Uninstallation Problem

Dear all,

I have 2 seperate folders: texmf and localtexmf. To uninstall Miktex, I
went to Add/Remove program. But there is no Miktex. I dont remember I have
already installed it or that folder is not there since the beginning.

So if I want to uninstall Miktex, how should I remove texmf and
localtexmf ? By simply deleting the folder? Or is there some graceful method
?

The reason why I want to uninstall the Miktex as follows. When I compile tex
file in cygwin, I got some errors. I think there are some built-in font
folders in cygwin (TeTex) and I have Miktex and pTex. I dont know what
happened in what fonts. So firstly, I am reinstalling cygwin. If I cant
still compile tex file, then I will reinstall Miktex and uninstall pTex.  So
to reinstall Miktex, I need to unstall it first.

Any idea will be much appreciated.

regards,
yuki

localtexmf sounds as if you still have miktex 2.4. I don't remember if
it puts things in registry. I don't think not, probably you could
deinstall it simply by deleting the folders.

But be aware: - The current version of miktex is 2.7 and a lot of
things have changes.

- I don't think it will solve your problems if
you de/reinstall Miktex or cygwin. The most probably sources of
problems are wrong path settings and a faulty document. Neither
problem will be cured by reinstalling. It is much better if you first
make a complete minimal example that demonstrates your problem and
sent it together with a log file. You should also check the value of
the PATH-variabel.

Hi,

Thanks for your email. Last night I reinstalled cygwin.  I havent
manually remove texmf and localtexmf folders yet although I dont remember I
uninstalled MikTex in several months ago. And I didnt uninstall pTex as per
your suggestion.)

I will include some problems when I tried to compile tex file in cygwin.

$ latex
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)
**my_file.tex
kpathsea: Running mktexfmt latex.fmt
/usr/bin/mktexfmt: line 333: /texconfig/tcfmgr: No such file or directory
fmtutil: config file `fmtutil.cnf' not found.
I can't find the format file `latex.fmt'!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

when I tried platex command, I got some warnings (mentioned those warnings
in the end of this email).  but .dvi showed up in my current working folder.
So I double-cliced .dvi file, warning message box came up saying " Font path
is not set. Install fundamental parameters?". When I clicked Yes button.
Error message box "Cannot resolve Fonts" came up.   And "Illegal Args(1/1)"
window,  I found the following.

Set environment variable TEXPK (Option ->Setup Parameters->Font)

Example: set TEXPK=b:^d\^s.^d;dpi^d^g^s.pk;b:\font\^l.far^g^s;b:^l\^s.pxl
         ^d: dpi number
         ^l: dpi number x 5
         ^s: font name
         ^g: GTH/far file

I tried .dvi file in different way using "dvipdf my_file.dvi" in cygwin, I
got the following.

$ dvipdf my_file.dvi
dvips: Font ptmr8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font ptmr8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font ptmbi8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font ptmr8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font ptmr8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font ptmr8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font ptmr8r not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Font min10 not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Can't open font metric file min10.tfm
dvips: I will use cmr10.tfm instead, so expect bad output.
dvips: Checksum mismatch in min10
dvips: ! invalid char 17236 from font min10

For reference, I included warnings when I compiled tex file in cygwin using
platex command.
