When I switch virtual desktop, I get a window showing me which desktop I am currently in. Can I get the same thing in XFCE?

First off, you are going to need to tell us what you are using to get

"When I switch virtual desktop, I get a window showing me which
        desktop I am currently in."

When you give us this info, we may be able to answer you question.
*PLEASE INCLUDE CONTEXT* we are not mind readers.

Xfce doesn't have such an information, but one could easily write a GTK+
dialog for it with libwnck or apparent.  There was a hack for it, I
think left on the mailing-list, it must be from 2007.

It's not very pretty...  if you know any C, you could prettify it.
Could also ditch the window and have it run 'notify-send' with some
text instead, assuming you have a notification daemon installed.

I can do that, it's Window Maker... Disclaimer: I haven't used it since
2000 maybe, but I still get a glimpse of that OpenStep window manager
when I pass by one of my co-workers' desk.

When switching to a new workspace a fading tooltip appears in the
middle of the screen showing the name of the current workspace. It is
actually a nice-looking and useful feature if you don't use a workspace
switcher, which highlights the current workspace (I don't use one
either).

Mind reader at your service, :)

Thx, worked like a charm... It's been a while since I used C but I will see if I can do something with it if I find the time... :)

I use this often.  (Thanks.)

On an x86_32 system (OpenSuse 10.3), it puts the status block in the
center of the screen, which I consider Good.  On an x86_64 system
(also OpenSuse 10.3), it puts the status block at the upper left corner
of the screen, which I dislike.

Any ideas?  Different versions of some library maybe?
