Upgrading from 1.9 -> 2.2 Problems - Lost Posts

A couple of days ago I took the plunge and upgraded from 1.9 to 2.2
with limited success and I'm still failing to find a solution to the
problems. Essentially Pebble refuses to recognise any of the posts I
wrote when using 1.9; they're in the correct directory structure with
the right permissions but I can't get Pebble to display them. There
are other symptoms too - if I regenerate the indexes then I loose the
welcome note blog entry that the installation created and the next
time I restart tomcat I get a new one (in the blogs directory).
Tomcat runs out of memory too when pages are requested - clearly
something is wrong.

I've seen a number of emails to this list from people who've had
problems upgrading from 1.9 -> 2.x and I've followed every set of
instructions I can find on this but to no avail. I've looked into GMT
date issues, privileges, the structure of the directory, reindexing
and themes but now I've exhausted all reasonable options. Can anyone
suggest anything.

Cheers

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Here are a few things to try (some of which you've probably done already).

 - Stop your web server.
 - Make sure your blog data directory structure has been modified to
look like this -> http://pebble.sourceforge.net/upgrading1x.html
 - Open up the blog.properties file for your blog(s) and remove the
theme property (line starts theme=).
 - Remove the pebble.version file underneath each of your blog directories.
 - Restart your web server.

Is this a default Pebble 2.2 installation? (i.e. you've not modified
the default theme, etc)

Cheers
Simon

Hi Simon

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately it was not a success. I
followed your instructions - I'd already restructured the data
directory but not removed the theme line or pebble.version file but
this didn't seem to solve it. When I started Tomcat only the welcome
note was recognised. Just as a test I clicked the Reindex link on the
utilities page and now unfortunately even the welcome note entry has
disappeared (though not from the data directory) as a result.

Yes it is the default 2.2 installation. Aside from the url property
of the pebble.properties file I've changed nothing within the webapps
directory. Have a feeling I've missed something obvious since there
are a lot of other people that have upgraded to 2.2 without problems.

Regards

Jonathan

Do you get any errors when starting Pebble up (after you've removed
that pebble.version file)? I'm wondering whether the automatic upgrade
isn't working for some reason.

Feel free to ZIP up your blog data directory (excluding the logs),
send it to me off-list and I'll take a look for you. :-)

Just a follow-up; turns out that a zero length file was causing the
re-indexing process to fail. There were errors in the logs, but it
wasn't clear which file was causing the problem, so I've enhanced the
error reporting.

Cheers

Hi,
Has issue relating to tomcat running out of memory been resolved. We have been running pebble 2.2 for the last 6 months or so. It has been working fine, but the last month we have started running into Out of Memory issues! any help is greatly appreciated. Could this be related to data size? Thanks

The causes for Out of Memory Error could be several, I can think of many
fixes:
The questions:
* What memory are you out of? Heapspace or PermGen? (The exception
usually tells you this - examine your logfiles)
* What applications do you run on top of tomcat other than Pebble?
* What are your jvm-settings regarding maximum memory?
* What jvm are you running on? (I assume the Sun vm)
* How do you deploy/update your applications? By (re)placing them in
webapps or do you stop/start tomcat for upgrades.

Basically:
Tomcat is capable of updating webapps on the fly, e.g. while running.
There are some issues though, that may cause tomcat not to be able to
free some memory, so that sooner or later an OutOfMemory (PermGen) is
triggered. The limit for this could be pushed further into the future
with the option -XX:MaxPermSize=128M on a Sun-vm.
If you are out of Heapspace, the amount of available heapspace can be
raised with -Xmx512M. Note: The numbers are arbitrary examples and do
not reflect pebbles requirements.

For these options create (on Linux) TOMCAT_HOME/bin/setenv.sh and edit
the file to assign your chosen options to JAVA_OPTS like this:
   JAVA_OPTS="-XX:MaxPermSize=128M -Xmx512M"
On windows the filename is setenv.bat and the line starts with "SET",
otherwise everything else is the same.

Note: The file does not exist in tomcat as delivered from apache, but
will be read if it exists. This is a nice way to keep all your settings
separated from the stock tomcat options.

Hope this helps,
Olaf

Hi,
Thanks a lot for your response. I see the following error message

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

 in catalina.out.

and here is the GC dump

1. I have added the -Xmx1000M. I used jhat to interpret the java_pid file and saw that tomcat crashed when the memory consumption was ~ 870 M.
2. We run our business app (a struts2 webapp) and pebble under tomcat.
3. We already have the Perm Gen space set to 150 M and I don't think that's the issue from log.

I am not sure if pebble is causing this, but the top 4 out of 5 entries from running Jhat are and that's why i think may be pebble is using more memory! I may be totally off!

30532 instances of class net.sourceforge.pebble.domain.Tag
22633 instances of class net.sourceforge.pebble.domain.Content$1
20518 instances of class net.sourceforge.pebble.domain.BlogEntry
14555 instances of class net.sourceforge.pebble.index.IndexedTag

and that made me suspect that pebble is taking a lot of memory!

Thanks
Vijay

Hi,

sorry, I've been unavailable for some days. From what you posted it
seems like your memory settings are ok. I usually run on much less
memory. Is your server under intense stress - e.g. what's the number of
hits you get per day/hour/... prior to the out of memory error? This
might provide a starting point for some more or less sophisticated load
tests.

One more possibility: How about operating two tomcat instances - one for
each application? The way you do this is (provided they are running on
the same hardware/OS): On the new tomcat instance: change every
instances of 'port="..."' in conf/server.xml to another value and tweak
your settings on the frontend server (if you have another server in
front of tomcat - like apache with mod_jk2 or similar) to delegate to
the other server. These servers should need less max memory, so that it
usually is possible to run two servers at once. Keep an eye on which one
fails first.

Cheers,
Olaf
