UPDATE: EAC freezes while burning on Vista computer

A belated thanks to M Richter, J Fensome and M Walsh for their advice and
help.  Unfortunately, I had, or now have, tried all of their suggestions,
but none has helped.  I still can't burn after loading different ASPI
drivers, and after installing and running the current pre-beta 4 EAC program
in compatibility mode. Moreover, I just bought another new Vista quad core
computer that does the exact same thing!

My previous post explained the problem that I was having burning discs on my
new office computer with EAC 0.99 pre-beta 4 and earlier EAC versions.  The
new office computer is a Systemax "Beast" running Vista Ultimate on an
IntelR Core2 Quad Processor Q6600, with 4GB DDR2 RAM and a 1TB HD.  I
explained that ripping a disc w/ EAC works fine, but burning freezes the
program, stalling the burning at the 'writing lead-in" phase after the data
counter stops at 6.12mb, while the timer counters keep running.  Nothing is
written to the disc, and I end up having to shut down the program with Task
Manager.

I just purchased an HP Pavilion Elite 9040 desktop for my home that is very
similarly equipped to my work computer, with the same Q6600 processor
running Vista Ultimate (a fool never learns.)  I installed EAC 0.99 pre-beta
4 last night on it, and lo and behold, it does the exact same thing as my
office computer, freezing while writing with the data counter stopping a
6.12mb!  This leads me to believe that there may be an inherent conflict
with EAC and the quad core processor, or with Vista Ultimate.

Any ideas short of partitioning the drives and installing XP?  Thanks in
advance for any help.

In EAC options/Write tab try turning off Use CDRDAO for writing in the
EAC layout editor. If your drive is compatible with EAC's internal
writing routines this should work. Other wise try running EAC in
Administrator Mode and see if that helps.

It works!  Turning off the CDRDAO option cured the problems.  Thanks
so much Michael for taking time to help me out.  I feel a little like
a fool for not trying that earlier, but at least now we have a record
for anyone stumped by this problem in the future.  Thanks again!

Dear Mike
Has anyone tried advising you to disable the imapi
service in your OS?

Sometimes, the Windows Media Player uses this and as it is often on the
start menu or the
quick launch taskbar, (and if it is) somewhere some parts of both the
media-player are pre-loaded.
This occasionally also pre-loads the Imapi CD writing service,  for
windowsXP or Vista.

This is known to interfere with EAC sometimes on some systems.

Trying to turn this off often works.

Also use the Taskmanager (use [CTRL+ALT+DEL] to start Taskmanager) to
look out for the
following files that appear to also interfere with EAC, you may have to
do this repeated times for
some of the items (RUNDLL???? is awful to kill.) kill them with right
mouse-click, and select kill Tree.

ctfmon.exe
dllhost.exe

Why I don't know, sometimes these programmes interfere as well.

There is also a media-player component (which I have completely blocked
by system-mechanic) called
Wn??CFG??.exe or similar, this seems to be a pre-config tool for
XP/Vista but seriously interferes with
EAC. Use taskmanager to kill it too. It won't interfere with the OS,
only the DRM stuff.

Also have you recently placed a "Copy-protected" CD into your PC?
Despite the DOJ and EEC rules
against ROOTKITs music manufactuers are still sending these discs out.

I recently got Mike Oldfields' - "The Complete Tubular Bells", this had
numerous viruses and a ROOTKIT on
the DVD, the third CD, "Tubular Bells III" seems to be worse of the lot.

DON'T PUT ANY OF THESE CDs or the DVD into your PC, before backing
everything up to an external
source from where you can easily restore it. Also if you know how to
create a 'Virtual PC' try placing EAC into
one of your Virtual PCs. Virtual version 2004, whatever it is called is
a free download from Microsoft.

If you have inserted one of these copy protected CDs I recommend that
you also get AVG version 8.0 the
registered version. This  has an inbuilt anti-ROOTKIT, set of cleanup
routines, and it should clean your system out,
if you are infected.

See the attached jpeg picture for detail of one such example (where they
stick a sticker on saying "Copy-Protected"
when what they really mean is "Virus Infected".

Also try setting the "Affinity" for EAC to just the first CPU, not all
4, I have found BladeEnc doesn't work on multi-core
because of this, I use an old AMD dual core!

I hope that one of these fixes will help cure the problem you are
having, Did you try 0.95beta4? Where 0.99beta4 doesn't
work often this older version does.

Cheers

John
