Unreadable menusHi there,
I've been trying to run GIMP 2.4.5. on Vista but when opening all the menus are unreadable. I'm running Vista. Any ideas? This is what I see: http://i31.tinypic.com/mue7up.gif Cheers |

Re: Unreadable menusAs your e-mail address is in.il, your locale is probably set to Hebrew
or Arabic (and the screenshot indeed confirms that it is a RTL language that fails to display), and GIMP thus wants to show its UI in that language. But then you use a font that doesn't cover Hebrew or Arabic. There are several ways around the problem. The least intrusive is to simply run GIMP in English instead. For instance, start GIMP with a two-line .bat file that sets the LANG environment variable to en and then starts GIMP. Or just uninstall GIMP and reinstall it without the localisations. Or just remove the share\locale folder from GIMP's installation. A bit more intrusive (affecting other apps, too) is to change your locale in the Control Panel's Regional and Language Options to English or whatever. Or then you could change the font that GIMP uses when you use the ms-windows theme engine, it's one of the fonts in Display Properties:Appearance:Advanced. Choose some font that covers Hebrew (or Arabic). Or you could even just stop using the ms-windows theme engine. --tml |

Re: Unreadable menus> Dump Vista?
His problem is hardly Vista specific. --tml |

Another help question, please?Hi everyone:
I'm enjoying this program and learning something new everyday from the program itself as from the discussions here. Now, I find myself with a new dilemma. Is there any way to save my files as jpegs which will not always default to the gimp program? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. |

Re: Another help question, please? You control what program opens which file type not by GIMP, but
(assuming you are using Windows) by Windows. Open 'My Computer', then 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'File Types'. You will see a long list of file types. I use the simple program "Windows picture and Fax Viewer", which gives a fast preview of your jpeg (or whatever other visuals you want to see quickly). You can add to the 'send-to' menu in Windows explorer (under your user name in the "Documents and Settings" folder) to add functionality to right-clicking on various files. If I decide a particular file needs GIMPing, I just right-click and 'send to' the workhorse. --- In gimpwin-users@..., "twostepyankee" <twostepyankee@...> wrote: > > Hi everyone: > > I'm enjoying this program and learning something new everyday from the > program itself as from the discussions here. At some point (maybe in the install of the Gimp program) you must have specified that Gimp is to be used if you double-click in Explorer on a JPG file. Easiest way to fix that is to right-click on a JPG file and select "Open With ...". If that entry isn't there I believe shift+right-click will cause it to appear. It should show you the programs that are currently installed that have registered as being able to open JPG files. If the one you want (eg. Irfan View, MS Paint or whatever you used to use before installing Gimp) is there click "Always use this program to open this type of file" then select it. If not use the [Browse ...] or [More ...] option to navigate to the desired program and select it. From now on JPG's will open with that program if double-clicked in Explorer. Regards ... Right click on the JPEG select "Open With" and then the program you wish to use. Check the box saying "always use........." Ron Ferguson |
