context creates ambiguity. Certain notes could fit into the context in different ways, depending on exactly which rational number their frequency corresponds to. But such precision would destroy the musical ambiguity - and the ambiguity is a crucial component in the way the musical composition works. So it is really impossible to play modern classical music in just tuning. The music is intimately tied to the 12 tone equal temperament tuning system. In a tempered system, one note is used to represent several just-tuned notes whose frequencies are very close. Equal temperament systems have the huge advantage of symmetry - every note has the same harmonic environment. 12 tone equal temperament has a note very close the the just perfect fifth, and a passable approximation to a just major third. Obviously, it can be used to create great music. 53 tone equal temperament should also have excellent harmonic potential, from a mathematical perspective. It would be difficult to build practical musical instruments with so many notes, but there is no challenge in creating the notes when using electronic synthesis. Composition is not so easy, though. Of course one can simply transcribe any music that is composed for just tuning. When the rational interpretation of notes is ambiguous, as in modern classical music, then transcribing from one tuning system to another is problematic. Each tuning system clusters rationals in its own way, thus creating its own ambiguities with their own compositional opportunities. 53 note equal temperament demands new music. So what I am doing is attempting to explore some of the musical possibilities of this terrain. I have imposed a sequence of keys, each key being a preferred set of seven notes. As the note sequence moves from key to key, some notes have multiple interpretations in terms of rationals. I can't claim to be able to hear this feature - right now it is more of a mathematical exercise. So this project remains at an early stage - this piece is just one step! |
