I had horrible troubles with my WRT54G and Bittorrent. I reflashed
with DD-WRT and my problems went away!

That is one darn fine router. I love mine. Zero problems. Zero restarts.
Rock solid. And if and when it gets replaced, it turns into a wireless robot
controller.

My router is the famous Linksys WRT54G (the old version with v2.2 firmware
and embedded Linux) which has been with me for two and half years.

It is in its stock config. I was tempted to to use alternative firmwares
but decided not to.

So what is your recommendation?

The best solution I have found is to bridge the modem. That means that the
p2p won't hammer the NAT table of the modem and you have a better chance of
maxing out your speed.

Watch out for modems that may overheat when you use the wireless heavily.

if you can't bridge, you may have to limit the number of connections in your
torrent client, but then you may not be able to download at full speed.

My ISP lets me make multiple pppoe connections through the one modem, so I
can have a bridge to a PC and have everything else still NAT'd behind the
modem.

Since I have had ADSL2+, I just download the ubuntu mini.iso and do a
network install from my ISP's mirror ;)

For torrents on linux rtorrent + screen works well for most things.

Since the config I have can saturate my 5Mbps pipe I've never actually
researched, so I can't give a recommendation.

Google is your friend, but offhand I'd at least flash your router with
the DD-WRT. I'm using that firmware to enable a VPN to my home network,
but I wouldn't be surprised if it was also optimized for P2P. If not,
since it's fully open linux you can optimize to your hearts content.

I did find one bug they forget to solve.

But it seems to me one bug remains even in Ubuntu 8.04.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usbutils/+bug/159189

mcuee@ubuntu804:~$ lsusb -t
cannot open /proc/bus/usb/devices, No such file or directory (2)

They should actually patch usbutils (lsusb) to remove the -t option.

It is now confirmed.
